SOUTH BAY AREA SUCCESS STORIES

Forty-one-year-old, Navy Veteran, Guillermo Madrid, was a Senior Account Executive and Outside Technical Sales Representative for a technology service provider. Unfortunately, he was laid off in October of 2014. His confidence shaken from the layoff, Mr. Madrid felt that he needed additional training if he was going to gain a competitive edge and rejoin the workforce.

Job information, training and job placement services including job club, labor market information, career workshops, job and career placement assistance, individualized assessment and much more are available. All of our services are free!

The South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB) recently launched a new business portal,
www.SouthBayBusiness.org, which is the result of a regional collaboration between 11 South Bay Cities (Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance) and the organization to help businesses succeed in a competitive marketplace.

The Hawthorne Teen Center 7th Anniversary celebration, held at the Center, was hosted by the SBWIB and drew more than 100 people, including students, staff, parents and community civic leaders.
Chief Executive Officer of the SBWIB, Jan Vogel, was joined by City of Hawthorne Treasurer, David Patterson and Maritza Molina, Centinela Valley Union High School District Board Member.

The 20th Annual SBWIB Alumni Awards Ceremony attracted more than 400 civic leaders, employers, training providers and graduates of job and career training programs.
The event celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of the workforce investment community during the past year. Retiring El Camino College President, Dr. Thomas Fallo, received the Esther Williams Award of Excellence.

Herein lies the value of Workplace Development Boards (WDBs) in helping employers in trade and transportation circles develop not only next-generation technological aptitudes but also the "old school" skills required to get the job done in any business environment.
