City Issues Traffic Advisory for Filmore Area
NEW ORLEANS - On Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016 at 9 a.m., the City of New Orleans' construction contractor, Barriere Construction, will re-route two-way traffic on St. Bernard Avenue between Filmore Avenue and Robert E. Lee Boulevard in the Filmore neighborhood. The traffic shift is necessary for construction crews to complete excavation work on St. Bernard Avenue. Public safety is the top priority, and residents should use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near the site.

The north and south bound travel lanes on St. Bernard Avenue between Filmore Avenue and Robert E. Lee Boulevard will shift to the east side of the existing neutral ground in order for the City to fully reconstruct this portion. One travel lane, in each direction, will be maintained throughout the duration of construction.

The St. Bernard Avenue reconstruction project includes removing and replacing existing sewer, water and drainage lines, replacing sidewalks and driveway aprons, installing American with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections and repaving the roadway in concrete and landscaping. The project is approximately 50 percent complete and on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2016.

Construction crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, work on Saturdays may occur, when necessary.

To sign up for regular project status updates, email the Department of Public Works at dpw@nola.gov.  For more information on all projects under construction, planned or completed please visit http://roadwork.nola.gov/

  The Lenten season
A distinction is to be made between Lent and the Easter Triduum. Strictly speaking, Lent ends with the beginning of the Triduum on Holy Thursday. The Ordo notes: "Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord's Supper exclusive on Holy Thursday."

Fasting and abstinence
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound to fast may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to each one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years or older on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and on all Fridays of Lent. The
determination of certain days as obligatory days of penance should not be understood as limiting the occasions for Christian penance.

Maintaining the spirit of the season of Lent
The Spirit of the season of Lent should be maintained throughout the weeks of Lent. The obligation to observe penitential days of the church is a very important part of our spiritual life. Individual circumstances must be taken into account, but in general, people should seek to do more rather than less, since fast and abstinence on the days prescribed should be considered a minimal response to the Lord's call to penance and conversion of life.

Daylight Savings Time
Pastors are reminded that daylight savings time this year will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 13, which is the Fifth Sunday of Lent.

Easter Vigil
The Roman Missal states: "The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil must take place during the night, so that it begins after nightfall and ends before daybreak on the Sunday." No Mass may precede the Easter Vigil. The United States Naval Observatory states that on Holy Saturday, March 26, the beginning of night is 7:40 p.m. Central Daylight Time. Therefore, in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Easter Vigil Mass may not begin before 8 p.m. Central Daylight Time. Only one Easter Vigil Mass is to be celebrated in each parish.

Weddings, baptisms and funerals
Weddings may not be celebrated on Sundays of Lent, during the Easter Triduum or on Holy Saturday after the Vigil.

The Roman Missal states that baptism is one of the four parts of the Easter Vigil, celebrated "as day approaches, with new members reborn in Baptism." The RCIA is geared and planned for the reception of the sacraments of initiation at the Vigil. The Rite of Baptism of Children states: "To bring out the Paschal character of baptism, it is recommended that the sacrament be celebrated during the Easter Vigil or on Sunday when the Church commemorates the Lord's resurrection." While Baptisms during Lent are discouraged in normative circumstances, it nonetheless remains the prerogative of the pastor after consultation with the parents to decide on celebrating a baptism during Lent.

Funerals may be celebrated on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, but not within the context of Mass. The Eucharist may not be celebrated or distributed at a funeral on these days.

Archdiocesan nights for confession
The first three Wednesdays in March (March 2, 9 and 16) have been designated as the archdiocesan "Nights for Confession." On these dates, the sacrament of penance is to be available in all churches from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Petit Théâtre Du Vieux Carré sets the stage for
an American Panto, Sleeping Beauty
NEW ORLEANS, LA -- In this world premiere adaptation of Sleeping Beauty, comedy meets Carnival in a vivid re-imagining of the classic fairy tale. Directors Jon Greene and Maxwell Williams draw inspiration from the timeless and adored tradition of British Panto to create a brand new tradition for the young and young at heart.
Audiences will be treated to an experience that is both new and oddly familiar. The original script, by Jon Greene, has been crafted specifically for the City of New Orleans and Le Petit Théâtre, and the attitudes and relationships have been updated to suit the era in which we live.
"The tone of this production is very much comedic and includes slapstick, wordplay, topical and local jokes, as well as a healthy dose of call-and-response audience participation. Like any good Panto, this show prides itself on being "fun for the whole family!" says playwright Jon Greene.

By bookending the Mardi Gras season with Sleeping Beauty, Le Petit hopes to add to New Orleans' grandest tradition with a show thriving with similar spirit. The cast of Sleeping Beauty includes: Bob Edes (Widow Chockablock), Mary Pauley (Malifica), Jessica Lozano (Princess Calliope), Rahim Glaspy (Prince Stewart), Alex Smith (ManFred), Andrew Vaught (Frog), and Keith Claverie (Dudley J. Storyteller).
www.LePetitTheatre.com
New Orleans' most historic playhouse, Le Petit Théâtre Du Vieux Carré, has played an important role in our nation's theatrical history since 1916.  Located just off of Jackson Square, we have called our current stage home since 1922

The Rolling Stones are one of the most iconic bands of the past 50 years. Their music has been the soundtrack to many people's lives, whether conscious or unknowingly. From commercials to Super Bowl performances to award-winning films, their music permeates throughout American culture. With their music's roots in blues, it stems from an early form of Jazz that was adapted into a more folk-like sound, later influencing rock and roll. Since The Rolling Stones are synonymous with rock and roll and continue to remain relevant, Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra will explore their iconic music through the lens of Jazz. Through specialized orchestration and new musical conception, arrangers will reanimate these anthems for the orchestra in fresh and exciting ways.

