A COURSE IN MIRACLES
CH 18 "THE DREAM AND THE REALITY"
IX. THE PURPOSE OF THE BODY

The Thought of God surrounds your little kingdom, waiting at the barrier you built to come inside and shine upon the barren ground. See how life springs up everywhere! The desert becomes a garden, green and deep and quiet, offering rest to those who lost their way and wander in the dust. Give them a place of refuge, prepared by love for them where once a desert was. And everyone you welcome will bring love with him from Heaven for you. They enter one by one into this holy place, but they will not depart as they had come, alone. The love they brought with them will stay with them, as it will stay with you. And under its beneficence, your little garden will expand and reach out to everyone who thirsts for living water but has grown too weary to go on alone.

*IAMBIC PENTAMETER* Example MP3
What is 'Iambic Pentameter'?

With this review, we take but one idea

each day, and practice it as often as

is possible. Besides the time we give

morning and evening, which should not be less

than fifteen minutes, and the hourly

remembrances we make throughout the day,

use the idea as often as you can

between them. Each of these ideas alone

would be sufficient for salvation, if

it is learned truly. Each would be enough

to give release to you and to the world

from every form of bondage, and invite

the memory of God to come again.

With this in mind, we start our practicing

in which we carefully review the thoughts

the Holy Spirit has bestowed on us

in our last twenty lessons. Each contains

   the whole curriculum, if understood,

practiced, accepted and applied to all

the seeming happenings throughout the day.

One is enough. But for that one there must

be no exceptions made. And so we need

to use them all, and let them blend as one

as each contributes to the whole we learn.

These practice lessons, like our last review,

are centered round a central theme with which

we start and end each lesson. It is this:

   " I am not a body. I am free.

For I am still as God created me."

The day begins and ends with this. And we

repeat it every time the hour strikes,

or we remember, in between, we have

a function that transcends the world we see.

Beyond this and a repetition of

the special thought we practice for the day,

no form of exercise is urged, except

   a deep relinquishing of everything

that clutters up your mind, and makes it deaf

to reason, sanity and simple truth.

We will attempt to get beyond all words

and special forms of practicing for this

review. For we attempt this time to reach

a quickened pace along a shorter path

to the serenity and peace of God.

We merely close our eyes, and then forget

all that we thought we saw and understood.

For thus is freedom given us from all

we did not know and failed to understand.

There is but one exception to this lack

of structuring. Permit no idle thought

to go unchallenged. If you notice one,

deny its hold and hasten to assure

your mind that this is not what it would have.

Then gently let the thought which you denied

be given up in sure and quick exchange

for the idea we practice for the day.

When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim

your freedom from temptation, as you say:

" This thought I do not want. I choose instead..."

And then repeat the idea for the day,

and let it take the place of what you thought.

   Beyond such special applications of

each day's idea, we will add but few

   formal expressions for specific thoughts

to aid your practicing. Instead we give

these times of quiet to the Teacher Who

instructs in quiet, speaks of peace, and gives

our thoughts whatever meaning they may have.

To Him I offer this review for you.

I place you in His charge, and let Him teach

you what to do and say and think each time

you turn to Him. He will not fail to be

available to you each time you call

to Him to help you. Let us offer Him

the whole review we now begin, and let

us also not forget to Whom it has

been given, as we practice, day by day,

   advancing toward the goal He set for us;

allowing Him to teach us how to go,

and trusting Him completely for the way

each practice period can best become

a loving gift of freedom to the world.

LESSON 205 ~ Review VI
[185] I want the peace of God.

Sarah's Commentary:

There are many things we still think we want in this world. But what we truly want, behind all of these things, is the truth, joy, love and peace that can only come from our connection with the Self that we truly are. All of the drama in our lives and the image we try to create of what and who we are hide this truth from our awareness. The ego tells us we can find the peace and joy in the things it offers us, including its most boasted gift--the special relationship. And we have fallen for its offerings, pursuing all of the things we think we need in order to be happy, but it is precisely these distractions of the ego keep us from the happiness we seek. When we realize this, we may become disillusioned, and this is a good thing even though it does not feel that way.  Most of us get started on the spiritual path because of disillusionment. It is a path devoted to removing the blocks to the Presence that contains the real peace that is our inheritance. In other words, there is nothing to seek because the peace is already in us, blocked by the thoughts that keep it from our awareness.

