Scholarly Notes from Dean Don Chu
Regardless of students' life circumstances, our School of Education takes tremendous pride in providing access to the best education we can offer, 21st century online learning and innovative approaches to education. While our mission remains constant, the means necessary to broaden our reach and to increase our impact has evolved into sharing our practices, within our SOE community and with the educational community at large. With the explosion of knowledge and access to information in the age of the Internet, scholarship and research have become central to our faculty's quest in American higher education. The QUEST newsletter demonstrates the SOE's recognition of the importance in research and the centrality of scholarship in everything we do. Thanks to all who have contributed to this issue and welcome to everyone who will read and share the scholarship in this edition of QUEST.

Mission and Vision of the SRC Committee
By Peter Serdyukov, Wayne Padover, and Ron Germaine
The SRC was convened as a standing committee of the School of Education by Interim Dean Fawson to promote a culture of scholarship and research within the school. The Committee's quest is to create an environment in which faculty can share their scholarship, and expand and enhance their research. Communicating about faculty scholarship and encouraging collaboration reflects four of the five elements of the School's Conceptual Framework, STARS. It provides evidence of the practice of Scholarship, Teamwork with colleagues and other professionals, Active Reflection on our practice, and Modeling Standards of exemplary practice.
We look forward to your continued contributions!
Next Call for Submissions, February 1, 2014

This book is designed to provide teacher educators and high school teachers with research-based, field - tested, instructional strategies that result in more effective teaching while at the same time providing teachers valuable lessons in reigniting passion in today's secondary classrooms.
Dr. Don Chu, Dean of the School of Education The Department Chair Primer: What Chairs Need to Know and Do to Make a DifferenceLink to the first Chapter on PDF The Department Chair Primer provides the practical information that chairs need to do their jobs well. Many of the book's ideas come from practicing chairs and are proven strategies for dealing with a variety of issues. Each chapter details a particular problem, includes a brief introduction to the topic, provides tips on how to deal with the situation, and concludes with targeted questions for further consideration. Its concise format is ideal for busy chairs which need a brief but informative resource. The second edition has been revised to reflect new pressures and challenges in higher education and the increasing importance of department chairs in responding to them.
