Small Business Owners are a Critical Part of CAWA'S Membership

CAWA's commitment to jobbers and small business owners has not waivered. The Association was created by jobbers in 1955 to give them strength in numbers for business service purchasing power, collective training and a voice in the government affairs process.

Here ( view) are some recent efforts that the Association provides to promote and protect the interests of our jobber and small business members and what a number of them say regarding the Association. Contact [email protected] with comments or questions regarding CAWA's commitment.

Are You Aware of the Magnusson Moss Act and What it Means to You and Your Customers?

CAWA and the Auto Care Association are sponsoring a Magnusson Moss Act notification bill in California. At the point of sale, new car dealers will notify the consumer regarding their warranty and that, in and of itself, parts and service other than from the dealer will NOT void the warranty. For more information click here and/or call our California based legislative advocate, Gary Conover at 916.233.9655. Another member benefit.

AB 708, the Ingredient Labeling Bill, was Defeated on the California Assembly Floor Garnering Only 33 Votes

This bill would have required the manufacturer of specified consumer products (including automotive) manufactured after July 1, 2017, to disclose the 20 most prevalent ingredients contained in the product on the product label and all ingredients on the manufacturer's Web site. AB 708 was opposed by CAWA and it died on the assembly floor from a lack of votes!

Six Rules of High-Level Negotiating

The best negotiators are those who know what they want and what their limits are, but are also willing to listen, writes Irene McConnell. "You're not aiming to push through your ideas, or manipulate the other side into giving you what you want," she argues. "Rather, you're trying to work with one another to find a solution that satisfies both your needs."

Businesses Take Another Look at Your On-Call Scheduling Practices

On-call scheduling is coming under heavy fire around the country. Many hourly workers don't like it: They've stormed social media to criticize the last-minute cancellations of their work shifts and the lost income, resentment and chaos those changes cause. For more details, see the enclosed article ( here). Recall, too, as a CAWA member you can receive up to ½ hour FREE legal consultation. See www.cawa.org for the attorney in your state. Why Pay a Third Party - CAWA's Endorsed Insurance Agency has a New Benefits/HR Software Program Available to Members

Services include a HR library containing sample handbooks, best practices, and a live talk to an attorney feature, as a major example. Other services for those members who run their insurance program through CAWA are:
  • Allow employees to complete a single online enrollment for all of your benefit plans.
  • Manage qualifying events for employees needing to make mid-year changes.
  • Replace the old task of handing out enrollment forms with a single log-in guide that can be printed or emailed.
  • Print enrollment forms and produce Excel enrollment summaries.
  • Eliminate the hassle of chasing down incomplete forms and deciphering illegible handwriting.
  • Monitor enrollment progress and communicate with employees during the enrollment process.
  • Reconcile a bill or prepare a payroll deduction summary in minutes with on-demand reports.
  • Make common documents such as an employee handbook or holiday schedule available 24/7.
  • Give employees access to benefit summaries, including network provider directories or any special forms.
  • Employees are able to view their costs, which are dynamically displayed as they make their benefit choices.
  • Provide Total Compensation Statements that show employees their benefit compensation in addition to their pay.
  • Online HR database containing HR laws and template forms. It also includes the ability to talk to an HR attorney live.
You could save a significant amount of money by eliminating that third party provider! If you have any questions or want more information, please feel free to contact Mat Nabity at
(916) 286-0918 or [email protected]. Another member benefit.

There Were Approximately 100 Fewer Jobber Stores in the U.S. at Mid-year 2015 than 12 Months Earlier

The good news is the annual rate of Jobber store loss slowed significantly over the past five years. Although the Jobber store population across the country declined nearly 15% between 2000 and 2015, the annual rate of store decline slowed to less than a 0.4% yearly average since 2010, less than the annual store loss during the previous ten years, which was nearly triple this rate.

"Jobbers remain a major force in both the DIFM (Do-It-For-Me) and DIY (Do-It-Yourself) markets. Jobbers provide a unique combination of resources and services which, combined with innovative adaptations, will keep them strong competitors in the rapidly changing car and light truck aftermarket in the U.S."     Source: Jim Lang

Niche Job Boards: Because Bigger Isn't Always Better

Not only is the CAWA CAREER CENTER the best way to find qualified candidates, but it's also a great way to reinvest in our community and help build the auto care industry. Unlike the commercial job boards, our site is owned specifically by CAWA and was developed solely with industry employers in mind.

When you purchase a job posting package on the CAWA CAREER CENTER, the revenue that is generated will stay within our Association. This leads to enhanced professional development programs, government affairs representation, scholarships, legal services, education programs and initiatives that will help us provide you with a wider range of relevant, high-quality talent.

Your support helps our Association enhance the professional value of our talent pool. Visit the CAWA CAREER CENTER ( www.cawa.org) and connect with candidates that have the education and professional experience to make an impact from day one. Another member benefit.

Another Way You May be Leaving Money on the Table

Each year, as you sit down to review your books and see how this year matches up to the year before, add in a review of your merchant account. Take the December statements for 2015 and 2014, and do apples-to-apples comparison on your rates, miscellaneous fees, and total sales reported for the year. Why, you ask? See the enclosed article ( here) to answer your question and call our partners at Superior Financial Services for more information. Another member benefit.