Although this experience of becoming disillusioned with the world is one of disruption and conflict for us, it is, nevertheless, a signal that can motivate us to find a better way. Precisely when everything seems to be going wrong in our ego world, the opportunity arises for such a choice to be made. When we are motivated to give up our way, which no longer seems to be working for us, we are ready to open to another way. Thus, we open the door for the shift to take place. So instead of lamenting our condition, this is a time for faith and trust. Without  such disruptions in our lives, we would not necessarily seek the truth. It is not unlike what we are told in Chapter 17 (T.17.V.3) (ACIM OE T.17.VI.45) about how much disruption happens in our lives when a special relationship is given over for healing so it can become holy. The goal for the relationship is changed quickly and thus the relationship can seem very disruptive. When there is a decision to heal the relationship, the purpose is changed and now the ego counsels us to give up the relationship. Yet the only real solution is to change the relationship to meet the new goal. Faith then will take us through the distress we encounter along the way.

The transition is a difficult time because there seems to be no comfort and nothing to hang onto that we formerly understood. Remembering that this is a blessing will take us to a place of deeper peace and will help us to stay committed to the changes. The temptation is to find a relationship that will suit the old goal of specialness, but the ego's mantra is seek and do not find. There is no point in making another substitution. Jesus simply asks that we have faith and trust. It is a time to focus on the good. The peace of God will never come through the counsel of the ego. This counsel is the voice that insistently offers us advice on how to solve the problems in our own way. This always means turning to the ego as our teacher on what to do. To follow the ego's counsel is never about solving problems, but actually about keeping them. Problems are only solved through the release of guilt. Guilt is the source of every problem. Now the way to peace is offered us in this workbook, where day by day we can turn to the Holy Spirit to give us a new interpretation to every situation we encounter. Yes, there will be resistance because this path means change. Fear will come up and we may be tempted to return to the ego's counsel. That is why our steps on this path are so firmly reinforced.

It seems that everyone talks about wanting peace and yet the world was made to keep peace out. The search for peace in the world always seems to be about fighting for it. It seems that conflict becomes the way that is so often chosen to resolve difficult situations in the belief that war will bring peace. Peace will not come by changing external circumstances. We will only know peace when we experience it internally. That is why it is so important to set our goal in advance and take the time each day to be still. We can practice these Lessons every time we are tempted to get out of peace. When someone seems to be attacking, we can remember to see their call for love under the attack. It is an opportunity we are given to bless them instead of attacking back. Each time we are able to respond from love, we will experience the blessing for ourselves. Each time we respond to the temptation to become angry and distressed, we will bring more guilt into our minds, but we can choose peace instead. Thus, we join in love and gratitude with our brother who is truly our savior and offers us many opportunities to bless instead of curse. Our "enemies" really are the teachers of peace. They bring forth our unhealed issues so we could truly let them go with help from the Holy Spirit. Now the peace in us can shine through.

Today we walk in faith and trust that everything is perfect for our healing and awakening. The Holy Spirit will guide our way and lead us to the peace of God. With readiness, willingness and a passion to know the truth, we can make great strides today. Teachers of peace are in our lives right now. With extension and forgiveness, we can know that they are our saviors.

Remember today, "The peace of God is everything I want. The peace of God is my one goal; the aim of all my living here, the end I seek, my purpose and my function and my life, while I abide where I am not at home." (W.205.1.2) We truly are not at home here. We all feel like aliens here. None of us feel at home here, though for some this reality may be pushed further from awareness than for others. I know I often go about distracted with my seeming life in this world and I don't think much about the fact that this is not meant to be my home. Some time ago I was at a function with Latvian athletes who were here for the Masters Games. I had to work to try to bring back some of my Latvian speaking skills and was doing fine with meeting people from my birth country until the singing started. Much to my surprise the tears started to flow unabated. I was helpless, unable to stop this flow of tears. We went to the car as I was completely losing control of my emotions and I sat and cried and cried. This experience was similar to the emotions that came up for me years ago when I saw the movie, "Trip to Bountiful" also about the pull to go home. The movie ends with the song "Softly and Gently Jesus is Calling," calling all of us to come home.

