Welcome To The Reese House
Daniela, she is 8 months old and came to join us at The Reese House with her sister Zaida. They are our newest arrivals joining us the last week of June.
Zaida is 20 months old and came with her sister Daniela. Both of these little ones were being abused and neglected by their stepfather. Their mother turned them over to court system and the judge placed them in our care due to their poor health and malnutrition.
Luis Fernando (holding the white guitar) is 9 years old. It didn't take him very long to adjust to his new surroundings and to get busy making friends with the students in our Music In Motion Program.
Juan Antonio is 9 years old. He came to the Reese House with his brother Luis Antonio. They are Mayan and Juan Antonio only speaks Queqchi their native language. His brother Luis Antonio speaks Spanish also and is able to translate for him.
Luis Antonio is 12 years old and he came with his brother, Juan Antonio. They came to us after the Police removed them from the streets where they were found asking for money and their father, who is blind, was not able to be located.
Guatemalan Firefighters Visit HIM Office
In May, Commandante Cesar Augusto Gonzalez Arroyo, head of the Volunteer Fire Department in Guatemala; Jorge Luis Gonzalez Arroyo, Firefighter from Guatemala City; and Edgar Rolando Cornejo Saenz, Firefighter from Guatemala City stopped in at the HIM office to pick up firefighter equipment to take back to Guatemala that was donated to our Hearts On Fire Program.
We also spent a day with them at the Romeoville Fire Department to make future plans for training in Guatemala as well as bringing Guatemalan Firefighters up here to train at their Department.
PT Equipment Needed
HIM currently is operating 3 Physical Therapy Clinics in Guatemala. All the equipment at these facilities has been donated but unfortunately after 10 years of use, much of the equipment is no longer functioning and can no longer be repaired due to its age. At this time we are in need of: Therapeutic Ultrasound Units; Electric Stimulation Units capable of TENS, NMES and Interferential Stimulation; Paraffin Unit; Splint Pans; Heat Gun for Splinting; Microwave to heat Moist Heat Packs; Microwavable Hot Packs; BOSU Balls/Discs. If you are able to help us acquire these items, contact the office at 219-924-2446 or email us at [email protected].
Grand Opening HIM's Second Retail/Resale Shoppe
On May 1st, HIM opened our second Retail/Resale Shoppe in Schererville, IN. This store will not only offer a variety of resale items but will also feature local hand crafted items creating a unique shopping experience. Proceeds from this store along with our Munster location help to support the many programs of HIM.
School Supply Drive For Guatemala
The last week in June we received a donation of school supplies from the 2014-15 Valparaiso, IN High School Rotary Sponsored Interact Club. This group held a school supply drive the last 2 days of school by setting out boxes saying "Help Children In Guatemala - HIM School Supply Drive" giving the students the option to donate their unwanted school supplies instead of throwing them away. The donation boxes were continually overflowing while the garbage cans next to them were empty. This was their first project as a new club and it was a huge success. Thank you Valpo High School.
