Tenth grade Chemistry students spent today discovering what chemicals to use in their sparkler project while also learning about Bunsen Burner safety and atomic spectra calculations.  This workshop will help teams determine how to change the colors of their sparklers for their current PBL.
Energy chemistry teacher, Ms. Lockhart presented at the sta te science teachers conference, CAST, last week in Fort W orth! Ms. Lockhart submitted a proposal to present over a year ago and was selected to present on project-based learning, specifically how it works in a chemistry classroom. Her presentation included components of PBL and the formulaic approach Energy teachers use, as well as highlighting the awesome work that teachers are doing here at Energy!  Great job Ms. Lockhart!
Student of the Week  written by: Amanda Rodriguez
This week's student of the week, Gabriel Seyoum, was nominated not only by all the teachers of his cohort but his Algebra teacher as well. Gabriel's cohort teachers wrote,  "The Energy Eagles Cohort is recommending Gabriel because he is always engaged in the learning process and always takes the time to assist others in his group. He is willing to ask questions and wants to learn more about everything."  Ms. Kristick also nominated Gabriel stating, "Gabriel is an exceptional student and classmate. His work is meticulous, and his professional demeanor makes him a welcomed addition to any group. Gabriel always has time to help his classmates, often working patiently through problems multiple times until they understand it. If you haven't introduced yourself, it's high time you did!"  When I sat down to speak to Gabriel about his nomination, I could immediately understand why his teachers had nominated him. " I am a very proactive student. When we are put in project groups I am a natural leader. I enjoy taking initiative, and getting things done efficiently. I chose to come to Energy because I was interested in the school, and was really happy I got in. The school sparked an interest in me, and I'm so glad to be here.  The best part of Energy are my teachers.  They are so understandable and communicate very well with me. It could be almost 9 o clock and they still answer any questions I had to the best of their abilities. I also like being able to communicate with them through the HUB, email, or Remind Me, and I get an answer back."  As you can tell, Gabriel is an extremely motivated student.  He wants to be a software engineer.  "It's kind of shocking to say, but I have my whole career and college life planned out. I want to drive to Stanford University and go to college there. I want to graduate from Stanford and be a software engineer. My ultimate goal that I believe is going to be attainable will be working for Google as a software engineer in Mountain View, California."  We can't wait to see what Gabrielle accomplishes during his time here at Energy and are excited to help position him for a successful future!

AP Biology PBL Driving Question: How can the rate of photosynthesis in green plants be maximized so that biomass energy crops can be sustainable and efficiently raised?

Project Context : Biomass is the oldest source of renewable energy and has the potential to provide a significant fraction of renewable energy that we need to reduce our emission of greenhouse gases. This is because beneficial biomass is part of the terrestrial carbon cycle - the balanced cycling of carbon between plants, the atmosphere, and the soil. In order to mitigate the environmental risks of using biomass energy, we need to implement policy to make sure that the energy crops do not compete with food crops for land and are grown efficiently and sustainably. There is much research to be done to determine how best to accomplish these aims.
We value your feedback!
