2016 Ignatian Spirit Award Tribute Dinner
2016 Ignatian Spirit Award Recipient
Gary Walsh '66
The 2016 Ignatian Spirit Award Tribute Dinner will be held on April 28, 2016 at the Sheraton Hotel. This year, Mr. Gary Walsh '66 will be honoured as the recipient of the Award.

Mr. Walsh is a Jesuit educated, award winning professional architect and a proud Alumnus of St. Bonaventure's College. He has had a distinguished record of volunteer service in the community with the NL Architects Association, Quidi Vidi Rennies River Foundation, Crow's Nest Officers' Club, St. John's Board of Trade and Swiler's Rugby Club. He was named the 2013 St. Bonaventure's College Volunteer of the Year for his extraordinary service to his alma mater with the facilities and alumni committees and the Ignatius Society. In 2014, he helped establish the "Fallen 51 Dinner," an annual event which honours deceased St. Bon's Alumni who died in World War I, with funds supporting the Bursary Program.

The funds from the Ignatian Spirit Award Tribute Dinner support our Bursary Program. At St. Bon's, 1 in 11 students comes from a family who cannot meet the cost of a St. Bon's education. These families are struggling financially due to situations such as prolonged unemployment, serious illness and other family issues. The Bursary Program is designed to ensure that no child is unable to attend the school because of inability to pay. It allows families of all income levels an opportunity to attend the school.

Tickets for this dinner are $250 with a $150 tax receipt. Tickets can be purchased in the President's Office or by contacting Krista Cardwell at kcardwell@stbons.ca or 726-0024 ext. 200.

If you are unable to attend the event, please consider making a  donation (a tax receipt will be issued for the full amount) or becoming a sponsor.

From February 24th-27th, Mrs. Annette Mallay and Mr. Milan Parab represented St. Bonaventure's College at the Jesuits of English Canada, Education of Youth Meetings in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  The committee meetings annually to bring together the Jesuit schools in Canada: St. Bon's, Loyola High School in Montreal, St. Paul's High School in Winnipeg and Mother Teresa Middle School in Regina.  This year we were joined by a representative from Canadian Jesuits International from Toronto.

This year the Committee welcomed the newly formed Gonzaga Middle School which is slated to open in Winnipeg in September 2016.  Through large and small groups seminars, the representatives discussed topics such as the Standards and Benchmarks for Jesuit schools, reviewed school reports and examined how schools could respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report.  They shared teaching and learning strategies and engaged in classroom observations. Faith and Spirituality were themes throughout the meetings ending with planning of next year's meeting slated for Regina.  All participants were grateful for the warm welcome and hospitality of St. Paul's High School in Winnipeg.

Mrs. Rowsell Completes Year Two
of Jesuit Leadership Training
Ms. Rowsell with the Nadal Cohort

The Seminars in Ignatian Leadership is a program designed to develop leaders in Jesuit schools.  The three-year program consists of two seminars per year, one in the fall and one in the winter.  This seamlessly organized program runs under the direction of Dr. Bill Hobbs from the Jesuit Schools Network based in Washington, D.C. The three years encompass Ignatian Leadership with Apostolic vision, through the responsible use of power, and with the dynamics of change.  Leadership theory and practices are explored while modeling Ignatian Pedagogy.  The participants are in a continual cycle of experience, reflection and action.

During the week of February 22 - 26,  the Nadal and Campion Cohorts reunited for Seminars in Ignatian Leadership to complete the second year of the program. Throughout the week, over 45 Jesuit educators from across North America, including our Dean, Ms. Jaline Rowsell, gathered to engage in discussions on topics such as Soul leadership, Companionship for Mission, and Ignatian Spirituality.  Ms. Rowsell will graduate from the Seminars in Ignatian Leadership in February 2017.  She will be the first of what is hoped to be a number of St. Bon's staff who complete this program.

Katie McDonald '18 Reflects on
Arrupe Leaders Summit
2016 Arrupe Leaders Summit Participants
This past February, I travelled to Maryland with five of my classmates and Mr Glynn to attend the Arrupe Leaders Summit in Adamstown, MD. During our three days there, we met students from 10 Jesuit schools from the U.S. and learned a lot about what it means to be a leader. During the group sessions, I realized leadership is more about listening and making everybody feel included and heard in the conversation than just one person being "in charge" on the group.

Being the only Canadian school there, it was interesting to hear what kinds of programs students in the U.S. Jesuits schools were involved it, and they were interest ed in hea ring our programs too. One school, for example, explained that they have a day that they all "Cardboard City," where the students sleep outside in cardboard boxes t o raise awareness for the homeless people in their community. Many of the other students were very interested in hearing about the gardening program that we have here at St. Bon's and thought it was a great idea to donate
Students from St. Bon's & Boston College High discussing social justice issues
fresh foods to a local food bank.

It was fun to interact with students from other Jesuit schools while we were there
and hear about what they do for social justice. We learned a lot about what it means to be a leader, not just in school, but in other social situa tions as well. The Arrupe Leaders Summit was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it to other students.
