A Farewell to Francesco's Restaurant

Tradition is taking another blow to the chin. Two blows, actually. Francesco's Restaurant in Oakland will close
Friday, March 31
after 48 years. The Oakland Tribune will cease being a daily newspaper
Monday, April 4
after 150 years.
That's nearly 200 years of tradition down for the count, and the timing couldn't be stranger. For Oakland is experiencing an economic boom unlike anything we've seen in modern times. Businesses are opening, right and left, and Oakland now is perceived nationally as a destination city. Even Oakland's restaurants are receiving better reviews than San Francisco's.
And the food still is great at Francesco's, a fixture at the corner of Hegenberger and Pardee, just north of the Oakland International Airport. And with three sports teams in Oakland, including the best basketball team on the planet, Oakland won't have the daily Tribune to cover them anymore.
Francesco's clearly had an attendant role in Oakland's sports scene, as representatives of the Raiders, A's and Warriors dined there for years. Al Davis had his own booth, No. 51. Billy Martin dined there with his mother, and two of his uniforms hang in a banquet room filled with sports memorabilia. In another banquet room, the A's Booster Club held its regular meetings, at which I occasionally was the master of ceremony. Tom Flores still loves Francesco's.
Davis and Martin are gone, and soon so will be Francesco's, the restaurant that Dewey Bargiacchi built into one of Oakland's most popular eating spots. Bargiacchi is gone, too, and his daughter, Theresa Erwin, the new owner, finally decided that it was time for the restaurant to say goodbye.
"I've been here since it opened in 1968," she said. "I'm third generation; my grandmother, Josephine Bargiacchi, owned the Villa de la Paix Restaurant in Oakland. My father had the Chandelier Restaurant before coming to Francesco's. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Sociology, but I got too comfortable with the restaurant, and decided I would get my fill here instead of with social work. It's been a wonderful relationship."

Employees of Francesco's got their fill as well, and didn't leave. Cucu Curiel has been there since '68, several others from 20 to 35 years. It's a great working environment as well as having great cuisine. So what changed to the point of shutting down operations for good?
"There was so much activity around this area in the '60s and '70s that we were spoiled by those times," said Theresa. "We had the A's, the Raiders, the Warriors, and the (hockey) Seals. The Coliseum was jumping, local hotels were filled, but as time went on, the emphasis of the city was spent on building up Jack London Square and lower and upper Broadway. And we see now a great revival (in downtown Oakland), but this area kind of got lost in the shuffle."
Francesco's still does a wonderful business, but it doesn't pack them in like the old days. The old generation of Oakland's sports heroes dine here when they are in town -- Flores and Jim Plunkett never miss stopping by -- but a new generation of sports heroes dine elsewhere. Plus there's a security issue; vandalism in the parking lot. Theresa was forced to hire a parking lot security man.
"It's time in a lot of ways; 48 years is a long time to be in business," she said. "And I don't have a fourth generation (of family) that would be interested (in continuing the tradition). Plus you live and die in the restaurant, and I'm getting toward the age of retirement. You don't want a call at 2 a.m. from someone who says, 'You better get down here, something's gone wrong.' "
Thus in another month you won't be able to call Francesco's for a reservation and you won't be able to call the Oakland Tribune to see why the morning paper wasn't delivered. Dial up the East Bay Times instead. Theresa is unsure who the next owner of the building will be, but that owner, for sure, won't be serving great Italian food. She believes the building will be razed.
The family relationship at Francesco's is so unusual that the owner, Theresa Erwin, and the head chef, Mike Erwin, once were man and wife. They had a daughter, now 28, and the parents continue to work together amiably.
Mike, a former boxer, is an avid weightlifter who pumped iron with Raiders' Matt Millen, Dave Pear, Todd Christensen and Art Shell. Mike also became friends with Marcus Allen, Kenny King - the three fished together - and Howie Long. Mike Davis had his wedding reception at Francesco's.
"The Raider coaches used to come in on Monday, which was film night (at their complex)," Mike said. "The offensive coaches sat at one table, the defensive coaches sat at another table, and they wouldn't talk to each other. I couldn't figure it out."
Mike is unsure where he'll work after Francesco's. "Got any ideas?" he said. Sandy Gross, owner of nearby AFCO Electronics and a Francesco's regular since 1968, isn't sure where he'll eat next.
"Maybe I'll go to Alameda," he said. "I used to come here two or three days a week. We also had a tie-in with the (Oakland) sports clubs, sponsoring them, giving them gifts. We still have A's season tickets behind home plate."

Francesco's and the Tribune once worked hand in hand. "What's Cooking at Francesco's", Dewey's column, ran weekly in the Saturday Tribune. There will be no more cooking, or cooks, after March.
But how to react when tradition dies and Francesco's and the Tribune are no more?
"It's sad," said Sandy Gross. "My business also is third generation and my kids will have no interest in it after I'm gone. It'll just die."
"It's like Sandy said, very sad," added Mike Erwin, "but nothing lasts forever."
"We do have to move on," said Theresa, "and remember the memories, the good times we've had, and all the customers we've met. We've been blessed to do it all these many years, but I'll miss it."
Restaurant equipment, she noted, will be auctioned off, while photographs on the wall will be donated or given away. The family will claim the chandeliers. Francesco's, then, will be everywhere.
I worked at the Oakland Tribune for 45 years, plus two years at the Contra Costa Times. The two merged into the Bay Area Newspaper Group, which now will become the East Bay Times.
But it's not the same tradition. Something significant is dying, divided by two. It's history, yes, but it's also home. And we won't be able to go home again, because it won't be there.
