A COURSE IN MIRACLES
CH 21 "THE INNER PICTURE"
III. "THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SIGHT"

It is impossible the Son of God be merely driven by events outside of him. It is impossible that the happenings that come to him were not his choice. His power of decision is the determiner of every situation in which he seems to find himself by chance or accident. No accident nor chance is possible within the universe as God created it, outside of which is nothing. Suffer, and you decided sin was your goal. Be happy, and you gave the power of decision to Him Who must decide for God for you. This is the little gift you offer to the Holy Spirit, and even this He gave to you to give yourself. For by this gift is given you the power to release your savior that he may give salvation unto you.

WHAT IS SALVATION?
What is Salvation
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER* Example MP3

Salvation is a promise, made by God,
that you would find your way to Him at last.
It cannot but be kept. It guarantees
that time will have an end, and all the thoughts
that have been born in time will end as well.
God's Word is given every mind that thinks
that it has separate thoughts, and will replace
these thoughts of conflict with the Thought of peace.

The Thought of peace was given to God's Son
the instant that his mind had thought of war.
There was no need for such a Thought before,
for peace was given without opposite,
and merely was. But when the mind is split,
there is a need of healing. So the Thought
Which has the power to heal the split became
a part of every fragment of the mind
which still was one, but failed to recognize
its oneness. Now it did not know itself,
and thought its own identity was lost.

Salvation is undoing in the sense
that it does nothing, failing to support
the world of dreams and malice. Thus it lets
illusions go. By not supporting them,
it merely lets them quietly go down
   to dust. And what they hid is now revealed;
an altar to the holy Name of God,
whereon His Word is written, with the gifts
of your forgiveness laid before It, and
the memory of God not far behind.

Let us come daily to this holy place,
and spend a while together. Here we share
our final dream. It is a dream in which
there is no sorrow, for it holds a hint
of all the glory given us by God.
The grass is pushing through the soil, the trees
are budding now, and birds have come to live
within their branches. Earth is being born
again in new perception. Night has gone,
and we have come together in the light.

From here we give salvation to the world,
for it is here salvation was received.
The song of our rejoicing is the call
to all the world that freedom is returned,
that time is almost over, and God's Son
has but an instant more to wait until
his Father is remembered, dreams are done,
eternity has shined away the world,
and only Heaven now exists at all.

God in his mercy wills that I be saved.

Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio

I need but look upon all things that seem
to hurt me, and with perfect certainty
assure myself, "God wills that I be saved
from this," and merely watch them disappear.
I need but keep in mind my Father's Will
for me is only happiness, to find
that only happiness has come to me.
And I need but remember that His Love
surrounds His Son and keeps his sinlessness
forever perfect, to be sure that I
am saved and safe forever in His arms.
I am the Son He loves. And I am saved
because God in His mercy wills it so .

Father, Your holiness is mine. Your Love
created me, and made my sinlessness
forever part of You. I have no guilt
or sin in me, for there is none in You.

LESSON 235
God in His mercy wills that I be saved.

Sarah's Commentary:

"God in His mercy wills that I be saved." The question then arises, "saved from what?" and Jesus tells us it is to be saved from all things that seem to hurt me. (W.235.1.1) What hurts me are my own thoughts, my opinions, my interpretations and my judgments. How willing am I to be saved from my perception that I can be hurt? If His "Will for me is only happiness," (W.235.1.2) the way I am seeing a situation that seems to cause me distress must be my decision, which conflicts with God's Will for me.

We can't mar our own perfection as given us by God in our creation as His Son. The prayer is just another way of talking about this as we affirm again that Love is what created us and made us sinless forever, always perfect and eternally safe. Clearly we don't feel that way much of the time. The reason we don't is because the ego always speaks first. In other words, the ego gives us its interpretation of everything first. It tells us to blame, to judge, to value our thoughts and opinions, which all support differences and specialness.

We think our reality is that of a body and personality relating to 'others' as separate entities from us. As a result, we are in competition with each other trying to achieve our happiness at their expense. What if we are wrong about ourselves? Jesus assures us we are. He says that while we think our separate will is the source of our happiness, it is actually the source of our pain and misery. Because we are confused about who we are, we don't know what we are doing, where we are going, what our best interests are and how to meet our real needs. Give over the picture you hold of yourself for a moment. Open yourself to question your perception of who you are. Jesus tells us, "God's will is all there is." (Clarification of Terms.3.6.1) Therefore, the separate will we think is ours does not even exist. That thought can terrify us. We want our existence, which is why we are here. The call to know ourselves as pure, innocent, and joyful beings of peace and love is also very strong. If God is all there is, we must be one with Him.

