Introducing Dorothy Rogers Tilly
Georgia's Most Prominent White Woman Civil Rights Activist
by Dr. Kenneth H. Wheeler, Reinhardt Professor of History
Decades before the modern civil rights movement, Dorothy Rogers Tilly '99 was an anti-lynching activist, leading boycotts and mobilizing churchwomen in campaigns for racial equality and social reform. As a member of President Harry S. Truman's civil rights commission, she did important work. In our own time that still includes racial strife, it is heartening to know that Reinhardt has a history of contributing graduates who saw compelling issues and tackled the problems of society head-on.
Tilly was one of several Rogers family members at Reinhardt. Her father, Richard, led Reinhardt as president from 1896-1901. A Methodist minister, he and his wife, Fannie, moved to Waleska with their many children in tow. One elder daughter, Lois, joined the faculty to teach English language, literature and history. Other Rogers children enrolled as students.

Eagles Sign 55 on Signing Day
Reinhardt's football team added even more names to its roster Wednesday as the Eagles signed 55 student-athletes as part of National Signing Day 2016.
"Any time you bring in about 60 kids, you're really doing nice work," said RU head coach
Drew Cronic
. "Our coaches did an outstanding job. People are taking notice of us. We're being very warmly received in high schools, and people are really buying in to what we're doing up here."
Cronic feels this year's recruiting class will benefit the team in the upcoming year and in years going forward. "We met a lot of needs," he said. "You recruit not just to replace the kids you lost to graduation, but to replace the ones that will be seniors this fall. We had 15 seniors this year and we've got 24 this fall, so that's almost 40 players you have to replace. I think we've got a lot of good kids to replace them."
