Activism in Detroit 

Interested in learning more about Detroit? Come join students from across the University as we engage with the city through dialogue with community members and activists, explore city businesses and organizations on a walking tour, eat delicious, locally catered food, and use the new Connector shuttle between Detroit and the University of Michigan. The day is sponsored by Semester in Detroit, Michigan Community Scholars Program, and CASC.

Taking the Highway: Community Organizing against Extractivism in Argentina's Triple Border Area

The triple border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay has long been subjected to an extractivist economy, primarily in its role as a lead producer of timber and yerba mate. Both industrial and agriculture workers have been exploited extensively for decades, even as the region's biodiversity has been threatened. Rub�n Dar�o Ortiz, a community organizer and union activist from Argentina, will discuss recent efforts to organize workers as well as underpaid teachers in the context of this extractivism which continues under the center-left government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. The talk will emphasize the challenges to community organizing in this rural, triple border area as well as within a climate of Peronist patronage politics and corruption. Co-sponsored by Interdisciplinary Marxisms Group.

Union Organizing in Argentina: A Conversation with Ruben Ortiz
Ruben Ortiz is a high school history teacher and an experienced organizer from Argentina. He has worked organizing both teachers and yerba mate harvesters. Among his many talents, is his ability to master the highway blockade, which is a common form of protest throughout Latin America

The Praxis of Privilege

Professor Harry Brod has been a major scholar and activist on social justice issues for his entire career. He is a philosopher by training with a strong background in critical theories, and a long history of scholarship and activism related to many social justice issues and alliance building for change.

Building a Better Michigan

Building a Better Michigan (BBM) is a movement and student group to ensure that students' voices are heard in the upcoming renovations of the Rec Sports Buildings and University Union Buildings, and is looking for more Core members to work alongside university officials. The annual Michigan vs. Michigan State blood battle is currently under way! The blood drive is now through February 24. This year's goal is to donate 12,000 pints. The National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Research Program