In Chapter 31, " The Simplicity of Salvation, " Jesus says "How simple is salvation! All it says is what was never true is not true now, and never will be. The impossible [separation from God] has not occurred, and can have no effects. And that is all. Can this be hard to learn by anyone who wants it to be true?" (T.31.I.1.1-5)(ACIM OE T.31.I.1) On the level of where we think we are, are we willing to consider how wrong we have been about ourselves. "Only unwillingness to learn it could make such an easy lesson difficult." (T.31.I.1.6)(ACIM OE T.31.I.1)

Our unwillingness points us to the authority problem. We think we have made another will, and we give power to that will by our belief. If all that we believe is not true now, we can deny the power of anything to hurt us.

Salvation, as taught in this course, is about healing our perception that we are separate, deficient, victims of the world. None of this is real, but it is not helpful to us just to be told it is all unreal or it is all illusion. Why? Because right now we believe in the reality of what we see, feel and experience. We believe our body is who we are, and we cling to this self we believe we have made. Denying what we believe would not be helpful to us. Yes, it is all unreal. None of it has any meaning, but while we are still believing in the reality of our bodies and the world, it is not helpful to deny what we are holding as true. What is helpful is to look at our beliefs, our concepts, our values, our feelings and our perceptions and be willing to question them. When we see that perhaps we are wrong in how we see them, we will be more willing to ask the Holy Spirit for His interpretation. We will become more willing to step aside from our perspectives and look to the truth within.

In Lesson 70, we are told that guilt and salvation are in our minds and nowhere else. "When you realize that all guilt is solely an invention of your mind, you also realize that guilt and salvation must be in the same place. In understanding this you are saved." (W.70.1.5-6) Yet what we have done is to put the responsibility for the source of our pain outside of our minds. We make people, events and circumstances outside of ourselves responsible for how we feel. We make them the guilty ones instead of looking at the guilt in our own minds that we have projected onto them. What that does though is make us feel like helpless victims.

If indeed salvation comes from me, and it is of my choosing, I am able, at any time, to choose to know the truth about myself. No one can save me but me. No workshop leader, no guru, no course, no psychotherapist, not even Jesus can save me. It is all about my choice, and that choice is reflected in my willingness to look at my thoughts, take responsibility for them, recognize that everything I see is a projection of my own guilt mirrored back to me, and be willing to release it. I am not saying there are not teachers that help us in pointing us to the truth and inspiring and motivating us, only that the work must be done by us.

Jesus tells us, if God in His mercy wills that I be saved, it is already done. As he reminds us in Lesson 229, "' Love, which created me, is what I am'. Now need I seek no more. Love has prevailed."  (W.229.1.2-3) He has kept my Identity untouched and sinless.  Nothing we can do can ever mar our perfection. So why do we need salvation? We are reminded in Chapter 11, "As God's creation It [salvation] is yours, and belonging to you It is His. Your Self does not need salvation, but your mind needs to learn what salvation is. You are not saved from anything, but you are saved for glory. Glory is your inheritance, given you by your Creator that you might extend it. Yet if you hate part of your Self [another brother or sister] all your understanding is lost, because you are looking on what God created as yourself without love." (T.11.IV.1.2-6)(ACIM OE T.10.V.31)

In other words, any hatred, dislike, and anger, we have toward any of our brothers and sisters are what keep us from knowing we are already saved. Such thoughts hide the truth of who we are from our minds. " Therefore, look only to the power that God gave to save you, remembering that it is yours because it is His, and join with your brothers in His peace." (T.11.IV.2.5)

The ego also developed a plan for our salvation. Its plan is to hold grievances against others so the guilt in our minds would be seen to rest on them rather than on ourselves. So we play the game of blaming everyone else for our circumstance. The solution offered by the ego to get rid of our guilt actually maintains it because what the ego's proposed solution does is keep the guilt alive in our minds rather than undoing it. So while blaming others seems to save us from our guilt, it only maintains it. " Ideas leave not their source." (W.167.3.6) This is such good news because it affirms we are not the victims of the world we see.

