Mock Trial and Law & Order Class
On Monday, local attorney Mike Kennitz volunteered his time to serve as the presiding judge as the Mock Trial team advised by Ms. Katie Herrmann performed an abridged version of their case for Mr. Meinberg's Law & Order class.  The purpose of the activity was to allow the Law & Order students an opportunity to see how a real trial works while serving as jurors and engaging in the deliberation process.  For the Mock Trial team, this was one more opportunity to practice and polish their skills before their regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 13th at the Waukesha County Courthouse.  All are welcome to attend.

Junior ACT Information - VERY IMPORTANT
Please do not skip over this important information regarding required ACT testing.

The dates for the ACT and ACT WorkKeys tests are quickly approaching, occurring on Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2, respectively. All juniors are required by state law to take these tests, and the tests can only be taken on these dates, or their makeup dates of March 17 and March 18, respectively. It is critically important that every effort be made for your junior child to be in attendance and on time to school on these test dates. Any student absent on both the test date and its makeup date will not be allowed to makeup the test at any other time.

Here is some additional, important information you need to know that applies to both the ACT and ACT WorkKeys tests. These rules are mandated by ACT, not HUHS.
  • All juniors will be assigned to a room for testing. That location will be communicated to them prior to the test date.
  • Juniors should plan to arrive to their testing room by 7:20 and no later than 7:25, like any other school day. Students who arrive after testing has begun cannot take the test that day.
  • Students must have #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils) and a picture ID, such as their student ID or driver's license; an ACT-approved calculator is also strongly recommended.
  • There is no eating or drinking allowed in the testing room. Students may bring food and drink, but only to be consumed during a 15-minute break to occur sometime between 9:30 and 10:00. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons, but must be communicated to Chad Ellefson, Test Coordinator, prior to March 1 and preferably as soon as possible.
  • Cell phones and electronic devices, other than calculators, are not allowed in the test room, nor can they be used during breaks. Any student known to have a cell phone in the test room, or who uses any electronic device, other than a calculator, during testing or breaks, will be dismissed from testing. This includes phones buzzing or beeping during testing and breaks.
  • Students may not read, talk, or do other work while testing is in progress.
Your assistance in discussing these expectations with your child is greatly appreciated.

On February 17 & 18, all juniors will complete required ACT test pre-work during an afternoon homeroom. In addition to providing demographical information and completing an Interest Inventory, students will be asked to which colleges or universities (up to four) they want their ACT test scores sent. This is a service that is provided free only if requested as part of this pre-work. Requests for submissions to more than four schools, or made after the test date, can be made by contacting ACT, but cost a minimum of $12.00. This and other related information can be found in the   Taking the ACT Test booklet.

You are also encouraged to read the guide Preparing for the ACT Test. It contains testing information and a retired ACT test.

Please contact Chad Ellefson with any questions or concerns you have. Additional information can also be found at www.actstudent.org and on the HUHS website.

College Goal Wisconsin:  Provides Free Aid Information & Assistance

Students need help navigating the financial aid application process.  If a student is unfamiliar with the process or doesn't ask for assistance when they need it, they may miss out on receiving aid.  Financial aid offices on college campuses throughout the state offer great expertise and are willing to help.  In addition, there is College Goal Wisconsin (CGW) held on Saturday, February 13, 20, and 27 at 10am and on Wednesday evenings on February 10, 17, and 24.  The evenings start at 6pm.

CGW will have 33 locations set up statewide to help with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for students seeking financial aid.    This is the form that all colleges/universities require to be considered for federal and state financial aid, which includes grants, loans, work study, and scholarships.   Students and parents will receive free assistance in filling out the FAFSA on the day they choose to attend.

Students should attend with a parent or guardian, if possible.   If students and parents have the necessary paper with them, they can actually complete the FAFSA that day and submit it.  A list of materials to bring can be found on the CGW website.   If parents are unable to attend, students may still attend alone.

Each of the 33 locations will draw for a scholarship winner.   Up to $30,000 in scholarships will be given away.    A list of locations and other valuable information can be found at http://collegegoalwi.org/
