Spelling bee proves challenging, but rewarding

It took 13 rounds to determine the winner, but Carrollton Middle School sixth grader Dylan Roulaine finally captured the title of champion in the Carrollton City Schools systemwide spelling bee Feb. 4 by correctly spelling "banquet." Another five rounds were needed to designate a runner up with CJHS eighth grader Shannon Foss earning that privilege. A total of 10 spellers from Carrollton Middle School and Carrollton Junior High were eligible to compete. From left are Mark Zimmer, fifth grade; Charlie Fuentes, eighth grade; Eden Long, fourth grade; Maddie Mount, seventh grade; Adam Oliveri, seventh grade; Rhet Walker, fourth grade; Shannon Foss, eighth grade; Brayden Fordham, fifth grade; and Dylan Roulaine, sixth grade. Take survey to help
school improvement

Carrollton City schools are participating in the Georgia Parent Survey program and need your help. The survey contains only 24 questions.

All survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for school climate analysis. Thank you in advance for participating in our school improvement efforts. Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.

BOE approves Albertus
as next superintendent

Dr. Mark Albertus, principal of Carrollton High School, will become the next Carrollton City Schools superintendent upon the retirement of Dr. Kent Edwards in June.

The Carrollton Board of Education named Dr. Albertus the sole finalist in January after reviewing both internal and external candidate submissions and formally approved his appointment at the Feb. 9 board meeting.

"Mark Albertus is the right person to lead Carrollton City Schools," said Dr. James C. Pope, board chairman. "He knows education, he knows our system and our community. Excellence starts at the top. We are excited for our students, our employees, our community and for the Albertus family."

Dr. Albertus has served as principal of CHS since the fall of 2008.

"I'm humbled by the opportunity," said Dr. Albertus. "Carrollton is a special place. I thank the board for its trust. My family and I love this community. I will continue to strive to be an example of servant leadership and keep our students at the forefront in everything we do."

KID'S CORNER
What is your favorite school project so far this year?

"loved working on my Hispanic Heritage Month project. I had to do a biography on Jennifer Lopez. I thought I already knew a lot about her but I found out a lot more about her while doing this project. I found out where she grew up and what her life was like when she was a kid. "

"I n Mrs. Akins' science class, I made a 3D animal cell. It was fun to present my project in class. I made my animal cell out of a foam ball and cut it into fourths. Each section represented the inside parts of an animal cell ."

John Miley

"In Coach Cole's social studies class, I had to design an Aztecs and Incas map. I had to explain what area they lived in and how they traveled from place to place. I loved presenting my project to our class."