The ego's guidance is to do everything on our own. Part of the ego's seductiveness is that it tries to persuade us to continue to believe that if we simply select the right combination of options from all available ones, we can be happy. It might be the right relationship, the right career, the right place to live, the right investment, the right numbers on the lottery tickets, the right job, or any combination of the above. But what the ego keeps hidden from us is the underlying content of these choices, which is sin, guilt and fear and a belief in separate interests. " The dreams you think you like would hold you back as much as those in which the fear is seen. For every dream is but a dream of fear, no matter what the form it seems to take. The fear is seen within, without, or both. Or it can be disguised in pleasant form. But never is it absent from the dream, for fear is the material of dreams, from which they all are made." (T. 29.IV.2.1-5)

Now we turn to another Guide, the Holy Spirit who offers us the memory of God's Love for us. Only then can we make another choice. In the world, all of our choices lead us nowhere. Jesus shows us that the only really meaningful choice we can make in time is to allow the Holy Spirit's purpose to guide us whenever we make a decision. Instead of looking for the perfect ego dream as we see it, we are learning to release our own judgments on how everything should be. When we release outcomes and expectations, we are learning to live in the flow of God's grace. What that requires is to recognize that we don't know our own best interests. We can't even identify what is a gain and what is a loss.

The Lesson offers us a beautiful opportunity today to use as a practice when we are tempted to get upset. If I see something disturbing to my mind, I can immediately respond with "God wills that I be saved from this." (W.335.1.1) We can choose to look at the situation from outside of the dream, from above the battleground. From this perspective, we can see the unreality of it all. None of it has any meaning. When we withdraw support from the illusions of war and malice, they go down to dust and we see the beauty of our brother's innocence and thus our own.

Today we go together in confidence that God is on the side of our happiness. I need but look upon all things that seem to hurt me and with perfect certainty and conviction say, "God wills that I be saved from this." (W.335.1.1) Anything that is causing you pain and unhappiness is grist for application of this Lesson. Tell yourself with assurance that God would not have you suffer. God only wants your happiness. This means if our experience is anything but happiness, we can step back and realize we must be seeing wrongly. God's Will for us is perfect happiness. Feel His protection and safety all through the day. Look at what you are projecting onto others. Realize there is nothing in the world that can affect you unless you give it the power to do so. Bring anything that seems hurtful to you to the Correction of the Holy Spirit. Look without guilt or fear at everything that seems to be upsetting to you today and watch it disappear. Remind yourself again and again about His kindness and love for you. Let His Love be felt surrounding you, reminding you of your innocence, which is not of your making, but has been given in your creation.

"Nothing has ever happened to disturb the peace of God the Father and the Son. This we accept as wholly true today." (W.234.1.4-5)

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Twenty One

III. The Responsibility for Sight

13 We have repeated how little is asked of you to learn this course. It is the same small willingness you need to have your whole relationship transformed to joy; the little gift you offer to the Holy Spirit for which He gives you everything; the very little on which salvation rests; the tiny change of mind by which the crucifixion is changed to resurrection. And being true, it is so simple that it cannot fail to be completely understood. Rejected yes, but not ambiguous. And if you choose against it now, it will not be because it is obscure, but rather that this little cost seemed in your judgment to be too much to pay for peace.

14 This is the only thing that you need do for vision, happiness, release from pain, and the complete escape from sin, all to be given you. Say only this, but mean it with no reservations, for here the power of salvation lies:

15 I am responsible for what I see.
I chose the feelings I experience, and I decided
on the goal I would achieve.
And everything that seems to happen to me
I asked for and received as I had asked.

16 Deceive yourself no longer that you are helpless in the face of what is done to you. Acknowledge but that you have been mistaken, and all effects of your mistakes will disappear.

17 It is impossible the Son of God be merely driven by events outside of him.

18 Begrudge not, then, this little offering. Withhold it, and you keep the world as now you see it. Give it away, and everything you see goes with it. Never was so much given for so little. In the holy instant is this exchange effected and maintained. Here is the world you do not want brought to the one you do. And here the one you do is given you because you want it. Yet for this, the power of your wanting must first be recognized. You must accept its strength and not its weakness. You must perceive that what is strong enough to make a world can let it go and can accept correction if it is willing to see that it was wrong.

