Poolside Mixer to Welcome Leadership Torrance Alumni and Chamber members

This week's column will focus on an extraordinary program and an invitation to all chamber members.

Leadership Torrance is a program focused on developing effective leaders from across the South Bay. Sponsored by the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Torrance provides opportunities for emerging leaders to take an active role towards building a stronger community. In existence for more than 40 years, Leadership Torrance offers not only a challenging and rewarding program, but also opportunities to network and connect with political leaders, businesses, and the community.

"Through Leadership Torrance I learned new and creative ways to benefit the community that I live in, and network with other like-minded professionals," states Leslie Cortez,Senior Administrative Analyst, NPDES, Community Development Department, City of Torrance. "Since graduating in 2009 and Co-Directing the 2010 class, I have remained actively involved with the Leadership Torrance program each year, I stay in contact with the alumni and encourage LT graduates to stay involved with the Chamber. I stay in touch on a regular basis with many of them and look forward to attending events and programs where I get to see my LT friends and Chamber colleagues."

"Leadership Torrance is a phenomenal program if you are looking to accelerate your connections in the South Bay," commented Philip de Souza, CEO, Aurora. "In a short period of time, LT provides you access to local business and government leaders; it is an immediate immersion into our history and genesis and exposure to the deep fabric of community and nonprofits that contribute generously to our vibrant South Bay ecosystem. For me personally, LT was a rapid ascension plan from Torrance resident to Chair of the Chamber. LT helped me immensely with learning the lay of the land and instrumental in allowing me to join some very energetic LT Alumni and create Discover Torrance."

In celebration of the many graduates of the Leadership Torrance program, the chamber is hosting a Poolside Mixer on Wednesday, July 22nd at the Doubletree by Hilton Torrance-South Bay. All Chamber members are welcome to attend as well. The mixer will begin at 5:00 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m. Reservations may be made at www.torrancechamber.com.

Discover New Business Opportunities with Business at Noon
Starting this July, the TACC's longstanding monthly Networking at Noon event will be rebranded and reformatted with a fresh focus on developing business partnerships and exploring assistance opportunities between members.
"Business at Noon provides Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce members with several opportunities," says Donna Duperron, President & CEO of the TACC, "including partnerships, client leads, speaking and writing possibilities, referrals, connections and resources."
The TACC believes that when businesses work together to help one another, the whole community - and the economy - benefits.
The first Business at Noon event will take place at the Torrance Chamber office on Tuesday, July 14th, and will be catered by Critic's Choice Catering. Don't miss this opportunity to propel your business forward and discover new possibilities. This is more than just networking. This is partnering for a better future.

Premier Investor of the Week

Continental Development Corporation has been a Premier Investor of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce for several years. While there are many reasons we continue to do so, we focus on the strong community involvement the TACC builds with education and the workforce and the collaboration with government officials.

We believe the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce truly has business in the forefront as evidenced in their mission statement: "supporting the interests of business before government". One way they achieve this is through the Governmental Affairs Policy (GAP) program, which provides a platform for businesses of all sizes an opportunity to express business-related concerns on issues of importance and to be educated on the City's policies and procedures. GAP advocates for the best interests of all.

Continental Development Corporation's greatest return on investment is the people and connections we establish and the positive relationships we build, which is tremendously important in communicating information to our tenants and maintaining our buildings and properties in the City of Torrance.

"As one of the biggest annual events in Torrance, the festival has been a consistent focal point for supporting local business and restaurants and festival attendees get to enjoy a great evening of food, wine, and live entertainment. The Gourmet Food & Wine Festival is a favorite summer event among local residents, be sure to check it out!"

TACC Provides Business Insights in CitiCable 3's News Story on Minimum Wage

The TACC was featured in a news story regarding the state Legislature's current attempt to raise California's minimum wage to $11 per hour this January 1 and to $13 per hour in 2017. TACC's Vice Chair of Government Relations, Rob Van Lingen, provided insights from the business community to CitiCable 3 in its report that featured Torrance residences' viewpoints towards the state push to raise the minimum wage yet again. The TACC's position on minimum wage is to allow the current increase to $10/hr on January 1, 2016 to take place, and be closely analyzed for real effects on poverty, prior to any sort of discussion of a second increase.

TACC Helps Move Legislation that will Reduce Costly Litigation for Torrance Employers

TACC is currently advocating to the State Senate to pass a CalChamber labeled "Job Creator" bill that aims to limit frivolous and costly litigation by making technical changes to the Labor Code Private Attorneys General Act of 2004. The bill, AB 1506 (Hernandez, Roger - D), passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee this week and will head to the Senate Appropriations Committee for further review. TACC supports the reform of frivolous laws, regulations, and taxes that subject businesses to abusive and wrongly intentioned lawsuits or fines. AB 1506 provides employers with a limited opportunity to cure technical violations on an itemized wage statement that does not create any injury to an employee, by allowing the employer a limited time period to fix the violation before any civil litigation is pursued.

GO-Biz has partnered with the TACC to host a free workshop for local businesses to learn how to competitively apply for the California Competes Tax Credit in preparation of the forthcoming round of tax credit allocations.
