From Us to You...

THANK YOU!!!

As the year draws to a close, in this season of gratitude and reflection, we at MABTR want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone in our extended family.  Whether you're a volunteer, someone who has rescued one (or maybe more!) of our dogs, made a donation of your time or money, or simply just love Bostons and want to know what we're up to in our organization... we thank you so much for being a part of what we do.  Without your help and support, we would not have the success we've had, and certainly would not have been able to have rescued the 2,800+ furry four-legged lives that have crossed our paths these last several years.

As we prepare for a new year, we ask for your continued support of our mission, and please continue to spread the word --  Adopt, Don't Shop!!

All the best to you and yours this holiday season...
- the gang at MABTR
Why Pets Don't Make Good Gifts

Pets don't make good gifts. While the intention is always good, the outcome often isn't.

Each year, shelters across the nation receive thousands of post-holiday "gifts"...rabbits and chicks after Easter, dogs and cats after Christmas, swelling populations that are already too high. Retailers significantly add to the problem by advertising pets as presents. Who wouldn't be charmed by adorable animals in their Christmas wrap and holiday bows?

Before you buy a pet as a gift, please consider the following:

-- Pet ownership is fraught with responsibility. There are regular expenses such as food, medicine, veterinary and training expenses, and durable goods such as beds, collars, toys, etc. Once the recipient is gifted with an animal, do they have the financial means to take care of him...for the next 13 years?

-- Pets require a lot of time and attention.  Most domestic pets are bred to live with humans. Dogs especially do not fare well when left alone frequently, and may quickly act out with destructive or attention-seeking behaviors if they are deprived of human attention. Does the recipient have quality time every single day to spend with the pet? Is this how they want to spend their time?

-- Just because we're old doesn't mean we're lonely.  Shelters and rescues frequently see dogs that were "gifted" to the elderly or critically ill for companionship.  In many cases, the recipients didn't even want a pet and are unable or unwilling to care for it in the ways required to ensure the pet's mental and physical stability.  To keep the peace in the family, many try to keep the pet and it can come at the expense of the recipient and the animal.

-- Pets are not disposable. If you are considering an animal for the elderly or for someone who is critically ill, please consider the following responsibility- are you prepared to care for this pet when the recipient can no longer care for it? If the answer is, "No", please buy a different gift.

-- Every animal has its own personality and behavioral traits. If a pet is gifted to someone, the personality of the pet and new owner may clash, and in many cases, the relationship ends in failure because the two are not well suited. Another common problem is breed mismatches. Breeds should be carefully researched by the prospective owner first to ensure that its exercise requirements, temperament and behavioral traits are a match to the owner's lifestyle and energy level. A dog's physical attractiveness is not a measure of suitability.

-- Dogs should not be introduced into a new home during the holiday season. The first 2 weeks in a new home are critical for an animal and the period when they require the most time, attention and exposure to normal routines. Normalcy is rarely found in households between Christmas and New Years (let alone spare time!) If you're giving the gift of a pet, we strongly encourage you to give a photo for the holiday and bring the pet into the home after the holidays are over.

Better Gift Ideas

If you think someone would like or would benefit from bringing a pet into their lives, sit down with them and review the responsibilities of pet ownership. Help them research breeds which are suitable for their lifestyles.  And most importantly, emphasize the importance of adoption from a shelter or rescue organization.

Why MABTR exist

Lest we forget that the heart of "rescue" can sometimes rip your heart out when we witness how other humans can be so heartless.

This little lady was found by one of our volunteers literally in a ditch this week suffering from severe dehydration, severe ear infection, very bad teeth, covered in fleas and ticks, emaciated, with one eye already ruptured and the other on its way. She is at the vet now.

There are no words to describe our anger with the person who dumped her. But we are thankful she was found by someone willing to help.

We decided to proceed immediately with her surgery to remove both eyes and all of her rotten teeth in an effort to get her out of pain and to allow her to start healing.  She continues her critical recovery on fluids, pain medicine and antibiotics to even have a chance at getting her back to health.

The vet named her "Kiki" which means "lovely flower."  Thank you for your support as Kiki gets stronger.  We believe she still has lots of love to give a special family who believes she truly is a lovely flower plucked from the ditch, not trash to be thrown out.

Pray that she will know some kindness before she leaves this world. She deserves that much.

Adoptable Dog of the Month

My name is CookieI am 12 years old and weigh 18 pounds. I need a new home because my owner moved and couldn't take me along. I am being fostered in Colorado Springs, CO.

I am a very sweet and loving little girl. My foster mom tells me I am one of the best little girls she has ever had. I have one ear that doesn't stand up all the way and my foster mom says it looks so cute when I look at her.

I have a little grey hair in my face but don't let that fool you! I am very active for 12 years old and love to be with my foster mom. I like to follow her from room to room and see what she is doing. I love to cuddle up on the couch or chair anywhere soft and sleep. I know most of my commands and obey even when I would rather not.

Ask Jennifer

Q:  Do most Bostons smack their lips together when they are comfortable and about to fall asleep?  My dog does this and it is one of my favorite sounds.

AThis is not considered odd behavior. Many dogs, like children, find something that provides them comfort.  This is one of them. Another example is a dog sucking his blanket or plush toy or licking a paw.

Alumni Feature - Missy Kissy
"Thanks for completing our family and bringing Missy (aka Missy Kissy because she loves to give kisses) into our lives. She came to us and was a bit shy, but has really settled in nicely. She loves to chase the ball, play tug of war with the boys, and most of all lounge around with them (on the rare occurrance this happens with 4 and 5 year old boys!) She is everything a man's best friend should be and reminds me of our first BT rescue almost 8 years ago!

Her loving, gentle, and patient demeanor is just what this house needed. Thank you again - you guys picked the perfect match for us!

Most of all thank you to all the people that made that transport happen in a matter of 2 days notice over 3 states! Your team is amazing and will never know how much you've given our family. Thank you!"  --The Robinsons

 26 Bostons rescued

in November!

361 Bostons rescued so far in 2015!

2,823 Bostons rescued to date!

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

Thank you

Every year around Thanksgiving MABTR reaches out to our volunteers to help us create holiday trays of great goodies for our vets as a way of saying 'thank you' for all they do for us throughout the year.  We picked Thanksgiving week to do this as many of the vets get lots of food from others around the December holidays already.

A big THANK YOU to the volunteers that made trays and delivered them on our behalf.
