Happy Belated February! Good grief, this newsletter is coming to you a little late. Even though this is a short month, there is A LOT going on this month at Ballare!

Dancers in level II-V are busy preparing for the Excellent Adventure, taking place Saturday, March 5 at 2 pm at Minnehaha Academy north campus. This is a kid friendly show, and I encourage all of you to come. Details about the show and tickets are below.

I have been busy getting the summer schedule done and up on the website! It is partially done, and more will be added daily as I finalize everything. We have great camps for dancers age 3 through 1st grade, as well as two sessions of weekly creative dance and technique classes for Fundamental and Level I A and B. Look for week long technique classes to be added. AND of course we have our audition workshops for levels II-V. Dancers in these levels need to continue to dance in the summer so that they don't lose all the great technique and muscle memory they have gained this year.

Picture Day is set for Sunday, May 15. The schedule will be handed out as soon as it is done, but for sure by the family visitation week, March 7-13. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THIS VISITATION! Important performance information will be handed out and reviewed.

Ballare is a great community of dancers and families. Thank you for being a part of what goes on here.

Sincerely,

Ann

Ballare's "Excellent Adventure" Tickets on Sale Now!
Ballare's Excellent Adventure is a wonderful story about two siblings who think their parent's music is for fogeys. They head out to a street dance to air their gripes, only to be taken in by a mystical DJ who hijacks their iPod and takes them on a journey through time to teach them the real roots of music and dance.

Excellent Adventure tickets are now on sale on-line! Click the link below:

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis until March 1 or until they are sold out. After March 1, if there are tickets left you may purchase them at the show.

We are offering a youth ticket ($10 + taxfor 10 and under)! Tickets for 11 and up are $16 + tax. Please e-mail the studio at [email protected] for seat preference. You can still purchase tickets in person. E-mail orders are not accepted. You can call the studio between the hours of 4-7:30 pm M-Th and 9-1pm on Saturdays to purchase phone orders. Final Excellent Adventure Rehearsals
The Excellent Adventure will hit the stage March 5th, 2016 @ 2:00pm at Minnehaha Academy North Campus!

This show includes dancers in levels II and up, plus some outside artists. It is going to be great fun, a must see for all dancers and their families.
There is a lot that goes into this show besides the classroom dances. There is a whole story line, characters, additional dances and staging that needs to be rehearsed before we get on stage. That is why we set FULL CAST rehearsals to bring all of the students level II-V together to practice.

Full Cast Rehearsals: Level II-V dancers

Getting Ready for our Close Up... Picture Day!
Picture Day will be Sunday, May 15th, 2016

Calabay Productions will be taking Ballare Teatro's picture again! Our pictures encompass the best of both worlds; shots of each dancer dancing and a classroom posed photo.

Calabay Productions takes a different approach to dance studio photography. In addition to the posed photographs, we take photographs of the students actually dancing. Teachers and parents will love to see their child moving across the floor and enjoying the art of dance.

What to expect on The Big Day:

Photographs will be taken in two separate studios.

1.) Dancers start out in their recital costume. Creative and Pre-ballet dancers will get their picture taken in what they wear to class in both studios.

  • Once the entire class is ready, we will take individual portraits of each dancer.
  • Finally, after all the portraits are taken, students will take a group photo.

2.) After the recital costumes photographs, students will change into their dance clothes for action photographs.

  • Dancers visit the "action" studio to get their photograph taken as they move across the floor.
  • The schedule will allow about 10-15 minutes for the students to change and get ready for their action shots.

3.) After about 5-10 minutes, students can view their action shots, portraits and group shots on several kiosks. Discounts will be offered for ordering the day of the shoot.

Ballare Teatro Summer Schedule Coming Soon!

Sun Shine Ballare Teatro's great summer schedule coming very soon. We are revamping our website. We will send out an e-mail to let you know when registration is officially open.

Our summer schedule runs from June 20-August 18. We offer week long technique classes and camps, weekly technique classes in two sessions, and intensive workshops for our upper level dancers! This means there is something to fit into your busy summer schedule! Pick one week, pick a few! We are hoping this frees up the rest of your summer for sleep away camps, or whatever else you want to do!

And what about our fabulous camps?  Some of the fun includes: Amazing Animals; Disney Dance; Neverland!; The World of Eric Carle; and Star Wars (we kind of had to offer this camp - don't you agree?) . We can't wait to see you in the studio this summer!

Adults - we have you covered this year the WHOLE summer. That's right, we are offering our weekly adult classes the entire summer - even in August!

Levels II-V, don't forget sign up for your audition workshop! Sign ups are due by March 1!

Food First means making what you eat a priority. Making it simple, not more complicated than it needs to be! Food First means using food as your medicine. Farm before Pharma I say! Food First means listening to your own body and giving it what it needs to get back in balance.

If you are like me, you may have gathered a lot of recipe books over the years. Some are hardly ever used and look barely read, while others have worn out bindings, spills on the pages and possibly even a burned corner or two. My favorite cookbooks are the ones that make preparing and eating real, whole foods a simple and enjoyable part of my day. Back in the 1990's my mom gifted me a copy of the Reader's Digest Live Longer Cookbook that had a large "Meatless Main Dishes" section. At that time I was living on a cattle ranch in Idaho, dying to learn how to work more vegan and vegetarian dishes into my life. This cookbook was the beginning of that journey and is now the way I prefer to eat.

The recipe below was one that was enjoyed by all five kids as they were growing up. I hope you enjoy it as well!

Indian Lentils with Rice
2 T oil
2 medium-Size yellow onions, thinly sliced carrots
3 C chicken or veggie stock
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp curry powder
½ tsp ground cardamom
½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground red pepper (cayenne)
1/8 tsp sugar
1 C tomato juice
¾ C long-grain brown rice
¾ C dried brown lentils, sorted and rinsed
4 small carrots, peeled and sliced thinly
1 C plain yogurt (or non-dairy version)
1 T. minced fresh mint, cilantro, or parsley for garnish

*In a large heavy saucepan, heat the oil over moderately high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add the onions and stir to coat with the oil. Add ¼ cup of the stock, reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for 5 minutes or until the onions are soft. Uncover, raise the heat to moderate, and continue to cook, stirring constantly, 3 minutes more or until the onions are golden.

*Add the garlic, cumin, curry powder, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, red pepper, sugar, remaining 2 ¾ cups of stock, tomato juice, rice, lentils and carrots. Bring the liquid to a boil, then lower the heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes.

*Uncover and stir the mixture. If it seems dry, add ¼ to ½ cup of water until the liquid just covers it. Continue to cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until the lentils are tender. Top each portion with ¼ cup of yogurt and a sprinkling of fresh herbs if desired. Serves 4.
