NAMI-NYC Metro Collaborates on Family-to-Family
Study Published in Psychiatric Services in Advance

NAMI-NYC Metro's Wendy Brennan, Kinsey McManus and Nanaho Sawano collaborated with Dr. Lisa Dixon of the New York State Psychiatric Institute and faculty members at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University to publish the article Generalizability of the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program: Evidence From an Efficacy Study, in Psychiatric Services in Advance. The article details the findings of a study which followed up the work Dr. Dixon conducted to deem Family-to-Family an evidenced based practice.

The study concludes that "caregivers need supports that encourage shifts in what they try to control or influence and
what they view as decisions they must make and that help them remember the need to change their expectations and
to care for themselves...Family peer-led programs enhance participants' confidence to care for their family member while reducing the tension and frustration through better family communication and by a changing mindset that provides them with greater acceptance and hope regarding their role in supporting an adult with mental illness."

Furthermore the article states, "This study is important to the residents of New York City because NAMI-NYC Metro was able to provide evidence for Family-to-Family's effectiveness in the diverse community of New York City. The study also shows that the organization is willing to evaluate its own programs in a transparent manner."

Governor Cuomo Continues to Push for Paid Family Leave in New York State

Earlier this week many of you responded to our Action Alert calling on the NYS Senate to join Governor Cuomo and the Assembly in advancing Paid Family Leave in New York State. Governor Cuomo continues to push hard for Paid Family Leave, which could greatly benefit many NAMI-NYS families. Two weeks ago, we told you how the Governor held rallies around the state on Paid Family Leave. This week several newspapers around the state featured op-ed pieces from the Governor detailing the last week's of his father Governor Mario Cuomo's life and how  that experience made him an advocate for this cause.

Office of Mental Health Announces Upcoming Suicide Prevention Training Events

The New York State Office of Mental Health has announced upcoming suicide prevention training courses occurring throughout New York State. These free or low-cost training sessions are both scheduled and available by request in every county of the state. Various trainings are available for the general public in addition to targeted trainings for teachers, nurses, police officers and teens.

"In the last 3 years, the Office of Mental Health has provided suicide prevention education to over 33,000 New Yorkers, enabling them to identify at-risk individuals and provide referrals to expert resources," said New York State Office of Mental Health Commissioner Dr. Ann Marie T. Sullivan. "The more people that are trained to identify signs of suicidal thoughts, the stronger New York communities become at helping people who are thinking about ending their lives."

The trainings are made available through the Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY) which collaborates with, and is fully funded by, the Office of Mental Health. The Office of Mental Health provides $1.5 million annually to SPCNY for the promotion of suicide prevention education in New York State.

Dr. Lloyd Sederer Discusses How it is Time to Take Care of Caregivers

NYS OMH Medical Director Lloyd Sederer this week wrote in the Us News how last month's publication of the report "On Pins and Needles: Caregivers of Adults with Mental Illness " finally brings attention to the families who care for adults with serious mental illness. 8.4 million people in the US care for a loved one with mental illness. They deliver 32 hours of care a week, which puts a tremendous strain on them emotionally, physically and financially. This demonstrates why peer-led family programs such as NAMI's Family-to-Family and reforms such as Paid Family Leave are so important for caregivers.

Presidential Memorandum -- Limiting the Use of Restrictive Housing by the Federal Government

In July 2015 President Barack Obama directed the Attorney General to undertake a comprehensive review of the overuse of solitary confinement across American prisons. The final report has been transmitted to the president on January 25, 2016. The Department Of Justice Report and recommendations concerning the use of restrictive housing, has made clear "although occasions exist when correctional officials have no choice to segregate inmates from the general population, this action has the potential for serious, long-lasting harm. The DOJ report accordingly emphasizes the responsibility of the Government to ensure that this practice is limited, applied with constraints, and used only as a measure of last resort." President Obama has directed the implementation of the DOJ Report concerning the use of restrictive housing.

Comedian Neal Brennan Discusses His Depression and Use of TMS on the Daily Show

In this clip  from the Daily Show on Tuesday, March 1 st, Neal Brennan opens up about his depression, which inspired his new live show 3 Mics. When Brennan talked to host Trevor Noah about his show before he came on air Noah said, "You have depression too? Comedy is born from pain, many people who suffer deeply want to make people laugh and experience happiness.  Comics don't often talk about the dark side of comedy and the monkey on their back that is depression."

Brennan also spoke of trying many different things to treat his depression and said of everything he has tried, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation was what worked best for him, and it was covered under his insurance. TMS is noninvasive method used to stimulate small regions of the brain. A magnetic field generator  is placed near the head of the person receiving treatment.

Symptoms Outdo Diagnoses in Predicting
Bipolar Disorder in At-Risk Youth

According to a new NIMH study, three types of symptoms emerged as powerful predictors of whether a youth with one parent with bipolar disorder will go on to develop the disorder, according to a study of 391 at-risk youth. The findings offer a much more specific roadmap than previously available for assessing risk of bipolar disorder early in at-risk youth, and one that is based on symptoms, not traditional psychiatric diagnoses.
