How do you define Education for Sustainability (EfS)?  

Let us count the ways ... from Summer Institutes, to fall in-service credit courses, custom professional development workshops and opportunities for students to engage in service learning projects, CELF provides meaningful solutions for K-12 educators and students to incorporate real-world problem solving into their schools. 

CELF was pleased to welcome two dynamic groups of educators to our Summer Institutes on Education for Sustainability in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and Manhattanville College. Participants reflected on the meaning and value of EfS, then got busy creating actionable plans for incorporating the big ideas of sustainability into their curricula.

 

  
Greenpoint: Thank you to NWF Eco-Schools for inviting CELF to conduct teacher training to kick off their Greenpoint Eco-Schools initiative. Sustainability Coordinators, teachers and administrators from 4 schools spent 3 days immersed in the field of Education for 
Sustainability and are heading out with tangible tools they can unpack in their classrooms this fall. Their enthusiasm was palpable as they experienced hands-on activities, presentations and case studies of how to turn their ideals into practical classroom lessons. Read More 

Manhattanville College: Teachers from more that a dozen school districts joined CELF at its annual summer institute at Manhattanville College. In addition to plenty of hands-on learning exercises and practical examples from teachers, participants were treated to a host of guest presenters sharing real-world sustainability challenges and solutions from organizations like Mt. Sinai Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Westchester Land Trust and Praxair.

Project-Based Learning in EfS

    

CELF's EfS curriculum framework seamlessly integrates sustainability concepts within existing curricula. Participants will develop a thorough understanding of Problem Based Learning and the principles and practices of EfS. Participants will gain strategies to cultivate environmental literacy and civic responsibility while encouraging students to think about 21 st  century problems and solutions. 


Target Grade Levels:  K - 8 

Specific Content Areas: STEM and social studies
Dates: Course runs Sept. 19 -- Dec. 12

Service Learning in Action
Part of CELF's mission to make Education for Sustainability part of every K-12 school curricula is the goal to prepare students to be responsible citizens of a global community. School and community groups that donate to the  CELF LifeStraw   
campaign are well on their way: they recognize the inequities in access to clean water and they are taking action to make a difference.
