Varicose veins may be more than a cosmetic issue and can result in serious problems. Attend a free vein screening hosted by CMH Wound & Hyperbaric Center on Thursday, May 26 from 3 - 6 p.m. Board Certified Surgeon Dr. Martin Tyson and Physician Assistant Bethany Palmer are experts in vein disorders and complications caused by varicose veins. The medical staff will provide participants with treatment options, which are covered by most insurance plans. Varicose vein screenings will be performed by a certified ultrasound technician.
Screenings take less than 15 minutes and are open to men and women. Pre-registration is required. Participants are examined individually in a private environment and should wear loose-fitting clothes or bring shorts to change into for the examination.
Varicose veins can cause significant pain, numbness and swelling. If left untreated, they can progress into a more serious form of venous disease called chronic venous insufficiency. Varicose veins are caused by venous reflux or venous insufficiency, a condition that develops when the valves that usually keep blood flowing out of your legs become damaged or diseased.
More than 25 million Americans suffer from severe varicose veins, which can cause pain, swelling, fatigue and disfigurement. Half of all seniors, including two thirds of women over 60, will experience the condition at some point. Heredity, pregnancy, obesity and careers requiring extended standing, like nursing and teaching, are the primary risk factors. Complications may include leg ulcers and dangerous blood clots.
