Festive Starfish Lights Brighten up Downtown
Encinitas for the Holidays
For the first time in many years, visitors to Downtown Encinitas will enjoy festive holiday lighting. The lights are in the form of coastal-themed starfish that adorn the light poles for several blocks of S. Crews Continue Pile Installation on New Rail Bridge
Work has progressed to replace the northernmost, wooden trestle rail bridge over the Los Peñasquitos Lagoon. Crews have placed 22 of the 33 Cast-in-Steel-Shell (CISS) piles, or support columns. The installation of a CISS pile includes pre-drilling a hole, dropping the CISS pile in, and then filling the pile with concrete. Over the next few weeks, daytime work will continue on the outside CISS piles, and the remaining center piles will be installed during planned weekend rail closures in January 2016. Also during December, falsework, which is a temporary wood/steel support structure, will be erected in preparation for installing bent caps - the horizontal components that rest on top of the piles
New Station will Reduce Pollution at Harbor
Boaters at the Oceanside harbor can now use a state-of-the-art pump-out station to get rid of oily water that collects in the bottom their boats. The station outside the harbor's Coast Guard headquarters was unveiled Dec. 11 after harbor officials worked with the state and a Los Angeles-based nonprofit called The Bay Foundation to build the facility at no cost to Oceanside. The new equipment will help reduce pollution in the water, officials said. Oil and fuel can sometimes leak from engines and end up in the bilge - the lowest point of the boat's inner hull - where it mixes with seawater.