2 eggs
1 tbsp blood orange zest

⅔ cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
FOR THE SAUCE:
2 cups chopped strawberries
¼ cup blood orange juice
1 tsp blood orange zest

5.Serve pancakes topped with warm strawberry sauce.

Among the rites of Carnival is the annual run of ... And The Ball and All, the Ricky Graham-penned comedy
about the Mystic Krewe of Terpsichore. The Ball debuted in 1995 (the year in which it's set) and had a long initial run. The outrageous, affectionate chronicle of y'at social custom must be imbued with immortal energies, because it keeps coming back and audiences still love it.

In the SoFAB Kitchen with Pigeon & Prince
  • Southern Food & Beverage Museum1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard New Orleans, LA, 70113 United States
Join the Southern Food & Beverage Museum for a demonstration with Chef Erick Loos, Executive Chef of Pigeon & Prince (part of the Besh Restaurant Group). Chef Erick will be making a Slow Cooked Two Run Farm Lamb & Herbed Pasta Ragout with artichokes, roast heirloom carrots & turnips. Demonstration begins at 2 PM, samples are first come first serve. Free with museum admission.
In January 2016 the Besh Restaurant Group announced the acquisition of a space in New Orleans to house a new private events venue, dubbed Pigeon & Prince in honor of the space's previous incarnations as a pigeon roost and a bedsit for visiting royals. Executive Chef Erick Loos of La Provence is helming the culinary development for the space. Pigeon & Prince will begin hosting events in late January.
About the Chef
At an early age, Erick Loos started cooking at home and worked in professional kitchens as his first job in Moreno Valley, CA. This was a long way from the family of restaurants owned by renowned Louisiana chef John Besh. Upon completion of high school, he attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. His externship program took him to New Orleans, where he began working at Restaurant August. While flourishing in a city so rich in food culture, Erick was soon promoted to sous chef. In the beginning of 2009, Erick was named chef de cuisine of La Provence where he keeps the tradition of La Provence founder, Chris Kerageorgiou, at heart as he creates brilliant dishes using local ingredients, many of which are grown on La Provence's own farm. For five seasons Erick worked for John Besh's friend and mentor at Relais et Châteaux in the Château de Montcaud in Bagnols-sur-ceze, France, where he forged a refined understanding of French farm to table repertoire. Erick translated this experience into his work on the La Provence farm, leading the resurgence of sustainable farming. For years Erick has also been at the helm of BRG catering projects where he has orchestrated meals for heads of state, lunches with first ladies, weddings and other functions both large and small with professionalism and poise. La Provence has been named New Orleans Menu magazine's 'Restaurant of the Year', one of the nation's 'Most Romantic Restaurants' by Travel + Leisure, 'Northshore's Best French Restaurant' by Sophisticated Woman and 'Best Northshore Restaurant' by Gambit Weekly.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday.
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd.
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

B.B. King's Blues Club Opens on Decatur Street
Featuring Memphis BBQ, classic New Orleans cuisine and local musicians daily in the heart of the French Quarter
New Orleans, LA  - B.B. King left a legacy in the heart of music fans across the globe and the restaurant
and blues club bearing his name will leave you wanting more. Only the second one to open since his death, it is a special
tribute to the late musician. Known for its great live music and Memphis BBQ,
B.B. King's Blues Club (1104 Decatur St.) will
host its Grand Opening in the heart of the French Quarter on February 18, 2016.
Tourists and locals alike will find B.B. King Blues Club to be a destination for good music and great food. The club will
feature their famous Memphis BBQ coupled with classic New Orleans dishes and an Oyster Bar. Enjoy the Memphis fare
including their Famous Dry Ribs, Smoked Prime Rib and Pulled Pork or try a New Orleans favorite such as Gumbo Ya Ya,
Shrimp and Grits or an Oyster Po Boy. Cornbread is a southern staple and B.B. King's is well loved for that reason. Guests
can wash all of that down with a drink from the copper-topped bar or one of B.B. King's classic cocktails or local craft beers.
B.B. King's Blues Club is proud to have New Orleans native, Syrena Johnson as their Executive Chef. Syrena is a local
talent that entered the program at Liberty Kitchen after Katrina displaced her family and found a mentor in Chef John Besh.
From there, Syrena won Besh's foundation's scholarship to the International Culinary Center in New York and after
graduation returned home to share her talents with New Orleans, and B.B. King's is all the better having her skills in the
kitchen.
At B.B. King's live music will be played seven days a week. The B.B. King All-Star Band will entertain guests four nights a
week and local bands will play 3-4 nights a week. The music will begin even earlier at 11 AM on Sunday featuring a
Jazz/Blues brunch for people to enjoy.
"We have been looking for a location in New Orleans for a decade and are excited to bring our world famous BBQ and all
day entertainment to the heart of the French Quarter. We work to honor the music legacy of B.B. King and our All-Star band
will play everything from authentic blues, classic soul, rock & roll, and jazz for our guests. We want you to come enjoy the
food and stay for the music," said Tommy Peters, President of Beale Street Blues Company.
Tony Coleman, B.B. King's drummer for more than 30 years is the music director for the Club and ensures that the music is
a top-notch tribute to the late musician. New Orleans offers the opportunity to showcase music that B.B. King's hasn't had in
other locations, and employing local musicians is the only way to get it right. Coleman said "The opportunity to put music
together for a location in New Orleans is a dream come true. While touring, we were only able to be here for a night or two
so I am looking forward to being involved in the city's music scene for a long time."

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
