WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT: 2016 Dallas County Democratic Primary is Second Largest Recorded

Fellow Democrats,

Congratulations and thank you to all who helped make our 2016 Democratic Primary Election a smooth, efficient and fair experience for the voters of Dallas County. You made democracy possible, even with the pressures of a big turnout that ended up being second only to 2008's high water mark.

We had twice the turnout that we had in Dallas County for the 2012 Democratic presidential primary election. Based on this extraordinary turnout, we believe that enthusiasm will be high in November to keep the county blue, compete for state and regional offices and, of course, contribute significantly to the votes that Texans cast for the Democratic presidential nominee.

Our Primary Election Day was particularly large, with 160,000 people voting in hundreds of precinct voting locations. I am very pleased that all of our Election Day poll locations were opened timely and were operated without incident. We did face challenges, but they were overcome. We did a good job predicting how many ballots would be cast, so we were prepared for the high turnout. We also did a good job training both the office support staff and the many election judges and clerks who worked our primary.

Throughout the election, DCDP staff, together with voter protection lawyers, stood by to be of service and to field questions from election judges and voters. Volunteers provided transportation to polls and helped answer all 5 telephone lines at the DCDP office. The phones rang all day. My first call came in at 5:30am, and the last call came at 10pm.

Our election judges and clerks greeted voters, maintained an orderly process, and gave away both "I Voted" and the very popular "I Voted Democratic" stickers to our primary voters. These stickers were once provided by the Election Department. However, when budgets were streamlined, the stickers were abandoned. This year, the DCDP Advisory Council, several Democratic clubs, and many generous individuals contributed to bring the stickers back to the Democratic polling places. They were a big hit!

Again - thanks to everyone for a successful primary election! I am very excited about turning our attention to the general election and helping Democrats compete and win.

You can help, too! Please consider the following ways you can get involved...

Yours Democratically,

Carol Donovan, DCDP Chair
