I had the pleasure of attending some very special events this month. The one that impacted me the most was the celebration held by Meadowvale Hawks hockey team to recognize the great compassion and sportsmanship shown by a 10 year old Meadowvale player, David Boddy. I have included details on this in the newsletter. It is such a feeling of pride to know we have young people in our community who go that extra step to help others.
February 15th is Family Day and there are lots of free activities around Mississauga.

Walk with me for our youth on the Coldest Night of the Year on February 20th!
On the evening of February 20, I will be joining hundreds of residents to walk on the Coldest Night of the Year to raise funds for the Dam Youth Drop In. This is a family-friendly, fun winter fundraising event for Mississauga's homeless, hungry and hurting.
The walk begins and ends at Cornerstone Church, 3020 Vanderbilt Rd, where walkers will register, turn in the results of their fundraising efforts, and return at the end of the evening for a warm celebration meal.

Need Input on Naming the new Park at Tenth Line/Aquitaine
We are moving ahead with building our new park at Tenth Line and Aquitaine and we need to give it a formal name.
I have been using the name "UNION PARK" in recognition of the Union Gas facility which existed on this site since the 1950's. This would preserve the heritage of the property.
I would like to get feedback on this name before I submit it to Council. Please let me know if you agree that we should name it Union Park and if you disagree please offer other suggestions.

The plans for the park are available for the community to view at the Meadowvale Library. You can also view them online by visiting my website at ward9.ca.
We will be incorporating almost all the ideas from our community meetings into the park design.
It will have something for all ages. A skate park designed by the youth in the community, multi purpose pad for basketball and skating, a water feature for cooling, pavillion, games tables, benches, paths, grass area, improved toboggan hill, hockey rink, landscaping, playground and adult fitness equipment. If the budget allows we will fence a small dog run area.
The hockey rink and the dog area will be on the one acre that is reserved for a future fire station and paramedic station. The paramedic/fire stations are 10-15 years away so it will be used in the interim.
In advance of the park construction, we are installing the community natural ice rink although this has been delayed due to a problem with the water valve. I have a few residents who have volunteered to maintain the rink but if you can help, please contact me at [email protected].

Honouring Meadowvale Hawks Hockey Player - David Boddy
On February 5th I joined the celebrations honouring a wonderful young boy, David Boddy whose act of kindness made a big difference to his new friend Hunter Barnhardt.
This young Meadowvale boy plays with the Meadowvale Hawks hockey team and is a great example of what good sportsmanship is all about. I was honoured to present David with a certificate and meet the coaches, parents and team mates ...I am so proud of this young boy!!

Peel Launches Curbside Battery Collection in March
I am pleased that we will be launching our curbside battery collection of single-use household batteries in March.
The collections will be:
March 14-25, and
November 7-18.
You will receive battery collection bags in the mail in late February so make sure you use them to collect used batteries to place at the curb from March 14-25.
Place your single-use household batteries
in the bag on TOP of your closed green organics cart.
Please place out on your RECYCLING week only.
Batteries can also be dropped off at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at The Battleford Recycling Centre (CRC) or at Erin Meadows Community Centre in the bin pictured above.

Peel Police Warn about Growing Number of Tax, Utilities and Other Scams
Peel Regional Police is warning citizens and businesses about new and often sophisticated scams that prey on vulnerable taxpayers, utility users, and consumers.
I have been contacted by a few residents who reported being approached by phone and at the door by individuals
who claim to represent utilities and government agencies such as the Canada Revenue Agency. These companies do not use these methods of contact and the calls are likely a scam.
Do not give any information over the phone or at the door!!

Erin Mills/Britannia Update
I know that motorists are getting frustrated at the reduced lanes and delays at the intersection of Erin Mills and Britannia. Region staff advise me that the work is now moving to south of the intersection in the median. The work is part of the sewer installation along Erin Mills. The plan was to tunnel the entire length but conditions required some above ground work at this location.
All lanes will be opened as the work moves south. T
he contractor is completing work on the last dewatering well early next week. We will then open the northbound through lane on Erin Mills Parkway and the east bound dual left turn lane on Britannia Road. This will be completed by the end of next week, Friday February 19th. One of the southbound dual left turn lanes will remain closed to provide access and the equipment required to operate the dewatering wells in the centre median.
Residents in the area should have received a letter from the contractor advising that they will be undertaking building condition surveys of the properties located in the vicinity of the construction compound.

