Here's the latest thoughts on 5-day postal delivery along with an OSHA "alert," as well as kudos to a couple of member companies showcased by Sabine Lenz.

USPS Shelves Five-Day Delivery
In a recent Dead Tree Edition blog, it was reported that Deputy Postmaster General Ron Stroman announced at a meeting of the Mailers Technical Advisory Council (MTAC) that five-day delivery was not going to be part of the USPS restructuring going forward.

"In response to the questions as what the USPS has compromised on in the legislative discussions with its stakeholders, Stroman said that 5-day delivery was one of the things the USPS dropped and that other things that used to be on its list are no longer there," said the bulletin, which is only available to members of the multi-industry Association for Postal Commerce (PostCom).

Five day delivery has been a political landmine in that many small and rural communities abhor the idea and put pressure on their Congressional representative.  Along with the expanded online delivery role that USPS is taking with weekend delivery, this comes as no surprise.

Noncompete/Confidentiality Agreements
A discussion on PIA's HR ListServ revolved around a breach of confidentiality on a project and how to handle it.  With more and more print providers expanding their services, confidentiality becomes a large issue.  Do you have a policy?  Is it in writing?  Is it enforceable?  More importantly did legal counsel review?  For more thoughts on this topic, as well as noncompete agreements, check out this article on Printing Industries of America's website (password required).

OSHA Inspections
The printing industry continues as an OSHA target due to suffering a greater percentage of amputations in comparison to other industries.  Per industry sources, several print providers were visited by OSHA this past week in the North Texas area.

Is your paperwork and training up to date?  Are your safety programs for preventing amputations - lockout/tagout - in place?  Now, could be a good time to review your programs. If you need assistance, contact PIA MidAmerica.  Our team of safety consultants can help.  Give us a call at (800) 788-2040.

OSHA Form 300A
It's the time of year for posting OSHA Form 300A.  Firms who are covered - which is everyone in the printing industry - must post the OSHA Form 300A (summary) from Feburary 1 - April 30.  Employers with ten or fewer employees at all times during the previous calendar year are exempt from routinely keeping OSHA injury and illness records.  A copy of the Form 300 and 300A can be downloaded here.

It's also important to remember that as of January of 2015, all work-related in-patient hospitalizations, all amputations and all losses of an eye must be reported to OSHA within 24 hours of the injury.  For more information about OSHA reporting, visit the OSHA site, or contact PIA MidAmerica.

Digital Workflow Survey
PIA MidAmerica is conducting a survey on the various digital workflow solutions found in the industry.  It takes less than three minutes to complete and information is shared with all participating companies.
