HAPPY CHANUKAH

Rabbi's Message

THE NIGHT BEFORE

I saw "The Night Before" thinking it would turn out to be another drug laden, sexually proliferated film with an abundance of filthy words, innuendos and idiotic characters. And, I was right!

It stars the Jewish au jus of the season, Seth Rogen, who wears a sweater with a very large Jewish star emblazoned on the front. It's a Christmas themed movie, with Christmas themed parties and a plethora of Christmas ornaments, songs and tasteless humor. The film was directed by Jonathan Levine and written by Levine, Evan Goldberg, Ariel Shaffir stars Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan and Ilana Glazer. At least - if not all - of the writers are Jewish and four of the five lead actors I mentioned are.

Rogen's pregnant wife gives him a small gift box filled with all sorts of hallucinatory drugs on Christmas Eve because he has been such a thoughtful husband. (As an aside, my wife presented me with a book of suggested baby's names.)  She will be with her family on this Holy and festive night at church and Rogen, being Jewish and exempt from worship, will be free to celebrate with his two buddies.

To be fair, Rogen is an exceptionally funny and gifted actor and the evening gives him carte blanch to romp through the evening in a drug-enhanced stupor, which is a major part of the story. To his credit, he elicits many laughs because young movie patrons love to see films with plastered druggies.  Years ago when booze was the choice of total submission it was the late great Jack Norton who made us laugh at adults making fools of their selves. Liquor has given way to drugs. It's not funnier nor safer.......but, I editorialize.

The tasteless jokes became more descriptive and gross and the more descriptive and gross, the audience filled with younger people, laughed uproariously.

They were having great fun. I wasn't. Finally, through an unbelievable turn of events, Rogen finds himself in church sitting next to his wife and her family during Midnight Mass. As the Mass proceeds, Rogen's mind is tripping and he is feeling woozy. He gets up and starts walking up the aisle still wearing his sweater with the large Jewish star, regurgitates.  If that weren't enough, as he departs he yells out, "We didn't kill Jesus!"
I doubt if any of the Jewish names responsible for this depraved story are in close touch with their heritage. If they were, the subject matter would have been much more subtle and compassionate in handling the gross humor and certainly not demeaning as the church scene was. "It's the times," some wags might say. I disagree. It's the lack of our generation in not instilling the Judaic principles of benevolence and respect for others.

Writer/Director Jonathan Levine also gave us the emotionally wonderful and funny, "50/50," also starring Rogan and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Those were the days my friends when a Levine film was meaningful, character driven and noteworthy and I foolishly thought it would never end.

At least we still have our holidays.

HAPPY CHANUKAH EVERYONE!

Much Love, Rabbi Jerry

                           Trump - whoda thunk it?

Illegal immigration is also an ignorance problem.  Way too many of us are too parochial, so provincial that we assume all societies function and think just as we do.  But any objective observation will prove that wrong.  Some societies treat their women like livestock and their children even worse.  Some folks find crime a reasonable answer to their money problems and violence proof of spirituality.  They train their children to hate and murder, and some even marry their daughters off while in grade school.  Nothing we observe about these invading cultures demonstrate that they want to live like we do.  But the illusion continues - "they just want a better life for their children, or we owe it to them."  Really?  What do you know about what drives these folks over our border?  What do you know, not think, KNOW about their presence here will affect our economy?  Our health?  Safety?  Our schools?  Our elections?  Right.  Nothing.

When I hear people supporting Palestinian aggression I'm just astonished at the ignorance of history.  Did you know that even back in 70 A.D. when Rome sacked Jerusalem they did it with mercenary Arab soldiers - they knew the Arabs would be passionate about killing Jews, and they were.  Anti-Semitism dates back to Abraham and Ishmael, to Jacob and Esau (I learned this at Rabbi Jerry's "101" class).  Anything we try to do other than support Israel (always the safe side to be on - see Genesis 12) WILL ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE.

REVIEW FROM THE PEW
BY Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler

CREED

If you liked the Rocky movies, chances are you will enjoy "Creed."

Present are the blood spurting fight scenarios captured with precision by director, Ryan Coogler, the ever-present cliché dialogue, the love affair with boxing and women and the iconic codger himself, Rocky Balboa now older and just as driven.

This time, however, his quest for a title fight is not for him but for Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed played with the same intensity and power by Michael B. Jordan.

Adonis, whose famous father died before he was born, seeks out Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) because he needs a first rate trainer. Fighting is in his blood. Reluctant at first, Rocky likes the determination and spirit of the young Adonis helps him through a rigid and, at times,  frustrating boxing regiment.

There are a couple of women whose characters seem like window dressing. The gorgeous Tessa Thompson, a local singer who becomes involved with Adonis and Phylicia Rashad as Creed's former wife haven't much to do but carry it off satisfactorily.

There is nothing new in "Creed" that you haven't seen in previous "Rocky" productions. If you're a fan of The Italian Stallion as I am, it's good to see him at this time of his life managing, and not on the receiving end of devastating jabs and haymakers.

The ending assures us Rocky Revelers that there will be another chapter in Creed's ongoing saga. And, that's a good thing.
