LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Laura McCarten I'd like to start by wishing all my fellow Chamber members a Happy New Year as we move into 2015. After serving on the Minneapolis Regional Chamber Board for the past five years, I am honored to take over the Chair role from Bill Jonason. As Chair these past two years, Bill led the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce (MRCC) through solid growth, sharpened our operating procedures and policies, and put in place some new tools that will help this organization function efficiently and effectively going forward. Bill also revived the Annual Meeting luncheon, where we can gather to celebrate our success and tout this region's power and accomplishments. Please Join me for this year's lively event on February 19th. Thank you Bill!!

The MRCC is a vibrant and impactful organization, driven by a top-notch staff, a dedicated Board and an engaged membership. We've accomplished much and I look forward to building on past successes in the coming year. Here are some of my goals and commitments for the organization going forward:

This organization will continue to be effective at both the local and regional level. Over the past few years, our area chambers in Bloomington and Northeast Minneapolis have enhanced their programming, community outreach and effectiveness on behalf of businesses in their area. At the same time the MRCC continues to engage in a variety of initiatives across the metro area, all designed to grow jobs and keep this market competitive on a world stage.

We will be heavily involved in the 2015 legislative session on the critical issues of transportation and workforce development. At the December 2014 Board meeting, the MRCC Board of Directors passed a transportation resolution calling for "sufficient new spending, combined with increased efficiencies, not only to maintain the current level of service, but also to expand it as necessary to remain economically competitive with other regions across the country." We are already working with MnDOT and the Met Council to craft an effective program knowing it means efficient movement of workers, goods and services, and a region that can compete for new jobs and businesses.

We will build on the opportunities presented by the 2018 Super Bowl and 2019 Final Four events. We will work with our partners across the region to make the most of these events and to attract more international gatherings to our great community. Every study shows that once people experience Minneapolis-Saint Paul, they are likely to return.

We will continue to deliver the core services that our members value and expect. Knowing that many of you want access to the latest information, new prospects and government leaders, our three chambers will offer you the choice of more than 150 programs and events this year. No one matches the quality of our programs, and the staff assures me that this year's selection will be even better.

There is much work to do in 2015 and we are eager to get started. Of course, without your financial support and participation we would be powerless. Thank you for providing the power behind our efforts. And please, contact me directly with any questions or advice.

The Opus Group

The Opus Group has completed four projects for the Minnesota-based retailer Gander Mountain.  Opus built three new 52,000-square-foot Gander Mountain stores in Augusta, Georgia; Newnan, Georgia and Algonquin, Illinois; and managed renovations of the retailer's 96,275-square-foot store in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The 80's were not known for subtlety. Hair was high, shoulders were wide, cordless phones were humongous, and the bid for world dominance by Microsoft Windows 1.0 was being challenged by the upstart Apple Macintosh. Laugh if you want, but this decade was obviously the start of something big. January 24, the Bloomington Chamber takes you back to the era of glorious excess in fashion, music, fads and over-the-top fun.

Be a part of the most fun, talked-about event of the season. It's gonna be big.

Got the Urge to Network? ConnectForLunch Dramatically Updated

Our ConnectForLunch program has just been dramatically updated. Instead of the current version, which offered only one day each week, the new version will now be available three days every week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 52 weeks a year.

And there's more improvements. Lots more:

  • You'll have more choices: Now you can choose which restaurant you'd like to go to, instead of being assigned to a particular restaurant by the software. French cuisine? Italian? Vegetarian? A restaurant that's close by? The choice is yours.
  • And more choices: You can choose to meet new contacts, renew contacts with businesspeople you've met before, or both. Just pick the group you'd like to join... or start your own group.
  • And more flexibility: Instead of the current twice-a-month subscription which restricted you to only two lunches a month, you'll be able to buy packets of five, ten or twenty lunches which can be used at any time. Any unused lunches are fully refundable within six months after purchase.
  • And even more flexibility: Have an opening in your schedule? No more waiting until next week to go to lunch: you can go to lunch as early as the next day.