In both situations, I felt such a longing for home but, as Jesus says, it is not really our childhood home we long for, but our home in God. Lesson 182 speaks to us very poignantly about this pull to go home. "Perhaps you think it is your childhood home that you would find again." (W.182.4.1) "He desires to go home so deeply, so unceasingly, His voice cries unto you to let Him rest a while." (W.182.5.3) In the Course, Jesus reminds us over and over that our home is not here. We think here is the only home we think we know, as Lesson 166 reminds us. "He does not realize that it is here he is afraid indeed, and homeless, too; an outcast wandering so far from home, so long away, he does not realize he has forgotten where he came from, where he goes, and even who he really is." (W.166.4.4) "This world you seem to live in is not home to you." (W.182.1.1) "A memory of home keeps haunting you, as if there were a place that called you to return, although you do not recognize the voice, nor what it is the voice reminds you of." (W.182.1.3)

Lesson 200 invites us simply to "come home," but what does that mean in the context of today's Lesson? It means we can only come home when we connect to the peace of God and ultimately remember who we are. That is what calls to us from deep within. Only here we know we are at home. It is only when we connect to this deep peace within. Searching for anything else is a futile search. There is no happiness in the world. There is no real contentment. There is no home that can shelter us anywhere in this world. "You who are part of God are not at home except in His peace. If peace is eternal, you are at home only in eternity." (T.5.III.10.7-8) In Chapter 19, (T.19.IV.A.2.1)(ACIM OE T.19.V.a.40) Jesus asks why we would want peace homeless, and homeless it is until we realize that only by offering peace to everyone can we find "a home in Heaven the world cannot destroy." (T.25.IV.4.9)(ACIM OE T.25.V.35) "

This Lesson is clear in reminding us that the body is not our home. In Chapter 4, Jesus says that "The ego has built a shabby and unsheltering home for you, because it cannot build otherwise. Do not try to make this impoverished house stand. Its weakness is your strength. Only God could make a home that is worthy of His creations, who have chosen to leave it empty by their own dispossession. Yet His home will stand forever, and is ready for you when you choose to enter it." (T.4.I.11.1-5)(ACIM OE T.4.II.18) And we are told in Chapter 20, "Your home has called to you since time began, nor have you ever failed entirely to hear." (T.20.II.8.5)(ACIM OE T.20. III.12)

Only in God can we find peace. Nothing in this world will ever content us. But while we are here, we can use everything in this world as a classroom for our awakening. Powerful healing can take place through our relationships when we turn them over to the Holy Spirit for His guidance.

A Course in Miracles

Chapter Eighteen

 The Dream and the Reality

IX. The Purpose of the Body

71 It is only the awareness of the body that makes love seem limited. For the body is a limit on love. The belief in limited love was its origin, and it was made to limit the unlimited. Think not that this is merely allegorical, for it was made to limit you. Can you who see yourselves within a body know yourself as an idea? Everything you recognize you identify with externals, something outside itself. You cannot even think of God without a body or some form you think you recognize.

72 The body cannot know. And while you limit your awareness to its tiny senses, you will not see the grandeur which surrounds you. God cannot come into a body, nor can you join Him there. Limits on love will always seem to shut Him out and to keep you apart from Him. The body is a tiny fence around a little part of a glorious and complete idea. It draws a circle, infinitely small, around a very little segment of Heaven splintered from the whole, proclaiming that within it is your kingdom, where God can enter not.

73 Within this kingdom the ego rules, and cruelly. And to defend this little speck of dust, it bids you fight against the universe. This fragment of your mind is such a tiny part of it that, could you but appreciate the whole, you would see instantly that it is like the smallest sunbeam to the sun or like the faintest ripple on the surface of the ocean. In its amazing arrogance, this tiny sunbeam has decided it is the sun; this almost imperceptible ripple hails itself as the ocean. Think how alone and frightened is this little thought, this infinitesimal illusion, holding itself apart against the universe. The sun becomes the sunbeam's "enemy" which would devour it, and the ocean terrifies the little ripple and wants to swallow it.

