President's Message:

Happy Winter! It is officially winter weather now here in the Chicago area. Cold, rain, sleet, snow, mixed with some days of 45 degrees. Isn't that the unpredictability of Chicago weather?

Winter also means many fun times, like Special Olympics Winter Games, the Special Olympics Polar Plunge, brrrrrrrr, and the start of running races when winter starts to break. And to some of us, winter means thoughts of summer, as we tolerate the cold, and wait for the sun to come back and warm up our worlds. In this issue you'll read about how to start thinking about summer camps.

Finally, you'll read about a Shamrock Run on March 19th that will benefit Protected Tomorrows Charities. We hope if you are a runner, you can run with us. And if you are not a runner, come out and just join in the fun. Hope to see you there!!
Warm Regards,

Mary Anne Ehlert,
President & Founder

Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games
& Polar Plunge

Winter Games for Special Olympics were held last week in nine states around the co untry. Although weather here in Illinois prompted some scheduling changes, the games went o n. T he Illinois Games were held at Chestnut Mountain in Galena, IL with approximately 400 athletes participating. They competed in Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. It's always a success when families, athletes and the many volunteers come together and experience the true meaning of what Special Olympics really is!

The next event for Special Olympics is the "Polar Plunge"!  There are thousands of jumpers at 21 locations across Illinois already registered. The plunge takes place on several days at the end of February through March. Check here for the location nearest to you and register to take plunge, volunteer, donate or just come out and watch!

Summer Camps -Already?

Yes, it's that time!  Summer camps registrations are open.

Camp should be a fun, relaxing and healthy experience that fosters self-esteem and independence. Knowing when your child is ready to attend camp is different for everyone. Discover Camp provides a guide to help parents what's right for their family member
View Discover Camps Guide here.

Knowing what questions to ask the camp is equally important to your peace of mind.

    1. Who will take care of my child's medical needs during the camp week?
    2. What kinds of activities will my child participate in?
    3. How do I know my child will be safe?
    4. What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
    5. How are volunteer counselors selected for camp?
    6. What if a camper wants to come home midweek?
    7. May my child and I visit the camp first to see if we like it?
    8. How can I encourage my reluctant child to attend camp?
    9. Is transportation provided?
    10. What if my child has allergies?

What type of camp is right for my child?
      • Overnight or day camp?
      • Specialty camp for skill building?
      • Camp for fun and relaxation?
We've created a list of camps to help you see what best fits your child. View the list here.
