This past week, I had the opportunity to attend the South Bay Project SEARCH graduation, as a guest of Terri Nishimura of Pediatric Therapy Network. Project SEARCH is a rigorous one-year work training program for young people with developmental disabilities founded in 1996 at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. South Bay interns train at the Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. "Investing in the communities we serve is core to the mission of Kaiser Permanente. We're proud to further that mission through our partnership with Best Buddies, LAUSD, and the Harbor Regional Center by serving as a Project SEARCH internship site," said Lesley Wille, RN and executive director of the South Bay Medical Center. "Time and again these interns exceed our expectations and prove that they are capable of so much more than our preconceived notions might lead us to believe. It is inspiring to work with them, and the positive impact that they have had on our organizational culture is invaluable." The graduating class consisted of seven individuals who proudly spoke from the podium regarding the various experiences they had at Kaiser. Graduates gained experience in delivery and stocking, office work, data entry, janitorial, materials management, customer service, patient care, warehouse and stocking. The hour long graduation included several presentations from the South Bay Project SEACH partners. A touching moment included the mother of a graduate speaking about the program and what remarkable experiences it created for her son. If your business is interested in joining a vibrant network of South Bay businesses who employ individuals with disabilities, please contact Cheo Leslie at (310) 257-6401. |
