OUT & ABOUT
with TACC President & CEO Donna Duperron
Donna visits Resident's Inn by Marriott
A Beautiful Remodel
I recently had the opportunity to visit the newly remodeled Residence Inn by Marriott, located at 3701 Torrance Blvd, Torrance. Welcomed by General Manager Frank Godoy, I quickly felt like I was vacationing on a tropical island. The furniture, color scheme and decor are refreshing. Of particular interest were the open spaces where individuals or families could gather to relax. Frank stated that the Residence Inn is pet friendly, each suite has a full kitchen, and that a business center, pool and fitness center are also available to guests. Additionally, full breakfast buffets are offered seven days a week. Frank has been a general manager at this location for eight years and has a staff of 60. When asked what has been the biggest change in his industry in the past eight years, he quickly stated, "Travel has become more sophisticated. There has been a radical change in 'how' travelers are booking their hotels due to technology." A Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce member since 1984, please consider referring Residence Inn by Marriott to your colleagues, friends or relatives. |

Last Wednesday at the CalChamber's Capitol Summit, the CalChamber named Rob Van Lingen, the TACC's Vice Chair of Government Relations and owner of Van Lingen Towing, as one of two recipients of the Small Business Advocate of the Year Award.
Small Business Advocate Award recipients are nominated by local chamber of commerce executives. The criteria used in the selection process include taking leadership roles in or working on federal, state or local ballot measures, testifying before the state Legislature and representing a local chamber of commerce before local government.

Special Edition of "Torrance Business Issues Update" as House of Origin Deadline Approaches
The TACC voiced the concerns of Torrance businesses in Sacramento this past week as the House of Origin Deadline draws near (June 5th). The deadline is a critical period in the Legislature as the fate of hundreds of bills will be decided this week. The TACC has identified legislation being considered in the State Legislature that will have significant impacts on Torrance businesses and the local economy. In order to communicate the viewpoints of the Torrance business community with our elected officials, the TACC has authored a robust white paper for this month's version of the "Torrance Business Issues Update." The report highlights the most noteworthy policies still being considered in the Legislature. Check it out here.

State of Education: A Look Back |
Last week's State of Education 2015 event started off with a heartwarming performance from Carr Elementary Kindergarten class (pictured above), as they sang and hand-motioned the National Anthem. The event continued with three 15 minute presentations from Dr. Ellen Junn, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs California State University Dominguez Hills, Dr. Thomas Fallo, President El Camino College and Dr. George Mannon, Superintendent Torrance Unified School District (pictured at top of Chamber Weekly). Each speaker discussed the many issues facing education, along with the many successful achievements of their campuses, students, and faculty. They each praised the Torrance community for its continued efforts and passion to help its students strive and succeed. The event concluded with scholarship presentations to six students from North, South and West High and CSUDH, who were honored and recognized for their achievements in excellence. Thank you to sponsors: California State University Dominguez Hills, Continental Development Corporation, Kaiser Permanente, Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings, and Doubletree by Hilton Torrance - South Bay. |
