Terumah

In this week's parashah, Hashem instructs Moshe to begin a collection of the raw materials that would be used in the construction of the Mishkan (tabernacle)-the portable sacred space for Divine worship in the wilderness. Bnei Yisrael eagerly participates in this building campaign, gathering and donating precious metals and gems, spices and woods, oil and animal skins.  Hashem refers to this endeavor not as a fundraiser, though, but as an offering, a terumah; the word terumah relates etymologically to the Hebrew word for "raise up." G-d imbues the Jewish nation with the special ability, and mission, to take ordinary physical objects and spiritually elevate them. The goods gathered for the Mishkan serve as one example of the elevation of the mundane to the sacred. The Mishkan mirrored a similar concept with the display of the lechem hapanim, show bread, which adorned a table upon entry into the Mishkan. The lechem hapanim remains in its exalted spot in the Tabernacle continuously. Metaphorically, this offering reminds us that we encounter G-d in all our endeavors; we join G-d regularly and continuously through our worship and daily work. And what should that work be, as represented by the terumah and the show bread? To partner with G-d to continue to improve the world and raise up the purpose and function of the raw materials and resources Hashem provides us-whether gold and silver or flour and water-to a holy and exalted state.
Shabbat Shalom!

DIGGING INTO SCIENCE?

Middle school students dig physics!   Our new MS Physics Garden is starting to bloom! MS classes banded together to excavate & prepare the 16 foot area for our new Comet installation. Free ride to anyone who can explain angular velocity, momentum, and rotation, all now part of our students' science vocabulary.

NEWTON'S FIRST LAW IN MOTION
8th grade exploring angular momentum in the Physics Garden.  We can't wait to watch this garden grow!!!
HELPING HANDS AND CHICKEN FEET

As part of 7th grade's study of body systems, they dissected a chicken foot to examine ligaments, muscles, tendons, and other structures. This intricate system is quite like the human foot, and much to the amazement (and a little horror) students were able to test the function of each of these remarkable components. Tom's grandfather, Mr. Badner, grabbed his tools and joined in.

IAGT (FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE GIRLS)

This month, the Govrin's opened their home to the 7th and 8th grade It's a Girl Thing, the Rosh Chodesh learning group.  The focus was on self defense and how it related to the theme being learned for Adar with Migilat Ester, about taking a risk to defend oneself, others, and one's nation.

MATH MATTERS

Tyler Winton, 8th Grade, solved a system of 4 inequalities and then graphed it!" Way to show your work!!!

"CHOOZE" TO DO GOOD BUSINESS

Special thanks to Marc and Sharon Blumberg, Akiba parents, for kicking off othe 3rd grade Basic Economics/Goods and Services unit! They spoke to the classes about how an idea can become a business. The kids learned so much and had no idea the journey from conception of idea to product development to production and finally sales.  This was a very informative and exciting talk!

BNOT SHERUT

Tal and Neriya taught their Nitzanim group a game/song about headbands.  Each student made a headband and learned the game.

As the students in the Lower School continue learning about cities and places in Israel, the Bnot Sherut are currently teaching about the mountain of Hermon (הר החרמון) and about Ramat HaGolan (רמת הגולן).  In Ramat HaGolan, there is a volcano that is no longer active.  Tal and Neriya created a volcano to go along with their lesson.

Tal and Neriya also showed all of the teachers how much they are appreciated with a scratch off card that carried a message of appreciation.

CUT IT OUT!
Morah Bonnie and Morah Jenny's K'Ton Ton class work on their scissor skills. They are so engaged as they are working towards mastering this skill.

RIP IT UP!
Our Teenoki Alef class worked on strengthening their fine motor skills by ripping paper. Their Morahs filled their ball pit with all kinds of paper scraps and the yeladim got to rip away. What the children don't realize is that while they are having so much fun with this experience, they are developing their tripod grasp that is needed to use a pencil properly.

WRITE IT OUT!
In order to further enhance the children's learning about writing and how it is used in their everyday lives, Morah Marissa and Morah Nitzan's class created an "office" in their communication center. The teachers encouraged parents to send in examples of how they use writing in their everyday lives (i.e. grocery lists, to do lists, post-it notes, etc.). Now their office is open for business. When heading into the office, a student, Shaya asked, "Morah Marissa, will you tell me to have a great day at work?"

RIDE IT UP.....TO READ!
Morah Naomi and Morah Shoshi's Nitzanim class took an elevator trip up to the Akiba library to choose books. They were excited with all the choices and couldn't get enough to read!

MAKING PATTERNS
Ever wonder what Math looks like in preschool? Morah Dorit and Morah Sarah's Nitzanim class have been working on the math skill of patterning. They are using a variety of tools and discovering that there are countless ways to make a pattern.

SCIENCE IS MELTING!

Eight grade science class made ice cream to understand reactions and freezing point!

MS WRITERS' BLOCK

Rabid Reader Recommend (aka: student book reviews):
Boys in the Boat is about a group of teenagers who had suffered misfortunes in the past. They deal with their problems on the lake, rowing together and establishing friendships. I liked it because it was a story about competition and the power of working together as one, which let them accomplish their goals.

Salt to the Sea is set during World War II, when Russia and Germany fought against each other. It is the story of Florian, a deserter to his people, thief, and the keeper of many secrets. I liked it because it is the story of how people from different worlds come together to fight against evil, and it's an adventurous journey story.
