Hay Situation & Price Update - February
Each month John McGregor, MFGA Hay Expert, surveys MAFRD forage staff and some of the forage producers and industry personnel to get their impression of hay prices and the hay situation. Since the last update in January the continued mild temperatures throughout January and February has continued to lower the demand for hay.

Effective Frost-Seeding
The time of the year when frost-seeding is most effective will be here before long. This method can be used to renovate pastures, improve forage stands, or alter the species mix within a pasture by broadcast seeding when the soil is already frozen or subject to frosts. Frost-seeding offers several potential advantages when properly implemented, including: establishment of forage in undisturbed sod, reduced labor, energy and cash expense compared to conventional tillage methods, the ability to establish forages with minimal equipment investment, and little, if any, "non-grazing" period.

Wanted: forage growers willing to submit samples for the 2016 Green Gold Program
Don't miss your chance to show support of the Green Gold program! For 21 years, the Green Gold program has put forage quality up front for alfalfa producers during the spring growing season - a time when forage quality is especially difficult to assess. This increased awareness of forage quality is significant because the first cut typically produces more forage than any other cut. Knowing the forage quality decline of an area helps develop a trend for producers to judge how the current season is shaping up and when to start the first cut on their farms. The program now covers alfalfa development in the north and south areas of the Eastern, Central and Western areas of the province. For 2016, MFGA would like to invite forage growers to participate in the program and submit samples from their farms. Cellular RTK Correction Signal
With the introduction of PLM™ RTK+, New Holland is the first major original equipment manufacturer to offer a proprietary cellular RTK correction network. PLM RTK+ provides a cellular-delivered RTK correction signal, and is available to producers in the United States and Canada through a subscription at participating New Holland dealers. For producers who depend on precision farming technology, the new PLM RTK+ offers a number of benefits. The signal is available and consistent with sub-inch accuracy anywhere within the network. There are no line shifts between bases as with traditional single base or stand-alone stations. And, there are no line-of-sight limitations that occur with radio correction. Trees, valleys, hills, buildings and other obstructions are not a problem.

The Farm Labour Shortage: Growing the AgriWorkforce Summit
