A Note from the President
Dear NASSM Members:

I hope this finds you well as we "March" forward toward NASSM 2016!  I am excited for a great conference and for all the excellent conversations that will be a part of our time together in Orlando.

Chris Green (Past-President) has been working hard on the schedule that has just been released and registration will open very soon. As you look through the conference program, you will note a few changes that are part of feedback we received from the membership.  Most notably, we have created a 4-part teaching-learning fair, along with poster presentations.  Among other benefits, this allows us to utilize a less hectic setting for these presentations, which should allow for better conversation and sharing of ideas.

In addition to registering for the conference, please check the website for deadlines concerning NASSM Research Fellow, various grant opportunities (faculty, student, service) and nominations for NASSM Executive Positions.  Please consider nominating someone or yourself to serve in this great organization!

I look forward to seeing you all in Orlando.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!

Best,
Dr. Marlene Dixon
NASSM President

A Note from the Past-President
Hello members!

I have released the  preliminary conference schedule online.  Please check the schedule for any errors, omissions, or scheduling conflicts if you had more than one presentation accepted.  If you find an error, please contact  Dr. Chris Green  no later than midnight, March 18th. All authors have been notified of the schedule, and have been advised to identify any problems within these two weeks. After this time, the program will be finalized and changes will be not be possible.

Please check the schedule carefully, as there have been changes to the way scheduling of posters and the Teaching and Learning Fair.  As before, Teaching and Learning Fair and Poster Sessions will take place simultaneously.  However, there are FOUR of these sessions included on the program, and they are held concurrent with the 20-minute presentations.  Each session will include ~15 Teaching and Learning stations, and ~18 posters.

I have worked diligently to avoid scheduling conflicts for individual presenters, but with more than 800 authors, it is possible that I may have missed something. So... please email me when and if you find any problems.

Best,
Dr. Chris Green
NASSM Past-President

Program News
The Pathway to an MBA in Sports Management is the result of a partnership between UCR Extension and the UEM Real Madrid Graduate School; students start off taking coursework at UCR before going on to complete UEM's Sports Management MBA, an online MBA program which includes a trip to Madrid to attend an international conference for sports professionals called White Week. At White Week, students attend lectures delivered by experts in the international sports business, and get a chance to network with professionals at Real Madrid, FIFA, Nike, Adidas, and other international sports brands. The UEM MBA in Sports Management was also recently ranked one of the top sports MBA programs in the world. Students will learn from sports industry professionals at UCR and UEM, gain valuable work experience as part of their studies, and graduate with a top ranked MBA in Sports Management in as little as one year.

Jordan Field, the Director of the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Paul Bee, the Director of Ticket Sales for the Detroit Red Wings have both joined the Wayne State University Sports Administration program faculty this semester to lend their expertise in the professional sports industry to students in the online graduate program.

Seattle University's Master of Sport Administration and Leadership is proud to announce the successful launch of the first cohort of its new and exclusively online Sport  Sustainability Leadership certificate.  The graduate certificate is the first program of its kind in the world that meets the demands for professionals who can embed environmentally sustainable practices in sport organizations of all types and sizes.  The 15-credit, online certificate commenced this past January with 12 students who will complete the program in 9 months (August 2016).  Our certificate students are currently working with several sport organizations across North America to improve or establish environmental sustainability initiatives and reporting standards. Most notably, one of our certificate students is working with the Super Bowl 50 Planning Committee to compile, write, and present the event's Sustainability Report. SU is now accepting applications for the second cohort.  The next cohort will start in the 2016 Fall quarter in mid-September. Please encourage your students to apply to the online graduate certificate if they are interested in being a leader to more fully integrate environmental sustainability into the sport industry.

Earle Zeigler's latest book, Physical Activity: The American Dilemma, was published in December 2015.  Earle has made this freely available as an e-book on this website along with 21 other books as part of his output since deciding to leave retirement behind and "start up again" in the new century. Now he's searching for a new topic for 2016. However, he states that it is so difficult to escape writing about the "crying need" for a quality program in physical activity and health education (including intramural athletics for youth). And, at the same time, he decries the excesses of overly professionalized sport within the educational system. For more information or questions, please visit Earle's website!

NASSM has  updated the list of journals that currently serves the community of sport management scholarship, which includes h- index as well as current and 5-year impact factors.
Join the Conversation!
We wanted to find more ways to hear from the NASSM membership about all of the diverse sport management related topics you're covering in your classrooms and in your research. Instead of saving it all for the annual NASSM conference or for publication in JSM or SMEJ, we've got three new outlets that we would like to introduce as platforms to hear more from you, our clever membership.

#NASSMasks
We introduced, in our last newsletter, a Twitter initiative called #NASSMasks. Every Wednesday, around dinner-time (EST), we will post a question on Twitter and tag it with the #NASSMasks hashtag. The question might relate with a current sport-related event or a question about something you're doing in the classroom. You can then post your thoughts on the topic and read the responses from others by following the #NASSMasks hashtag. If you have a question you would like to see asked during a #NASSMasks, send them to @NASSM_SportMgt on Twitter.

NASSM BLOG
We're launching the NASSM Blog this spring with the first post from our very own P&P committee member, Andrea Geurin! Andrea not only introduces the blog, but also provides one example of what we'd like to post. Read it here!

We'd also like to highlight David Walsh's blog contribution this month in the area of Education. Read about what his students are doing for the Super Four Course!

SUBMIT A BLOG IDEA!!  T he P&P Committee invites proposals about teaching to research or perspectives on current events or trends within sport management. With the range of experts in our field and industry, we hope to use this blog to generate a dialogue between opposing views, and more generally use the breadth of expertise in the NASSM community to share beyond our annual conference.  We've got guest bloggers lined up for the next few of months, but we would also like  to put the call out to invite you to submit a topic  that you would like to write or read about! For more information, please visit the NASSM Blog site or send your ideas to  Andrea Geurin.

Listserv v. NASSM Membership
Did you know that many confuse the Sport Management Listserv with the NASSM membership email list?  If you are one of those confused souls, let us set the record straight. What you post to the listserv goes out to a much broader group of people who are not necessarily NASSM members, while emails that are NASSM branded go out to our membership.

If you have  official NASSM membership business that you would like to send out not only to the membership, but also the listserv,  LET US HELP! Please send your news to the P&P Committee and we'll package it all up under the NASSM brand and send it out to the membership, listserv, and even social media on your behalf! Please send details to P&P Chair,   Brianna Newland.

Get Involved!
PROFESSIONAL MEMBERS, a re you interested in NASSM leadership positions ? NASSM has positions open for President-Elect and Member-at-large (3 positions).  If you would like to run for one of these NASSM office positions, ask someone to nominate you or nominate yourself. Please fill out the NASSM Nomination Form and an abridged vita (no longer than two typed pages) and send them to Evan Frederick.

STUDENTS, do you want to get more involved with NASSM? Beginning this year, the NASSM Annual Conference will begin a new tradition where its student members are asked to be monitors during research presentation sessions. We are seeking your help! If you are interested, contact student representative, Matt Huml
