SOME OF OUR NEW CLASSES...

Yoga & HIIT with Aly Bowker
We'll start off with yoga to warm the body up, transition into some butt-kicking HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) exercises, and then finish up with some more yoga. HIIT helps improve cardiovascular health, builds muscle mass, and boosts metabolism. The class is designed to push yourself to your own limit, making it accessible to all fitness levels.

Roots of Consciousness with Jordan Ross
Roots of consciousness blends technical cues with the deeper elements of a yoga practice. Perfect for both beginners and advanced students, we go through the postures and discover how to perform them in a way that is healthy for YOUR body, taking from the Iyengar method of using bodily awareness as a bridge to a more peaceful, joyful mindset and life experience.

FreedOM Warriors with Michellene Kandert
A weekly Blissology mash-up for those who want a stronger practice than the Yin-Yassa offers in the weekly series.  I try to play up the arm balances & inversions as well as the transitions from posture to posture each week. It is a more intense, strength building practice tapping into both mental & physical discipline. I like to try and keep yogi's in the present moment by not being overly predicable with sequencing.

KULA COLLECTIVE

A sincere thanyou to all of the participants, vendors, and volunteers that made our first International Day of Yoga event such a huge success! Ten amazing teams took yoga to the streets and garnered lots of smiles from our St. Albert neighbours. Congratulations to The Spartan Chix who took top spot.

What's your Passion?
I have discovered my passion (although I feel I have more than one) after our trip this year to Indonesia. It has been lurking below the surface for some time but, interestingly enough, I needed to go away to find what was closest to my heart. My passion is teaching yoga, it is the fuel that makes my inner light burn brightly and spread its warmth. I love all aspects of yoga and really enjoy sharing what I am discovering on a daily basis with my students. As I continue to share what I learn, it is truly gratifying to see students change and grow as they embrace what most resonates with them.

Why yoga?
Yoga is the only physical practice that I have stayed with, consistently, for any length of time. It's been 16 years and at first, it was all about the asana. As I started to explore yoga further, I realized that it was about much more than the physical practice. This intrigued me so I started to delve deeper and realized that yoga is, for me, a way to learn about myself, ask myself important questions and work to grow into the person I want to become. Yoga is also continuing to teach me about how to be a responsible, kind and loving person to myself, my friends and the world around me. I continue to be a work in progress.

What is nourishment to you?
Nourishment to me is the feeling I get during or after class when I feel that I have planted a seed or offered a different idea during class, that resonates in the mind of one of my students that they want to explore. This is nourishment for my Heart Center which is the area that I try to expand daily in myself and share  during my classes.

What are you working on?
I am working on a 200 hr teaching certificate with Purna Yoga. Purna means complete and it incorporates alignment based asana and Pranayama, meditation, nutrition & lifestyle as well as applied yogic philosophy. I am working on the most important part of yoga and that is taking it off the mat and living it in my daily life.

What would surprise people to know about you?
I love to cook and enjoy trying to make different organic, nourishing meals that are also a joy to eat. I enjoy learning about food and nutrition and the ways we can keep our bodies and minds healthy with good food. I have also just finished making my first batch of sauerkraut, with many more to come.

OM Kitchen Recipe

This month's recipe comes from Michellene Kandert of Lotus & Lettuce.
SHRIMP & ZUCCHINI NEST

25-30 raw peeled shrimp
5 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 cup fresh chopped parsley
2 tsp paprika
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/2 cup organic veggie broth
1/4 cup white wine
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 medium zucchini, sliced into noodles
Place first six ingredients into a ziplock bag and marinate in the fridge for an hour. Heat skillet on med-low and add contents of ziplock. Cook until shrimp is pink on all sides. Remove from pan with slotted spoon leaving juices. Turn up heat to medium and add white wine and lemon juice, allow to boil for about three minutes, add zucchini noodles, sauté for two min and toss in the shrimp to combine. Serve hot.
