PI DAY
Pi Day is Monday, March 14th

CCA's 5th-8th graders will be celebrating Pi Day in a special way.  The celebration will begin at  1:15  and will last until about  2:30 .  Students will have the opportunity to participate in several competitions based on pi and enjoy a piece of pie.

The competitions the students can participate in are as follows:
-Recitation of Pi Digits
-Creation of a story about Pi with a Pi character they create
-Ode to Pi (a poem about pi or pie)
-Homemade pie baking competition
-Pie eating competition

We need as many volunteers as possible.  If you would like to sign up to help out on Pi Day, please click here.

We also need as many pies as possible so each student can enjoy eating pie throughout the celebration.  If you would like to donate a pie, you can earn one volunteer hour for making a pie and one volunteer hour for buying 2 pies.

Thanks for helping us celebrate Pi Day (3.14) on  March 14th!
FLY LIKE AN EAGLE

Welcome to the newest section of the Eagle. This section will focus on student behavior, character development and CCA's Eagle Character Traits. This first article is focused on sportsmanship.  It examines how we can help our students show sportsmanship when they are outside at recess, playing sports at CCA, and participating in PE at CCA.

What Is Sportsmanship?
Sportsmanship is defined as:
  • Playing fair
  • Following the rules of the game
  • Respecting the judgment of referees and officials
  • Treating opponents with respect
Some people define good sportsmanship as the "golden rule" of sports - in other words, treating the people you play with and against as you'd like to be treated yourself. You demonstrate good sportsmanship when you show respect for yourself, your teammates, and your opponents, for the coaches on both sides, and for the referees, judges, and other officials.

Sportsmanship isn't just reserved for the people on the field. Cheerleaders, fans, and parents also need to be aware of how they behave during competition. Sportsmanship is a style and an attitude, and it can have a positive influence on everyone around you.

"Sports do not build character. They reveal it." - Heywood Hale  Brown

This article and more can be found at the website kidshealth.org.

Parents, if you get a chance this week, please talk to your students about sportsmanship.  The playground staff and classroom teachers are going to be talking with students about this next week.  Let's  work together and help our students become the best sports that they can be.  Thank you.

NEW INTERACTIVE LIGHTBOX BOOKS
Introducing New Interactive Lightbox Books

As part of our ongoing effort to keep students excited about reading, The CCA Library recently added 120 interactive Lightbox books to its online collection. Students and teachers are raving about this new resource.

In the classrooms, the Lightbox books are being used by teachers on their SMART Boards to enhance instruction. Each student can then access the Lightbox books directly in class on the new tablets and Chromebooks.

The Lighbox books are ebooks that are enhanced with:
  • Embedded videos
  • Interactive maps
  • Active weblinks
  • Interactive activities
  • Subject matter quizzes
  • Linked slide shows
  • Audio capabilities to read to students
  • Live definitions of vocabulary
Students can access Lightbox books two different ways.

CCA Library Checkout
Students can check out a print version of the Lightbox book from the CCA Library. Each book comes with a web address and a code that is used to log on to the interactive eBook.

ST. BALDRICK'S
At CCA we have several students who are survivors of childhood cancer. They're remarkable young people who contribute positively to our school community. They are the lucky ones.

One in five children diagnosed with childhood cancer will not survive.  Two out of three children with cancer will suffer lasting negative side effects from their treatment. Did you know that kids' cancers are different from adult cancers? It's true. And childhood cancer research is extremely  underfunded .

A group of individuals at CCA have been so moved by the stories of these remarkable children that we wanted to do something to help. We have decided to send a CCA team this year to the St. Baldrick's event at Fado Irish Pub in Denver on March 11th. Join or support Mr. Cerny and Mr. Hargreaves as they shave their heads to support this event!

If you would like to be part of the team and shave your head, the CCA team will be meeting at Fado after school on March 11th. Students interested in participating will need their  parents' permission and will need to make their own tr avel ar rangements. We also will be collecting donations on the St. Baldrick's website for the CCA team.

Click here to join the team or make a donation. Every dollar makes a difference for the thousands of infants, children, teens, and young adults fighting childhood cancers. Thank you for your support and Go Team CCA!

UPDATE: Team CCA is Shaving to Cure Childhood Cancer.  The Big Shave is on Friday, March 11 and Team CCA has raised $450.00!  Great Job Team!  Mr. Cerny, Mr. Hargreaves, Mr. Andrew Loomis and a handful of students have all agreed to shave their heads and you have paid to see it happen.  It's not too late to join in the fun!  Go to stbaldricks.org/teams/TeamCCA to sponsor your favorite team member or to join the team!  The shaving will take place on Friday afternoon, March 11 at Fado in Downtown Denver.  Parent transportation and consent are required.
