CLARIFYING RUMORS, BIDDING A FOND ADIEU!

Dear friends and colleagues:

It has been a joy and a pleasure to work with you over these many years I have been in Virginia. We moved here originally from California to help take care of my mother who is now 96 and doing fairly well.

As you may have heard, I have done some reprioritizing.  In my home land of Ecuador, they call my phase of life "La Tercer Edad," (The Third Age).  My third age promises to be exciting and relaxing at the same time and I am looking forward to moving forward with grace.  There are lots of unknowns right now but I thought I would pass along what I know so far, especially since I know there are rumors and speculation...

INTRODUCING OUR NON-PROFIT BRANCH!

RESEARCH FOR TRAUMA AND FAMILY RESILIENCE

It was really exciting to get the confirmation that our request for a non-profit had been reviewed and approved.  Our new non-profit is called Research for Trauma & Family Resilience.

We are very hopeful about being able to obtain Federal, State, and County funding for research and demonstration grants that will allow us to show how our therapy programs have the potential to have positive treatment outcomes.

We have been collecting information through pre- and post-testing for years now, but this will allow us to do randomized trials, compare some of our treatment methodologies, and create a database that will yield important directions for our future.

Please keep us in mind if you hear of new grant opportunities of RFPs that might enable us to do important research.  Our therapists are committed to providing our clients with the best approaches possible so that traumatic impact can be mediated.

UPDATE: EQUINE-ASSISTED THERAPY COLLABORATION

Growth, Regulation, Empathy, & Authenticity Team

GREAT (Growth, Regulation, Empathy, & Authenticity Team) is affiliated with the HEARTS program (Hope through Equine Assisted Recovery and Therapy Services), an ongoing collaboration between Gil Institute and Bridle Paths. Sessions are staffed with both a mental health and an EAGALA certified equine professional.

GREAT is designed to allow children to learn valuable lessons from horses in a controlled environment.  Specifically, children will learn about responsibility, boundaries, regulation, social give and take, and the nature and potential of relationships. These concepts are learned through action, experience, and feedback following interactive activities with the horses as full participants. For more information about Bridle Paths, please visit www.bridlepathsva.org

Play Therapy:
A Comprehensive Guide to
Theory and Practice

by David A. Crenshaw and Anne L. Stewart

Several Gil Institute therapists contributed to this text, to be released in September 2014! Congratulations to Eliana Gil, Elizabeth Konrath, Jennifer Shaw, Myriam Goldin, and Heather Bryan as each contributed to this much anticipated compilation of play therapy theory and practice.

Guilford Press: This authoritative work brings together leading play therapists to describe state-of-the-art clinical approaches and applications. The book explains major theoretical frameworks and summarizes the contemporary play therapy research base, including compelling findings from neuroscience.

Contributors present effective strategies for treating children struggling with such problems as trauma, maltreatment, attachment difficulties, bullying, rage, grief, and autism spectrum disorder. Practice principles are brought to life in vivid case illustrations throughout the volume. Special topics include treatment of military families and play therapy interventions for adolescents and adults.

SANDPLAY TRAINING VIDEO RELEASED!

Dear Colleagues:

Quality training tapes are few and far between.  I have always had a commitment to quality education for those of us in the trenches.  I highly recommend Dr. Roz Heiko's new videotape, Sandplay Training DVD for Therapy Professionals.

First and foremost, Roz has the experience and background that makes her comments credible.  She has a wonderful simplicity of word and manages to convey very important concepts in clear and concise ways.  Secondly, she has a deep commitment to training and has been teaching others for years. Suffice to say this is a wonderful video, and there is a promise of more to come!!  Love it!!  - Eliana
