AutismPROGRAMS COLLABORATE ON AUTISM AWARENESS EVENT

In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, NET's Children and Youth Behavioral Health Services hosted a free autism awareness event on April 29th at NET Community Care's Broad and Lehigh office.

Over 30 families from the community came out to learn more about autism. Children played games while adults interacted with staff about community resources and children's developmental stages as well as received free materials. A great example of cross-agency collaboration to share resources and reach more families!

EasterEASTER BUNNY VISITS NET STEPS

The annual Easter Party for the children of adults in NET STEPS was held on April 4th from 9am - 12pm. There were 81 happy and smiling children that lined up early to meet and greet the Easter Bunny that Saturday. Each child had their picture taken with the Easter Bunny individually and then with their entire family. After the pictures each child was given an Easter basket that was filled with candy, coloring books, crayons, and toys.

I would like to give a BIG "Thank You" to John and Annette Carroll, the PAC and a small number of very dedicated volunteers that helped fill and wrap all 100 Easter baskets and decorate for the party. These special people continue to lead by example and show that small acts of kindness are worth more than the grandest of intentions. Because of their efforts the Easter party was a success.

CBHSCBHS HIGHLIGHTED FOR NEW TRAUMA ASSESSMENT TOOL

Harry Allen, director of Outpatient and Specialized Services at Children's Behavioral Health, was recently interviewed by ACEs Connection about a new assessment tool NET has implemented that helps staff better treat families who have experienced trauma.  The survey came out of the
CDC-Kaiser Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study.

Allen says "the 10-question ACE survey is the simplest tool for evaluating an outpatient's needs. Other tools for informing a therapist about a child's traumatic experiences are more complicated and require the therapist to first develop a rapport with the family." An ACEs assessment, however, can be used at the first visit with the child and parent because it's simple to complete and helps to establish an immediate connection between the therapist and the family. CBH therapists began using the ACEs screening in mid-April.

Plans are to assess outcomes of the ACEs integration into the treatment approach and eventually develop ACEs-based treatment protocols.

The full interview can be found on the ACEs Connection website:

Thank you, Harry and all of the CBH staff!

YouthFOSTER YOUTH MEET THE MAYOR

As part of the annual Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day, youth from NET Community Care foster care were invited by City Hall to meet the Mayor and other prominent individuals who work for the city of Philadelphia. They were given a brief tour of City Hall as well as the opportunity to meet and converse with Deputy Mayor Richard Negrin. The youth were also provided an overview of programs they qualify for by individuals from the Department of Parks and Recreations.

Special thanks to Ameera Sullivan and Jessica Mercurio for helping to coordinate this event and providing our foster youth with a great experience!
