The Lazy Days of Summer

August is the month I head back east to visit family in Maine.  I spend a lot of time lounging about - on the beach, by the lake, at the dinner table - and having great conversations with my extended family, including my 20-something year old nieces and nephews.  We talk about all kinds of issues - climate change, local food, energy - and I am encouraged by what my young relatives have to say.  They know that they need to take responsibility to make change happen, and I am inspired!

Even through the lazy days of summer, YVSC is working hard to make change happen - helping divert waste at community events; arranging for fall ReTree planting events; preparing a workshop comparing green building certification programs; and planning the October Community Recycling Drop Off Day.  But it takes all of us.  I hope that as we move out of the lazy days of August, our upcoming fall programs will inspire you to take action as well.

Enjoy August in Steamboat for me!

Energy Star? LEED? Green Globes? Green Building Program? What works here and how?

Join us as local and regional architects, builders and energy efficiency experts discuss which specific platforms of energy efficient construction work well for residences and commercial buildings in the greater Routt County area. Each presenter will discuss briefly the whys, hows and lessons learned about their projects, followed by a group Q&A.

ReTree Fall Events

Get ready for some great ReTree events coming this fall - two additional planting events, an art show, and workshops.   We will be hosting another planting event in September at Stagecoach State Park (date TBD) to finish the installation of Waterboxxes and an October 4th planting at Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area.

We are also partnering with the Steamboat Springs Arts Council on an Art Show.  Inspired by ReTree, YVSC and SSAC are teaming up to celebrate the natural beauty of our surroundings and the art that is so often inspired by it.  ReTree encompasses many of our organizations' values:  community, collaboration, giving, repurposing, nature, natural beauty, and more.  The vision of YVSC and SSAC is to provide artists with a platform to express "ReTree." The national call for entries for the ReTree group exhibition is out, and requirements and information are provided on the SSAC's website http://steamboatarts.org/retree-steamboat. The two-month art show will be displayed at the Art Depot in October and November.

During the art show, YVSC and SSAC are also developing a workshop inspired by art and sustainability.  We would love your thoughts and ideas on a workshop that cultivates creativity and sustainable endeavors - making art from recycled materials? Retool and repair? We would love to hear your ideas!  Please send to Andy or Sarah by the end of August.

Stay tuned for more details on our fall ReTree planting, art show, workshops, volunteer thank you party and more!

YVSC receives grant for 25 recycle bins for community

YVSC is happy to announce the arrival of twenty-five 60-gallon beverage recycle bins.  In May, YVSC received a grant from the Dr Pepper SnappleGroup and Keep America Beautiful.  After a short delay, the new, blue bottle recycling bins have arrived and are ready for use in our community.
