A Message from Andrea |
Snow is Wonder
After what seemed like a winter that would never come, we have been
graced with snow in Connecticut. It seems that whether you are a native New Englander, an Israeli experiencing winter for the first time, or a transplant from California, the first snowfall is joyous. We wake in the morning to see a beautiful white covered landscape in our yards; the world falls quiet under the white insulation. Add a snow day call from school and the day becomes a gift; we hunker down with our families and friends, cook lovely warm meals, and make hot chocolate for the kids.
Snow is wonder.
Watching someone see snow for the first time, touch snow and taste snow seems almost miraculous. In fact, doing it for the first time in a season gives us an opportunity to experience that "firstness" every year. How can we not be grateful? How lovely that our Jewish tradition offers us a way to mark firsts with the words of the Shehechyanu.
Our praise to You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of all:
for giving us life, sustaining us, and enabling us to reach this season.
How do we understand the extreme natural beauty that graces us in winter, and how can we express our awe? Our tradition, again, helps us take in a moment and appreciate what surrounds us.
We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, that such as these are in Your world.
Snow is wonder.
Take a look at these magnificent images of snowflakes and feel the awe.
Shabbat Shalom

FOSS Celebration Brings Schechter Community Together
|
On Saturday evening, more than 110 people joined together to celebrate the success of this year's Friends of Solomon Schechter (F.O.S.S.) Campaign. The campaign raises money for innovative educational programming at Schechter. This year's event brought together current and alumni parents along with Board members, community supporters, and faculty. Each year, three Schechter families are selected as the FOSS chairs. One family from each of the divisions of the school is honored. This year, the Raub family represented early childhood, the Berson family represented the lower school and the Wolf family represented the middle school. The FOSS committee acknowledges and celebrates the support from current parents. This year, there was a large increase in parent participation. The FOSS campaign raised close to $150,000. Special thanks to Gayle and Steve Temkin for hosting the event..

Schechter Science Club Students Score at Annual Science Night |
Last week, students participating in the Science Fair Club finally saw all of their hard work pay off in the annual joint Science Night with Hebrew Academy. The evening provided the students the opportunity to share their work with the wider Jewish community as well as learn from their peers and see what other middle school students were interested in learning. Students presented their research to scientists in the Schechter community and received feedback about their work.
Throughout the first semester, students in the Schechter Science Fair Club worked on the skills of asking specific testable questions, designing controlled and measurable experiments that could help to answer their questions, taking and recording precise measurements, and interpreting and communicating their results. Seeing the experiments in action was one of the club highlights. Curiosity took center stage during club meetings as students developed strategies to answer their own questions. Seventh grader Atara Harrari reflected, "To me, Science Fair was an opportunity to learn and find out how to figure things out--even by trial and error." Sixth grader Harry Gold said, "I would recommend the club to others because it was fun to do the experiment." Michael Weiss, also in sixth grade, expressed similar thoughts, "It was fun. I learned by doing the experiment."

Schechter Book Fair Review |
The 2016 Solomon Schechter Scholastic Groovy Book Fair brightened the school's lobby again this year. The week-long book fair kicked off with a family-friendly cookies & juice and wine & cheese soirée Sunday evening
which was well attended.
On opening day, Clifford the Big Red Dog came out of hibernation to surprise and excite the children during the EC reading event. Students were mesmerized during Rob Dulitsky's delivery of Frog on a Log and Please, Mr. Panda.
Due to overwhelming demand, new books arrived midweek featuring middle school sports fiction and nonfiction. With outstanding participation sales increased this year by almost twenty-nine percent.
The PA would like to acknowledge the front office staff of Schechter, Audrey Sobel, Karen Shakun and Lara Lakenbach for their promotion of the book fair. A huge thanks to all the volunteers: Elizabeth Ehrlich, Anna Huttner, Mitra Kabakoff, Rene Kariel, Elaine Leshem, Moira Leshem, Julie Noll, Mark Resnick, Melanie Shani, Gayle Temkin, Karen Tuvin, and Danielle Weiss who gave their time to make this year's book fair a big success.

A Win and a Loss for Schechter Scorpion Basketball |
This week, the girls' basketball team earned their fourth win of the season as they played Watkinson School. It was a hard-fought victory led by seventh grader and point guard
Eden Raviv
(18 points). Fourth grader
Pauline Golder
was a major contributor on defense, causing a number of turnovers and making steals, all leading to offensive baskets. The girls' final home game is
Wednesday, February 24th
as a part of a double header with SMSA.
On Wednesday, the boys' basketball team took a hard-fought loss at Watkinson School. The Scorpions were out-hustled early on, going down 11-0 before playing amazing basketball for the remainder of the game. They tied it up in the fourth quarter 32-32 with two minutes left to play.
Coby Noll
caught fire with 12 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarter (14 overall) and
Isaiah Meyer
chipped in with 10 points to power the offense. Unfortunately, in the end, the Scorpions lost 36-32.
Brady Dulitsky
took two charges and played stellar defense along with
Aaron Rotter,
as they created havoc on the defensive end.
