Our guest preacher this Sunday

The Rev'd Dr. Alvin C. Johnson, Jr., will be our guest preacher for the First  Sunday of Lent.  His is a voice you won't want to miss. Fr. Johnson and I came to know each in while stuck in
a two hour traffic jam in the parking deck of O'Hare Airport in 1991.  I worked with him (and for him), and learned from him over the following six and a half years at St. Michael's, Barrington, Illinois. At one point he was a founder, a professor, and a student in the pioneering Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development course of study at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.  Having retired from parish ministry, he now serves the Diocese of Northwest as Canon for Congregational Vitality and Innovation.

Al is a thoughtful and incisive preacher who brings a deep and abiding faith, a facile theological mind, and an authentic humanity to the craft of preaching.  Please join us on Lent 1 at 8:15 or 11:00 and welcome him to the Cathedral.

Lenten blessings,
Scott+

Dean Hunter's new Sunday morning class
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

By some accounts, C.S. Lewis is more popular today than ever.  Though his work spanned decades, some of the most important work happened concurrently with World War II - the United Kingdom was besieged, with London in the midst of the blitz.  It was chaotic. It was confusing. It was full of fear.  Though we are not in the midst of the a blitz, such as was unfolding then, our times are, without a doubt, filled with chaos, confusion, and fear.  Enter Lewis' 1942 work, The Screwtape Letters, a collection of thirty-one letters from Screwtape (a senior demon) to Wormwood (an inexperienced tempter, and Screwtape's nephew) who is struggling to get his patient to engage "the Lord below."  A fascinating examination of individual gain and greed vs. God's love for humankind and the nature of human virtue presents itself in a creative and engaging way.  Join Dean Hunter  on  Sunday mornings from 9:30 - 10:30 in the Crowley Room.

Choral Evensong in the Cathedral will be offered on Sunday, February 14 at 4:00 p.m.  The service will be sung by guest choir, Audivi Vocem of Ann Arbor.

Audivi Vocem is a professional vocal ensemble of 7-9 singers based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 2013, Audivi Vocem presents music of all eras, ranging from 12- century polyphony to world premieres by leading choral composers. Its members have performed with many of the country's leading ensembles, have appeared on America's Got Talent, and are either full-time musicians or pursuing graduate degrees in music. The ensemble rehearses collaboratively, with Noah Horn serving as artistic director. Past performances include multiple events at the Detroit Institute of Arts and programs in Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Grosse Pointe Woods. In June 2015, Audivi Vocem was the featured professional ensemble for the New England Regional American Guild of Organists convention.

For evensong in the Cathedral. Audivi Vocem will sing music of the late-Tudor composer, Thomas Tomkins.  For more about this ensemble, please visit www.audivivocem.com

Cantus sings The Four Loves
Saturday, February 20, 7:00 p.m.

Is there anything more universal than love? Love has been the inspiration for artistic expression since the dawn of time but because of its complexity, the Greeks broke it down into four different kinds: romantic, familial, friendly, and unconditional.  Cantus regards our greatest and most fragile gift in their program of a cappella music, The Four Loves. Including music by Poulenc, Grieg, Beethoven, Bobby McFerrin, and four newly commissioned works, The Four Loves looks at this unquantifiable emotion from all sides.

With recent debuts at Lincoln Center and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cantus is increasingly recognized as one of America's finest vocal ensembles.

Admission is $20 per person.  Tickets are available at the door or by reservation.

E . C . - It could stand for Early Church. It could stand for Every Christian. It could stand for Episcopal Considerations. It could stand for Everyone Come. In reality E . C .is a bit of all of these. E . C . is a class for everyone who has an interest in learning a bit more about Christianity and the Episcopal Church take on Christianity. The class will be offered on Sundays beginning February 21. We usually end before Easter, but the class this year will run into Eastertide. The exact concluding date will be determined once the class starts meeting. We will meet at 12:45 (after the 11:00 service and time for coffee/non-coffee) in the Crowley Room, and conclude by 2:15. So grab your coffee (or non-coffee) and join us. By the way, if you want to bring a sandwich or something more substantial that's fine. It is a great way to learn new stuff, brush up on stuff that may have gotten rusty, and to prepare for Confirmation or Reception if you are considering that. Bring yourself, bring a friend, bring a snack, and see how easy it is to enjoy E C .
( Feb. 21 is an overview, so come check it out.)

Life is short and we have not too much time
for gladdening the hearts of those
who travel with us.
Oh, be swift to love! Make haste to be kind.
