MILTON'S NATHAN IKLITTE
WINS NATIONAL SERVICE AWARD
NATHANMilton Senior, Nathan Iklitte,  son of Vance & Cecelia Ikhittle, has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence from The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program that honors youth volunteers nationwide for outstanding volunteer service. The program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), grants Certificates of Excellence to the top 10 percent of all applicants in each state and the District of Columbia. Nathan prepared, cooked, and served breakfast foods to patients of the Ronald McDonald House. He learned organization skills and teamwork. He also worked at North Fulton Charities Center. There, he organized shelves, served canned food to customers, and helped unload trucks.

"Prudential is honored to celebrate the contributions of these remarkable young volunteers," said Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld. "By shining a spotlight on the difference they've made in their communities, we hope others are inspired to volunteer, too." "These students have not only improved their communities through their exemplary volunteer service, but also set a fine example for their peers," said JoAnn Bartoletti, executive director of NASSP. "Each of their stories is proof of the impact one young person can have when they decide to make a difference."

Milton Theatre Company is excited to announce our 2016 spring musical... YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN; a wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend, based on Mel Brooks' classic 1974 comedy masterpiece!
Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein inherits his family's estate in Transylvania. With the help of his hunchbacked sidekick, Igor, and leggy lab assistant, Inga - Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. "It's a...live!" he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather's. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds.
With such memorable tunes as "The Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' On The Ritz," the campy fun of Young Frankenstein is scientifically-proven, monstrously good entertainment! FROM THE SUMMIT
Dealing with Anxiety

Article by:  Daniel Walters, MA, LAPC, The Summit Counseling Centersummit
If your child is struggling with anxiety he is likely feeling panicked over projects, staying up late with homework, or lacking the motivation to even get out of bed to get to school. Of course, every parent knows that when a child misses school he only makes the problem even worse for himself; projects and homework and classwork will pile up in their absence! And eventually they begin to sink under all that work!

The thought of missing class to see a therapist seems counterproductive!
First of all, I understand the struggle. My wonderful Mom spent the majority of my high school years trying to make sure I was on time, turning in homework, and passing my classes. But by my senior year she was burned out and I had never learned how to do it on my own. So when she said "I quit!", I began to sink because I never learned how to swim!

In order to save your child time, Summit Counseling has confidential, mental health services available on site at Milton High School. That way, they only miss 1 hour of school instead of several in order to get the help they need.  For more information, call 678.893.5300.

Part of teaching your children how to deal with anxiety means teaching them how to prioritize. So, set the example that their health is the biggest priority above any AP class. Without a solid mental health foundation, grades and motivation will begin to crumble. When they've learned to balance they can begin to learn how to swim on their own through deeper waters.
Let's not pretend this whole thing is easy. The reality of life is that it tends to be more complicated and difficult than anyone ever admits to. Your job as a parent is not easy and neither is being a teen in high school!

6 Ways to Help Your Teen
Article by: Julia F. Harris, MS, NCC, LAPC, The Summit Counseling Center
As adults, parents have a lot of experience handling situations that might feel distressing to a teenager. Teenagers do not have as much life experience which can make it difficult for them to choose skills to best work through a problem. How can parents help their teenagers cope through difficult situations?
  1. Help the teenager to look at the problem from different perspectives. Help the teenager envision the problem from someone else's eyes. Remind the teenager to look at the problem subjectively and objectively. This will help the teenager see both sides of a problem.
  2. Encourage the teenager to express their feelings related to a problem. When teenagers express their opinion and emotions it helps them build confidence and trust in their own feelings. Expressing their feelings will also increase their own insight into the problem.
  3. Give the teenager feedback on how you handled a similar problem. Acknowledge how the teenager is feeling and share a similar experience. Make sure to choose a situation that led to a positive outcome or positive growth. Keep the focus of the teenager, only disclosing enough to share skills useful for their situation
  4. Be open-minded and nonjudgmental with the teenager. Let the teenager know that you understand and that you respect their feelings about the problem. Tell the teenager that difficult situations are common occurrences in life, and that you will be there to support them. This fosters trust and prevents the teenager from feeling alone with the problem.
  5. Be curious. Ask the teenager open ended questions and give objective viewpoints. Do your best not to offer direct advice to the teenager. Distressing experience can be hard for teenagers to work through, but they learn better when they make their own decisions and have room to make mistakes. This creates emotional growth and improves coping skills.
  6. Consider seeking counseling. If the teenager is struggling make an appointment with a therapist to get support for the teenager as her or she learns to navigate difficult problems.
Interested in scheduling an appointment? Call Summit Counseling Center at 678.893.5300 to schedule an appointment with one of the school-based therapists at Milton High School. Visit the Summit's website for more information.
