Help is sought from public
to help catch rapist

CrimeStoppers has asked the news media to emphasize that anyone with information that could help nab a rapist who struck on Feb. 2 should please call 528-CASH (2274).

The assailant's latest crime occurred this past Tuesday afternoon near James Road and Skylake, in Raleigh. It may be the fifth in a series of robberies and assaults by the same man since last September.

The man is described as  black, 25 to 30 years old, six feet tall and wearing a fade-style haircut. He is believed to have used a red or maroon Toyota Camry in the crimes.

Tipsters help remove
bad mark on city's image

The case put a smudge on our city's image.

Two visitors from Arkansas attended the Liberty Bowl game. After the Jan. 2 game the couple became disoriented while looking for their parked car. As they hunted they were assaulted and robbed by a group of several men.

One suspect, who had tattoos on his face and forehead, was particularly brutal. He struck the man with a stick, destroyed his phone so he couldn't call for help and stole his wallet.

Fortunately, the attack was captured by a video camera mounted on a nearby church. The images were release to the public, and soon anonymous callers phoned 528-CASH (2274) with information. One tipster provided the identity of the man with the tattoos.

Memphis Police subsequently arrested Johnathan Outlaw, a reputed gang member with an assault record, and charged him with felonies in the case.

The CrimeStoppers Awards committee made a $900 award for the tip that helped solved this crime.

It was one of 29 citizen tips received by CrimeStoppers in January that led to arrests in felony crimes in the city.

See Memphis this May
and support crime-fighting

Consider this a save-the-date notice: May 20, 2016.

That's the Friday evening when CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County gets the entire house at the Playhouse On The Square main-stage theatre for a performance of the hit show
Memphis, the Musical.

We're keeping the tickets at $50 - for dinner, drinks and the show. This has to be the best fundraising deal in town.

The musical - lyrics and music by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro - is based partly on Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, a white DJ who played black music in the 1950s for his radio listeners. The musical opened on Broadway in late 2009 and was four Tony Awards the following year, including Best Musical.

This will be CrimeStoppers' fifth annual Night At The Theatre event, the organization's primary fundraiser each year. CrimeStoppers sponsors the show, and gets all 347 seats for one night to sell to supporters. The evening begins with food, drinks and social time in the main facility at 266 South Cooper Street in Midtown, with curtain going up at 8 p.m. for the show.

Watch for details soon at www.crimestopmem.org.

If you can't attend, don't forget that it's possible to send a police officer and his or her guest to the event with a $100 donation.

Companies wishing to sponsor the event can do so by calling (901) 525-5122.

CopperStoppers was created by CrimeStoppers in collaboration with businesses to fight the theft of and illegal sales, purchases and transportation out of town of copper and other scrap metals.

Copper stripped from wiring, appliances, plumbing or electrical boxes may bring hundreds of dollars when sold, but often results in thousands of dollars in damages to homes, apartments, churches
and other facilities.

Special awards up to $1,000 are available for information leading to arrests.

Help stop the criminals - the "copperheads" - doing economic harm to our community.

Websites building
new awareness

CrimeStoppers and its various programs are explained - and the public is engaged - in various places on the internet.

The main website explains the organization's purpose, and keeps count on major cases in which police need help from citizens -  www.crimestopmem.org.

A companion site helps students keep their schools safer - www.trustpays.org.
Senior citizens who are afraid or otherwise need help can find information they can use at another site - www.seniorbsafe.org.

Spanish-speaking citizens can learn about CrimeStoppers on a fourth site - www.pagoconfidencial.org.

Additionally, because the
theft of copper and other metal and appliances has become a major problem in the metro area, CrimeStoppers is building a site for its new program called Copperstoppers.

DV by the numbers

More than half of all violent crime in our greater Memphis community is DV-related, when the wide definition of domestic violence is taken into effect, including family members, roommates, and ex-intimate partners.

The total domestic violence offenses through the first eight months of 2015: 11,451.

Survey

A survey, put together by the University of Memphis Criminology Office,
over time will help show how awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence is changing. It only takes a few minutes to do the survey and the results are completely anonymous.