Meadowvale Community Centre Update
Work continues to move along on the Meadowvale Community Centre and we have set dates for the opening this fall. I am in meetings with staff to discuss programming to ensure we meet the needs of the community.
I will also be asking for suggestions for naming of the rooms in the centre. Watch for more information.
The building will be turned over to the city this summer at which time staff will move in in time for the September 6 opening date.
Programs
will start the third week in September.
I will be holding my annual
Seniors' Fair in the new building a bit later than usual this year on
September 13th
. I am also planning a Community Information Day the following weekend. The
official opening party is planned for October 22
.
Mark these dates and more info will come later.
I am working with our MP to ensure that we receive the Canada 150 funding that was promised for rebuilding the splash pad. There will be a delay in reopening it but the end result will be a new enhanced splash pad.

Meadowvale Residents' Association
I will be attending the monthly board meeting of our new residents' association this month to discuss various issues. The Meadowvale Residents Community Association was founded at a meeting on October 7 and an executive has been elected. I look forward to working with them on all local and city issues.

Civic Awards of Recognition Nominations Now Open
The City of Mississauga is now accepting nominations for the 2016 Civic Awards of Recognition Program.
The awards are open to Mississauga groups and individuals who have volunteered in the community for more than 10 years.
We have been presenting these awards to honour residents annually since 1992.
The awards will be presented at a formal ceremony at the Mississauga Civic Centre on May 31, 2016. Due to limited seating capacity, only the first 100 nominations received will be considered for this year's event.

New Waste Carts Update 
I hope you are finding the new collection services to be easier to follow after 6 weeks of use. I continue to receive some concerns from residents which have all been handled and referred to region staff.
I have listed below online links where you can make reports, register complaints and find information. You can also call the region at 905-791-9499.
Ward 9 has collection every Tuesday but a small section is on a different collection cycle than the rest of the ward. Please be sure to check which calendar week you are on at www.peelregion.ca/waste/.
If your carts are not collected, you can also report this online at the Region of Peel's "Missed Waste Collection site" by clicking here.
Please note that the information provided in the owner's manual that was delivered with the carts is a sample calendar.
It does not represent the actual collection schedule. Residents must visit the Region of Peel's "When does it go" link and type in your address to download your waste collection calendar. To download your collection calendar, click here.
To report broken or damaged carts, click here.
For some residents in townhouse complexes that have limited space, you will have received information on continuing to use bags for garbage and recycling along with your new organics (green) cart for your food waste. Bags must be clear or tinted blue bags only. You should have received a supply of bags from the region. If you did not please contact my office and we will ensure that this is followed up. Please note that when you place your organic bin curbside, bins must be locked.

Watermain Replacement for next two years
The Region is replacing watermains on certain streets in Ward 9 within the next two years.
If your street is on the list, you may wish to delay any major landscaping or driveway works you may have planned until after the work has been completed.

Britannia Road Construction in 2017
A reminder that the final section of Britannia Road, from Winston Churchill Blvd. to Erin Mills Parkway will be rehabilitated in 2017. This work will include
construction of a concrete sidewalk on the south side of Britannia Road from Paddle Road to Glen Erin Drive. The existing sidewalk on the north side of Britannia Road from WCB to EMP will be replaced with a 2.5 - 3.0 meter (8 - 10 foot) asphalt multi use trail.
I have asked staff to maintain the road side ditches/shallow swale along Britannia Road if possible to incorporate more environmentally friendly drainage systems.

