CASC Announcements
CASC T-Shirt Design Contest 
We are redesigning our t-shirts and we want your designs! Put your creative skills to the test and create the next CASC t-shirt. T-shirt designs must include the following: the CASC logo, a front and back design, a catchy slogan that encompasses CASC values and principles, no more than three colors. The designs will be voted on and approved by the CASC Student Board and the CASC Faculty Committee. We may ask for modifications to designs. Submissions are due by midnight on February 28. You can email your submission to [email protected] or leave a hard copy in the CASC Program Office - 3833 in the SSW. Please send questions to Alice.

 

SSW Room Reservation Policies and Student Org Info

CASC students have access to two of the School of Social Work study rooms in the Lower Level. These rooms may be reserved or used on a first come, first served basis. In addition, student organizations lead by CASC minor students can reserve rooms in the School of Social Work if they register their groups with the Center for Campus Involvement and the Office of Student Services. Registration with the Office of Student Services for the Winter term is due by February 21, 2014.

Social Work Allies for Immigrant Rights
Would you like to learn more about immigrant rights? Wondering what is happening in Michigan or in the US? Bring your curiosity, grab free food and learn what SWAIR plans to do this semester and beyond!

Speak Out

The United Coalition for Racial Justice (UCRJ) invites CASC students to their event, "Speak Out," to protest low enrollment of underrepresented minorities and a poor racial climate for students of color at U-M. Learn more here.

Bangladeshi Garment Workers Speak Out at UM 

United Students Against Sweatshops is conducting a nationwide "End Deathtraps" worker tour with Kalpona Akter and Reba Sikder, two Bangladeshi garment workers leaders who are leading the fight in Bangladesh for safe workplaces and living wages. Reba is a survivor of the Rana Plaza factory collapse that claimed the lives of over 1,100 Bangladeshi garment workers. They will speak about the causes and consequences of deadly factory disasters in Bangladesh, and their struggle to force brands to accept responsibility for safety conditions in their factories by signing the Bangladesh Safety Accord, a legally enforceable agreement that will transform the Bangladesh garment industry from deathtraps to safe workplaces. To find out more about this event, or to cosponsor it, please contact Katie Corbit, 269-370-2459

The Merit Series: Reinventing the Classroom Experience 

The Merit Series will host its next event on Reinventing the Classroom Experience. It will focus on innovative teaching methods consistent with the modern era. We hope to discuss gamifying education, interactive learning, and alternative teaching methods. Learn more here

Ann Arbor SOUP 
Ann Arbor SOUP is a micro-granting dinner celebrating creative projects in Ann Arbor. For $5 you receive soup, salad, and a vote. You will see four presentations from people with projects ranging from art to agriculture, social justice to social entrepreneurship, education to technology and many more! The presenters will first share their idea and then answer questions from diners. After the presentations, we eat, connect, share resources, and vote on which project you think should win the money gathered from the night. As we come to a close, we tally the ballots and whoever has the most votes takes home the money collected at the door. Learn more or apply here

Telling the Untold Truth
The Spectrum Center talks about the misconception that sexualized violence can only occur in heterosexual relationships or between cisgendered people.

Alternative Breaks at Home
Alternative Breaks at Home work towards making components of engaged service and active citizenship something individuals can seek out in order to make an impact on their community. ABH allows students to utilize leadership skills and passion for change and engage in the components of service-learning in an independent setting. Learn more here.

Equity Within the Classroom Conference Seeks Student Speaker
The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives is looking for an undergraduate student speaker to address the audience of the Equity Within the Classroom Conference on Tuesday, April 1. U-M Flint Social Work Course Seeks Ann Arbor Students
SWR 389, a pilot-course at U-M Flint, offers a faculty-led global experience that includes face-to-face course instruction in Xi-an, China. The project-based course is intended to engage students in inter-cultural exchange and interdisciplinary learning. Contact Professor Diane Fuselier-Thompson with questions or if interested.

International Institute Individual Fellowships

The International Institute is offering individual fellowships to students who, regardless of citizenship, are enrolled in a dual degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research outside the US. Center for Progressive Leadership Spring/Summer Internship

The Center for Progressive Leadership is seeking an intern to help support a Michigan leadership development nonprofit, specifically with tasks related to the Economic Justice Alliance of Michigan, minimum wage campaign, and alumni engagement. Join a New Social Justice Student Magazine 

As part of the optiMize Challenge, a group of students plans to create a magazine that will share journalistic stories and photographs online and in print about people and organizations of all backgrounds relating to social equality. The magazine is looking for journalists, strong writers, photojournalists, a webdesigner familiar with WordPress and page designers familiar with InDesign. The Community and Social Change Masters Program

The Community and Social Change Masters Program, offered by the University of Miami, is accepting applications for Fall 2014. CapCorps Midwest

Cap Corps volunteers work full time with a non-profit in one of these areas: immigration, food justice, poverty, literacy, education, community development and more.
