Showcasing Environmental Technologies of the Here and Now
The Iowa Nutrient Research & Education Council (INREC) hosted the Environmental Technology Forums at the 2016 Showcase & Conference held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, Wednesday, February 10. Sixteen exhibiting companies participated in the forums. "These forums were a great way to showcase a cross section of the environmental technologies that is available to attendees during the Agribusiness Showcase & Conference," stated Shawn Richmond, AAI Environmental Technology Director and INREC programs contact.

These forums highlight environmental efforts of exhibitors, providing a unique chance to advance understanding of the role that new technologies and science are playing to enhance environmental stewardship within agriculture. INREC hoped to highlight the broad cross-section of agricultural and food production technologies that assist with reducing nutrient losses from agricultural lands.

"We continue to see exciting new technologies that help farmers prevent erosion, limit nutrient loss and protect water quality.  The newly introduced Environmental Technology Forum at the 2016 AAI Showcase & Conference provided another outlet for folks to see and understand the role technology and science play in enhancing environmental stewardship.  Each year the AAI Showcase and Conference brings together a wide variety of exhibitors to display equipment, products and services that allow farmers to continue to reduce their environmental impact.  We need new technologies and innovative solutions, like those highlighted at the Showcase, to achieve the goals for water quality that we all share," states Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey.

INREC raffled 4 iPads and a DMACC Drone Course during on Wednesday, February 10. The showcase planning committee wants to thank INREC for their contribution to our 2016 showcase programming.
A Winning Combination for the Conservation College
Over forty showcase attendees joined INREC during the Conservation College on Wednesday, February 10 during the annual Agribusiness Showcase & Conference.

This session reviewed how CCAs can identify the need for various practices using online software solutions available in the ag sector, and how they can then link their customers to information and services for design options development and construction of practices. Dean Lemke, AAI Nutrient Management & Environmental Stewardship Director, and Shawn Richmond, AAI Environmental Technology Director spoke to the group and identified opportunities in the ag sector for ag retailers and CCAs roles working with farmers, and how those opportunities can be leveraged to expedite delivery of conservation solutions to their customers.

The session also covered the Iowa Agribusiness Environmental Partnership (IAEP). The mission of IAEP is to build sustainable environmental stewardship by leveraging science and technologies upon existing and future plans, programs, processes and procedures. Lemke and Richmond discussed the partnership and the potential benefits of AAI members that would join.

What's In Store For Nitrogen In 2016
by: CropLife

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey will be there speaking at the event, he says one of the conversations that he's looking forward to is water quality technology but there will be more he'll be speaking on at the showcase.North American nitrogen during 2015 was defined by declining nitrogen prices globally while corn and the futures market traded sideways, incentivizing farmers not to sell grain. North America entered the year with excess ammonia inventory due to a carryover from the poor fall 2014 application season and customer reluctance to take on inventory due to perceived price risk.

Spring 2015 proved to be exceptionally strong for ammonia application in North America. The weather patterns that evolved in March and lasted through May were highly conducive to ammonia application throughout the Midwest and Canada. The extended season allowed us to have a record spring at some of our distribution terminals, though overall ammonia shipments were lower than the record we had shipped during the first six months of 2014.
