PFLAG Germantown, a community group of Metro DC PFLAG, and Seneca Valley High School invite you to participate in an open community forum Saturday, February 20, 2016 , at Seneca Valley High School, 19401 Crystal Rock Dr. Germantown, MD 20874, from 2-5PM to explore issues that affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and queer & questioning (LGBTQ) community. The event is a community gathering in response to the murder of Zella Ziona, a transgender woman of color from Germantown on the night of October 16, 2015.

We will discuss inclusion, equity, acceptance, and tolerance for LGBTQ residents of Germantown and the surrounding areas. There will be a panel of local leaders to address various viewpoints on these issues, followed by small group discussions where community members can engage in reflection and planning of ways that we can make Germantown a safe and welcoming community for all.

Panel includes Michelle McLeod , Honorary Nieces and Nephews ; Karen Holmes , Metro DC PFLAG ; Rev.Miller Hoffman , Open Door MCC ; Gerri Carpenter , parent of a transgender son and lesbian daughter. The series of small group discussions include topics on:
  • Institutionalized Homophobia- Michelle McLeod , Honorary Nieces and Nephews
  • Parents and Teens: How to Talk About Sexuality- Gerri Carpenter and Jean Bertelmann , PFLAG Germantown
  • Trans-Awareness- Karen Holmes , Metro DC PFLAG and John Bartkowiak , PFLAG Germantown
  • Faith & The LGBTQ Community- Rev. Anne Holmes , Seneca Valley UCC and  Rev. Miller Hoffman , Open Door MCC
  • Mental and Physical Health Concerns-Bianca Palmisano, Metro DC PFLAG
  • Policing- Sgt. Jessica Hawkins , D.C. Metropolitan Police LGBT Liaison Unit  and Officer Rose Borisow , Montgomery County Police Department
This event is open to the public. Snacks will be provided thanks to local businesses: Wegmans and &Pizza.