Winter Weather in the City
Although we have not had much snow, our priority for
winter maintenance
is to ensure that emergency and public transit vehicles have safe access to routes on major roads.
The City uses a priority route system to clear and salt roads, bus stops, priority sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. We encourage residents to keep up-to-date on the City's plowing and salting to plan ahead for travel with our Mississauga Roads App and Twitter channel @MississaugaSnow.
Roads are salted if snowfall is less than 8 cm (3 in.) or plowed and salted if snowfall is more than 8cm (3 in.).
Priority roads are cleared first for emergency and transit vehicles to travel followed by local residential roads, bus stops, pedestrian crossings and priority sidewalks (around hospitals, schools and major transit routes for transit service).
Priority sidewalks, bus stops and pedestrian crossings are cleared within 24-36 hours after the end of a snowstorm.
When snowfalls are intense or of long duration it can impact the length of time it takes for our crews to get to bus stops and side roads. The priority route system we use and the winter maintenance standards help our crews manage heavy snowfalls throughout the winter.

Snow Season Parking
A reminder that roads with parked cars take longer to plow or salt. Please help plows and salters by removing vehicles from roads during heavy snowfalls.
A winter on-street parking restriction is in effect in Mississauga from November 1 to March 31 between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. This restriction will be enforced in accordance with the City's
Traffic By-law.
Vehicles left on City streets will be issued a penalty notice and are subject to towing and storage fees at the expense of the owner.

Eden Food for Change - Fresh Produce Box
Over 800 residents pick up a fantastic box of fresh vegetables and fruit each week and help support our local food bank. Each week Eden Food for Change scours the Ontario Food Terminal to purchase fresh produce from local farmers and food distributors.
Eden volunteers then create each box with a variety of fruit and vegetables and sell them to the community at cost. There are two sizes of boxes that can be ordered.

2700 Aquitaine Ave
The Ontario Municipal Board hearing for the application for three apartment buildings at 2700 Aquitaine has concluded.
We are still waiting for the decision of the Ontario Municipal Board. Council refused the application and the applicant appealed to the OMB. The hearing was in November but it can take 3-6 months for us to have a decision. I will be advising residents as soon as I hear anything.

Two Ward 9 Schools Receive Award
I was pleased and proud to present the Wildewood Award for School Zone Safety to
Plum Tree Park Public School (photo on the left) and Shelter Bay Public School (photo on the right) on January 20th at Council.

a safer and better community for everyone.

Erin Mills Connects
I attended the first meeting of Erin Mills Connects on January 21st at John Fraser Secondary School.
This new community group will bring together educators, organizations and government to help the youth in the community.
We will meet again in early March to start planning the future of this new initiative. I am looking forward to playing a large role in supporting the group.

Zebra Robotics
I had the pleasure of touring Zebra Robotics located on Millcreek on January 22nd and met a great group of kids who taught me about robotics.
These teams were preparing to compete in a competition in Waterloo the following weekend.

International Interfaith Harmony Week 
I attended a wonderful inspiring breakfast on February 1st at the Fo Guang Shan temple in Meadowvale to celebrate International Interfaith Harmony Week.
I was proud to represent the city and join with representatives of many faiths to promote harmony in our communities. I was very pleased to see representatives from the Ar Rahman Centre of Meadowvale in attendance also.

Festival of Friends
I had the pleasure of attending the Mississauga Festival Choir's amazing Festival of Friends concert on February 6th at Eden United Church.
The finale had over 300 voices from seven choirs performing. Funds raised go to Alzheimers Society of Peel.

Ringing in Chinese New Year at Fo Guang Shan Temple
I was pleased to ring in the Chinese New Year once again as I have done for the past seventeen years at the Fo Guang Shan Temple at midnight on Sunday February 7th. This year is the Year of the Monkey.

Adopt a Seniors' Home Team Challenge
Adopt a Seniors' Home - Meadowvale Minor Hockey's ME51 Atom Red issues a challenge to hockey teams across Canada to spread some hockey cheer this winter.
Many seniors would love to come to hockey games, but need to be invited and given a schedule. Larger, reputable seniors' homes have a bus, trained staff and an Activity Coordinator to transport and accompany seniors who are mobile and interested in outings.
