Walmart Neighborhood Market Celebrates Two Year Anniversary
|
As I entered Walmart Neighborhood Market, I was quickly drawn to three things: beautiful fresh cut flowers in containers, several customers in the aisles, and neatly organized shelves. As I waited a few moments for Store Manager Steve Matthews, I found myself chuckling as I watched a couple thumping watermelons to find just the "right" one.
Steve has been the store manager of this location since it opened 25 months ago. He appreciates the way in which the store has been welcomed into the community. "Torrance is a city with a small town feel. From the day we began hiring staff in partnership with the Employment Development Department, Torrance has been a remarkable location for Walmart Neighborhood Market," he commented.

Call to Action on Bills Deemed Bad for Torrance Businesses
|
The California legislature is back in session this week after a month-long summer recess period. Over the next few weeks, state elected officials will make final determinations on a multitude of bills the Torrance Chamber has deemed bad for the Torrance business community. Notable bills under consideration include: a minimum wage increase to $13.25/hr and an annual increase according to inflation thereafter (SB 3), an arbitrary fifty percent reduction mandate for petroleum usage in vehicles that will substantially increase energy costs (SB 350), and an attack on arbitration agreements in employment contracts (AB 465). Notify state elected representatives on these issues via TACC's call to action.

Torrance Chamber partners with the City of Torrance and American Honda for Annual Coastal Cleanup
|
The City of Torrance, in coordination with American Honda and the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC), will participate in the Annual Costal Cleanup event at Torrance Beach for another consecutive year. Coastal Cleanup is the largest volunteer day on the planet, coordinated with the Ocean Conservancy, California Coastal Commission, L.A. Department of Beaches and Harbors, and Heal the Bay.
DATE: Saturday, September 19th, 2015 TIME: 9:00am - 12:00pm LOCATION: Miramar Park, Torrance beach
"We have a lot of activities planned this year and we expect that this will be the most highly attended Coastal Cleanup event ever," says Leslie Cortez, City of Torrance. Volunteers will be picking up trash at Torrance Beach and contribute to maintaining cleanliness of our beach. There also will be various activities for the kids, raffles, free giveaways, and students can earn community service credit. The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce recognizes this event as a "Chamber Day of Service," which is why the TACC's Ignite Torrance program will be meeting at the beach that day to help with the cleanup.

Economic Opportunities for Businesses in Metro's Active Transportation Plan
|
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) attended a public input session hosted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) to provide feedback on Metro's Active Transportation Strategic Plan, which seeks to increase walking, bicycling and transit use in LA County. The TACC provided feedback to Metro on how to maximize economic opportunities for local businesses by increasing active transportation access to key locations in the city of Torrance (e.g., Del Amo Fashion Center, Downtown Torrance, Torrance Beach, Local Breweries, and Restaurants). The TACC joined planners and stakeholders from various South Bay cities and organizations at the input session.