19 The world you see is but the idle witness that you were right. This witness is insane. You trained it in its testimony, and as it gave it back to you, you listened and convinced yourself that what it saw was true. You did this to yourself. See only this, and you will also see how circular the reasoning on which your "seeing" rests. This was not given you. This was your gift to you and to your brother. Be willing, then, to have it taken from him and be replaced with truth. And as you look upon the change in him, it will be given you to see it in yourself.

20 Perhaps you do not see the need for you to give this little offering. Look closer, then, at what it is. And very simply see in it the whole exchange of separation for salvation. All that the ego is, is an idea that it is possible that things should happen to the Son of God without his will and thus without the Will of his Creator, Whose Will cannot be separate from his own.

21 This is the Son of God's replacement for his will, a mad revolt against what must forever be. This is the statement that he has the power to make God powerless and so to take it for himself and leave himself without what God has willed for him. This is the mad idea you have enshrined upon your altars and which you worship. And anything which threatens this seems to attack your faith, for here is it invested. Think not that you are faithless, for your belief and trust in this is strong indeed.

22 The Holy Spirit can give you faith in holiness and vision to see it easily enough. But you have not left open and unoccupied the altar where the gifts belong. Where they should be, you have set up your idols to something else. This other will, which seems to tell you what must happen, you gave reality. And what would show you otherwise must therefore seem unreal. All that is asked of you is to make room for truth. You are not asked to make or do what lies beyond your understanding. All you are asked to do is let it in; only to stop your interference with what will happen of itself; simply to recognize again the presence of what you thought you gave away.

23 Be willing for an instant to leave your altars free of what you placed upon them, and what is really there you cannot fail to see. The holy instant is not an instant of creation but of recognition. For recognition comes of vision and suspended judgment. Then only is it possible to look within and see what must be there plainly in sight and wholly independent of inference and judgment. Undoing is not your task, but it is up to you to welcome it or not. Faith and desire go hand in hand, for everyone believes in what he wants.

24 We have already said that wishful thinking is how the ego deals with what it wants to make it so. There is no better demonstration of the power of wanting, and therefore of faith, to make its goals seem real and possible. Faith in the unreal leads to adjustments of reality to make it fit the goal of madness. The goal of sin induces the perception of a fearful world to justify its purpose. What you desire you will see. And if its reality is false, you will uphold it by not realizing all the adjustments you have introduced to make it so.

25 When vision is denied, confusion of cause and effect becomes inevitable. The purpose now becomes to keep obscure the cause of the effect and make effect appear to be a cause. This seeming independence of effect enables it to be regarded as standing by itself and capable of serving as a cause of the events and feelings its maker thinks it causes. Long ago we spoke of your desire to create your own Creator and be father and not son to Him. This is the same desire. The Son is the effect, whose Cause he would deny. And so he seems to be the cause, producing real effects. Nothing can have effects without a cause and to confuse the two is merely to fail to understand them both.

26 It is as needful that you recognize you made the world you see as that you recognize that you did not create yourself. They are the same mistake. Nothing created not by your Creator has any influence over you. And if you think what you have made can tell you what you see and feel and place your faith in its ability to do so, you are denying your Creator and believing that you made yourself. For if you think the world you made has power to make you what it wills, you are confusing Son and Father, effect and Source.

27 The Son's creations are like his Father's. Yet in creating them, the Son does not delude himself that he is independent of his Source. His union with It is the Source of his creating. Apart from this he has no power to create, and what he makes is meaningless. It changes nothing in creation, depends entirely upon the madness of its maker, and cannot serve to justify the madness. Your brother thinks he made the world with you. Thus he denies creation. With you, he thinks the world he made, made him. Thus he denies he made it.

28 Yet the truth is you were both created by a loving Father Who created you together and as one. See what "proves" otherwise, and you deny your whole reality. But grant that everything which seems to stand between you keeping you from each other and separate from your Father you made in secret, and the instant of release has come to you. All its effects are gone because its source has been uncovered. It is its seeming independence of its source that kept you prisoner. This is the same delusion that you are independent of the Source by which you were created and have never left.
