NEW PARTNER HIGHLIGHT:  GOVANS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Since October, LET'S GO has formed a new partnership with Govans Elementary School
as a result of generous funding from the Maryland State Department of Education and their 21st Century Community Learning Center grant program. Baltimore Curriculum Project created and now manages the Govans After School program through this grant, and LET'S GO, as the designated STEM provider, implements a STEM curriculum four days a week.

CEO MESSAGE
Govans students explain how to build an atom model to CEO/FOUNDER, Dr. Corky Graham.

I am thrilled about our involvement in the Govans after-school program.  We have provided the curriculum, professional development for 8 teachers and administrators, materials, and most importantly on -site support.

The results to date have been amazing with the students having fun and are learning while they immerse themselves in science and robotics projects. We look forward to tracking these students as they matriculate through middle, high and post secondary school and into the workforce. Might there be a budding neuroscientist or a CEO of a tech startup in this group of students? We will see.

THE RESULTS

"Thank you Mrs. Dininno for all the hard work you have put into helping make our Govans Elementary After School program such a success.
I don't think people know just how much time goes into the three "P's"...Planning, Preparation and Practice. As the academic coordinator, I want you to know I truly appreciate how much help you have given me.
My teachers and students are ecstatic about the materials, and we mean it when we say, "let's go boys and girls."  We love every part of this program  and the smiles on both teachers and student's faces prove it.
I hope to continue promoting and facilitating this program for years to come.  I want you to know that your support is the wind beneath my wings."

THE GOVANS STORY

The 21st Century Community Learning Center at Govans, funded by MSDE and managed by Baltimore Curriculum Project, serves 90 low-income K-5 students four  days per week from 2:30pm - 6:30pm.  The program will improve student math and science achievement and adult literacy.  Students will participate in programs designed to reinforce the regular academic program including youth development, service learning, character education, violence prevention, civics education, art, music, recreation, and technology education.  The program will offer adult literacy instruction and monthly parent workshops.  By May 2018 BCP expects 80% of student participants to score proficient on state math and science exams and 80% of adult literacy students to obtain their GED.

LET'S GO was named as the STEM provider on the BCP's 3 year Grant in October 2015.  Within a month's time, LET'S GO had a 4 day per week STEM program up and running for all 90 students. LET'S GO's instructor training and programming includes robotics at all age levels, hands-on science and engineering curriculum with math integration, STEM games, and a blended-learning math program featuring IXL software and "unplugged" math activities, among others. The program is planned to run through the 2017/2018 school year.

STEM CELEBRATION
On Thursday, February 18 students came together after-school to celebrate the wonders of STEM. They presented to faculty, parents and their peers what they have been learning throughout the semester.  Not only did they reveal the hard skills that they have learned but they demonstrated soft skills such as presenting to a group that are so important for success.

Govans STEM students have been collaborating with their peers on a multitude of projects. Many have worked in teams to design and build cars, trucks and buildings. Other students studied the physics behind balloon rockets.  Some students enjoyed getting their hands gooey with the creation of slime!

These students were so proud to display their products and their knowledge.  The energy in the room was exploding.  It truly was a celebration!

Balloon Rockets

During the STEM celebration, students enjoyed racing their balloon rockets down the school hallway.  Students are learning about the thrust produced by the potential energy of the pressurized air in the ballon. They witness Newton's law of motion: 'For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'. Introducing young students to the wonders of science and engineering at a young age opens up the world of STEM career opportunities.
