A Crash Course in Como Park's History
The Streetcar Station and bridges are still standing, but streetcars themselves are long gone from Como Park.
What do a prison workhouse, Cozy Lake, the Saint Paul City Railway, a buffalo park, the Sons of Norway, hotel fires, dogsled races, a gravel pit, a poem as lovely as a tree, the Oliver Crosby Stonebridge mansion, and Hamm's beer have in common? They're all part of the history of Como Park. You can learn how this weekend as part of District 10's Sunday Series. Author Timothy Gadban tells you the stories long forgotten and the stories behind the park's most beloved landmarks. " The Como Park You Never Knew" takes place this Sunday, March 6, from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Como Park Pavilion. Co-sponsored by Como Dockside.
  • Next week's installment, on Sunday March 13, is "What the Birds Are Telling Us," which is co-sponsored by Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. You can find more details -- and the full Sunday Series schedule -- on our website.
How About Joining Our Board?
District 10 will have elections this April for eight seats on the Como Community Council. We'll need representatives from every sub-district, plus from the district at-large. You can get all the details of how to become a candidate, what kind of commitment you're making, and more on our website.

Make sure you're registered: All residents age 18 or older who live in District 10 can vote in our April elections. So can authorized representatives of businesses or nonprofits based in District 10. If you haven't voted before, you can register online.
Pick Up a New Recycling Bin This Sunday
The Como Park Streetcar Station is open this Sunday, March 6, from noon-4 p.m. A District 10 board member will be on hand to distribute recycling bins, organics composting bags, or just take your comments and suggestions. Or, you can read the exhibits or admire the newly waxed floor. The Streetcar Station is at the northeast corner of Lexington and Horton.
For You Crafty Folks Out There...
... and you know who you are: The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization is launching "Putting Down Roots" -- a community fiber arts project to celebrate plants that are good for clean water and habitat, or species that benefit from these plants. They're especially looking for representations that are three-dimensional and life-size. Details are here; there are even art circles scheduled for March 16 and 18 to get you inspired.

Full details and nomination forms are available online. All projects must be in Saint Paul, but they do not have to be locally designated or listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Or, Make Your Own Mark on History

That's why the historical society is partnering with the Neighborhood Leadership Program to hold an " Our History, Our Voices" brainstorming session. The free event, which includes a free meal, is Wednesday March 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wilder Foundation, 451 Lexington Parkway N. Registration is required; call 651-280-2457 or email the Neighborhood Leadership Program.
Not All Winters Will Be This Mild
To cut down on your energy bills in both winter and summer, take advantage of the discounted home energy audits available through St. Paul's Neighborhood Energy Connection and Xcel Energy. The audits analyze your utility bills; use diagnostic equipment to check your home for efficiency, safety and performance; test ambient carbon monoxide levels; and offer specific solutions to help you save energy, improve the comfort of your home, and keep cash in your pocket.

Standard audits are $60; infrared audits are $100. Both are subsidized by Xcel Energy at far below market price. To sign up or find our more, go online or call 1-800-895-4999. After the audit, Neighborhood Energy Connection's free Energy Advisor Service can help you figure out the best way forward, including lining up certified contractors and making sure you get all the rebates you're eligible for.

Crime Prevention Tip of the Week
Many thefts are crimes of opportunity: People leave valuable items in plain sight -- in public places, in cars, in garages -- where the thief can grab them with little risk of being seen or caught. Here are tips from St. Paul Police to cut down on that opportunity:
  • Don't leave phones, backpacks, purses, computers, or other valuables sitting on a table unattended in public.
  • Always lock your car doors. Always close garage doors and lock them.
  • Don't leave valuable objects in plain view. Cover windows in your garage. Place valuables in your car trunk -- and do it before you get to your destination, not after you park, when thieves may be watching what you're putting away.
  • Put extra locks on bicycles, power tools, and other valuables -- even if you already keep them in a locked garage or shed.
  • Record serial numbers, so that if your valuables are stolen, there's a better chance of getting them back.
At the Fairgrounds
The Saint Paul Woodworking Show takes place this weekend, March 4-6, in the Warner Coliseum. Hours are noon-6 p.m. today (Friday); 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; and
