Apartheid, Segregation, and the Struggle for Social Justice: David Turnley

Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer, David Turnley, will be showing and speaking about his work from South Africa and the United States. Following Turnley, participants can organize their own small-group conversations on any topic of interest.

Announcements

Inaugural PH 350 Course Seeks More Students

Public Health 305 will introduce you to the major issues of environmental health science with a focus on the United States, though global health issues are considered as well. We will examine what those issues are, what determines them, and how they can be altered. Learn more here.

 

New UROP/IGR/Detroit Initiative Independent Study Course

Pat Gurin, IGR Research Director, is offering independent study credits to students interested in enrolling in "Leadership for Impact: Community Engagement and Social Justice" on Wednesdays 1-3 pm. Interested students must have participated in UROP, IGR, and/or the Detroit Initiative.  Course Numbers: Psych 326, UC 325, AC 388, or AC 389.

 

Newly Approved Context Cluster CASC Course: ORGSTUDY 203: Activism

Students will learn about the history of social movements in the US and other nations, as well as transnational social movements. They will study theories of social movement participation, strategies, tactics, and dynamics and apply these theories to historical, current, and hypothetical examples of activism. Students will also learn techniques for planning, implementing, and evaluating activist events.

 

Scholarship Opportunity

Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarships meant to assist students who aim to reduce tobacco use among certain priority populations set by the American Legacy Foundation. Learn more here. Application deadline is April 30, 2014.

 

Call for Proposals: Davis Projects for Peace

The Ginsberg Center for Community Service is calling for proposals for summer-long projects designed and implemented by undergraduate students passionate about peace in their communities and around the globe. The Sierra Club of Oakland County is looking for interns and volunteers interested in working on a grassroots campaign to urge DTE Energy, one of the most coal-depended utilities in the country, to move towards clean energy like wind and solar power. The National Institute on Drug Abuse Summer Research Program

Under this program, students underrepresented in the biomedical, social, clinical and behavioral sciences are paired with NIDA funded scientists at research institutions across the United States for 8-10 weeks during the summer to work in the field of substance abuse and addiction research.  Students receive a stipend, and if necessary and eligible, provisions for travel and housing expenses. The Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program

The Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program is a social justice program that trains, inspires, and sustains leaders. Fellows gain field experience fighting hunger and poverty through placements in community based organizations across the country, and policy experience through placements in Washington, D.C.