74 Yet neither sun nor ocean is even aware of all this strange and meaningless activity. They merely continue, unaware that they are feared and hated by a tiny segment of themselves. Even that segment is not lost to them, for it could not survive apart from them. And what it thinks it is in no way changes its total dependence on them for its being. Its whole existence still remains in them. Without the sun the sunbeam would be gone; the ripple without the ocean is inconceivable.

75 Such is the strange position in which those in a world inhabited by bodies seem to be. Each body seems to house a separate mind, a disconnected thought living alone and in no way joined to the Thought by which it was created. Each tiny fragment seems to be self-contained needing each other for some things but by no means totally dependent on their one Creator for everything and needing the whole to give them any meaning, for by themselves they do mean nothing. Nor have they any life apart and by themselves.

76 Like to the sun and ocean your Self continues, unmindful that this tiny part regards itself as you. It is not missing; it could not exist if it were separate, nor would the whole be whole without it. It is not a separate kingdom, ruled by an idea of separation from the rest. Nor does a fence surround it, preventing it from joining with the rest and keeping it apart from its Creator. This little aspect is no different from the whole, being continuous with it and at one with it. It leads no separate life because its life is the oneness in which its being was created.

77 Do not accept this little fenced-off aspect as yourself. The sun and ocean are as nothing beside what you are. The sunbeam sparkles only in the sunlight, and the ripple dances as it rests upon the ocean. Yet in neither sun nor ocean is the power that rests in you. Would you remain within your tiny kingdom, a sorry king, a bitter ruler of all he surveys who looks on nothing, yet who would still die to defend it? This little self is not your kingdom. Arched high above it and surrounding it with love is the glorious whole, which offers all its happiness and deep content to every part. The little aspect which you think you set apart is no exception.

78 Love knows no bodies and reaches to everything created like itself. Its total lack of limit is its meaning. It is completely impartial in its giving, encompassing only to preserve and keep complete what it would give. In your tiny kingdom, you have so little! Should it not, then, be there that you would call on love to enter? Look at the desert, dry and unproductive, scorched and joyless, which makes up your little kingdom. And realize the life and joy which love would bring to it from where it comes and where it would return with you.

79 The Thought of God surrounds your little kingdom, waiting at the barrier you built to come inside and shine upon the barren ground.

80 Go out and find them, for they bring your Self with them. And lead them gently to your quiet garden and receive their blessing there. So will it grow and stretch across the desert, leaving no lonely little kingdoms locked away from love and leaving you inside. And you will recognize yourself and see your little garden gently transformed into the Kingdom of Heaven with all the love of its Creator shining upon it. The holy instant is your invitation to love, to enter into your bleak and joyless kingdom, and to transform it into a garden of peace and welcome.

81 Love's answer is inevitable. It will come because you came without the body and interposed no barriers which would interfere with its glad coming. In the holy instant, you ask of love only what it offers everyone, neither less nor more. Asking for everything, you will receive it. And your shining Self will lift the tiny aspect which you tried to hide from Heaven straight into Heaven. No part of love calls on the whole in vain. No Son of God remains outside His Fatherhood.

82 Be sure of this-love has entered your special relationship and entered fully at your weak request. You do not recognize that love has come because you have not yet let go of all the barriers you hold against each other. And you will not be able to give love welcome separately. You could no more know God alone than He knows you without your brother. But together you could no more be unaware of love than love could know you not or fail to recognize itself in you.

83 You have reached the end of an ancient journey, not realizing yet that it is over. You are still worn and tired and the desert's dust still seems to cloud your eyes and keep you sightless. Yet He Whom you welcomed has come to you and would welcome you. He has waited long to give you this. Receive it now of Him, for He would have you know Him. Only a little wall of dust still stands between you. Blow on it lightly and with happy laughter and it will fall away and walk into the garden love has prepared for both of you.
