Perfect Timing
We love when these things happen . . . this 30 year old woman was spotted at the hospital in Guatemala when we had a surgical team performing cleft lip/palate surgeries on the March 13-22 trip. Our team approached her and asked if she would be interested in having surgery in which she responded YES! The surgeons put her on the schedule for the week and after all these years, she is now wearing a new smile!
Meet Our New Friend, Betio
We would like to introduce you to Betio. He is 9 years old and has Muscular Dystrophy. We met Betio in January during the University of Missouri PiPhi Sorority Trip and he totally captured our hearts. At that time, the team took on the project to construct a patio at his house which would enable him to move around easier. Since our visit, we learned that he had fallen into a fire and had been severely burned. After hearing this, we began helping to support his family as well as providing him with much needed physical therapy.
A Project Of Love
Earlier this year, the students from St. John Bosco School located in Hammond, IN, participated in a school project to design T-Shirts for the children of Guatemala. Pre-K - 8th Grade students worked side by side with each other to create these unique designs.
We were so excited to distribute the T-Shirts during the March 13-22 trip to the children we met. This was such a great project in which all children involved where blessed. Thank you St. John Bosco for sharing your love with the children of Guatemala in this special way!
Rick Broz Blog: Epilogue
Rick traveled with HIM to Guatemala on the January 23 - February 1 trip. This is where his blog all began. The following thoughts are taken from the Epilogue of his blog:
"It wasn't until March when I finally figured out that what I was writing was a love story. Not a story about two lovers, but just a story about one, ole lover. You see this lover had lost practically all the joy and meaning from his life. Profoundly unhappy, he took a risk and did something completely out of character. In doing that it just changed his life. He took a trip that re-formed his identity, gave him a new point of view and swapped his old defective world view for an accurate one. This didn't happen with out help from others. He found himself among an assembly of the finest people performing Christ's work. During the trip he found some happiness that he could indeed, love again. Down there I lived and worked with the most amazing group of people I have ever met. I call all of them "Horses of Christ". How would I not fall in love with this place and all the people? Like you, I've spent an inordinate part of my life learning skills and gaining knowledge and perspective. I want to share what I have learned in this life, and to make a difference, the biggest difference that I can."
Interested In Going To Ecuador?
There is a possibility that HIM may have the opportunity to go to Ecuador in November of 2015. This trip's focus is General Medical and Physical Therapy. There will also be a need for translators. This is going to be a 10 day trip and the approximate cost will be $1200.00 plus airfare. At this time, the dates have not yet been decided. Unfortunately before we can commit to going, we need to make sure we will be able to put a team together. If you are interested in joining us, either email us at [email protected] or call the office at 219-924-2446.
HIM Provides Books For Purdue University
Purdue University Calumet, located in Hammond, IN, has created a program with their English students entitled "Books For Books". This program requires students to collaborate with an organization in the community in effort to obtain books for this book exchange program. HIM Resale Shoppe was happy to be able to provide them with books that will be placed in the Purdue University Library and the Purdue University Writing Center. This book exchange is completely free to students, faculty and the general public.
University Of Illinois Chicago Students Volunteer
On Saturday, April 18 we welcomed 7 students from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) at our Resale Shoppe. These students were participating in the University's 6th Annual Day of Service where students volunteer their time to assist local community organizations. This was UIC's largest event ever and we were so glad to be chosen to be one of their community partners. Thank you UIC for allowing us to be a part of this great opportunity and a special thanks to the students who volunteered at our Resale Shoppe.
Mt. Carmel High School Collects 1800 Lbs. Of Clothes
The football team of Mount Carmel Catholic High School for Boys in Chicago collected over 1800 lbs. of clothing to be distributed to those we serve. On April 29th, we drove out in our truck to pick it all up, meet the team and thank them for doing an amazing job at collecting all those clothes!!!
HIM Helps Seniors At Genesis Towers in Gary, IN
Once again HIM visited the residents of the Gary Housing Authority/Genesis Towers in Gary, IN. The morning is spent helping them clean and organize their apartments. Afterwards we provide them with a lunch in their community room for those who are able to attend. We also deliver lunches to the residents who are unable to leave their rooms. We're so glad that we are able to make this a monthly event where we can catch up with old friends and make new ones. It's a great day for all of us!
