Message From Principal Kuminka
Thank you parents for partnering with the school to make your children's experience positive. Ensuring homework is completed, reading, attending events, communicating with your child's teacher, and reinforcing high expectations for learning are just a few examples of how your support ROCKS! Teachers throughout Coebourn would like to thank you as well. Please read their comments below.
We have passed 100 days of school this month and we have read over 55 million words as a school. Coebourn Students are readers!!! Great job students and families with completing our second round of 4 schools 1 book initiative and completing "Mr. Popper's Penguins". If we read 85 million words or more, Principal Kuminka will be sliding down a slip and slide while million word readers throw whip cream pies at him. Let's go Coebourn and hit our building Goal!!
Jump Rope for Heart was a huge success again this year. The Coebourn School Community raised $3,999.95 for the American Heart Association. Over the past 5 years, the four Elementary Schools of Coebourn, Aston, Parkside, and Pennell raised over $120,000 for the American Heart Association. AMAZING!!
The PBIS and Character Education team organized a "Mix It Up Day". Students across grade levels were mixed up to conduct a lesson on diversity. Coebourn Teacher Mrs. Carroll said at the end of the day, "it brought tears to my eyes to see how cute the older and younger students were with each other". Coebourn students respect that idea of diversity and are clearly compassionate young boys and girls. We also ran Kindness Week during the week of February 16th. This will add to our continuous goal of a positive learning climate.
Captain Cook from "Mr. Popper's Penguins" pays Coebourn Elementary a visit!

Jump Rope for Heart
Students jumped all over heart disease this month by participating in a variety of several different heart pumping stations for Coebourn's 2016 Jumpathon. Stations included cruising through a heart maze on a scooter, individual jump rope tricks and skills, hula hooping, an extreme obstacle course, and setting a yearly Heart Healthy goal. Many students wore red to show their support in fighting heart disease and many teachers participated in the event as well. The event is a good representation of how students have been learning and exploring different ways to keep their hearts healthy through good nutrition and exercise. Leading up to the event, our school collected funds to donate to the American Heart Association. This year Coebourn Elementary raised over $3,999.95! Way to go Coebourn!
I am so proud of your hard work and dedication to such an awesome cause!

5th Grade Composting Club
by Mrs. Wooleyhan
When students hear the word recycle, they usually think of paper and plastic. Not many students realize that some food can be recycled too. That is how Coebourn's Compost Club started. The club began with the basics of composting such as what it is and why is it important. Many students were shocked to learn that simple banana peels and apple cores,
if not disposed of properly,
could release harmful gases into the air.
The students of the compost club collect material from 5th grade lunch on a daily basis. At the end of the week, the students add their green material to our compost bin. Students have collected about 1,840 cubic inches of material so far this year! That is almost 8 gallons of natural material that will be recycled!

CLASSROOM CONNECTION
Third Grade
is Thrilling
The third grade is currently preparing for our annual Living History Museum. The students have already chosen a historical figure to read about and research. They are collecting information by reading biographies and documenting it in a packet that is filled with questions and criteria necessary for their project. The information collected will be used to write a research paper during Writing Workshop time. The rough draft of the paper will be sent home to be proofread and typed. Once the final copy of the paper is complete the children will then take their research paper and turn it into a speech. The speech will be memorized and practiced for several weeks. On Friday, April 29th the children will dress as their historical figure and give their speech to everyone in attendance. If you are interested in learning about many different historical figures please join us at Coebourn on April 29th at 2pm for our Living History Museum.

New Electronic Community Bulletin Board
Beginning
Thursday, October 1, community flyers will go paperless for Penn-Delco.
In our continuing efforts to go paperless, improve efficiency, and extend our outreach to the Aston, Brookhaven, and Parkside communities, Penn-Delco has created an electronic Community Bulletin Board on the district website
located under the "Community" tab.
The bulletin board will replace the distribution of hard copy flyers in the schools and is intended for use by our community public and non-profit organizations to provide families with information about upcoming events and opportunities in the community. Penn-Delco School District will not post information from for-profit organizations on its website.
This webpage will be accessible to the public at large via links on each school's webpage as well as the district's main webpage.
Questions? Contact the Assistant Superintendent's office at 610-497-6300, extension 1314.

CALLING All
COEBOURN READERS
Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts! The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Every student who reaches this goal, will receive a special collectible charm from Principal Kuminka.
Students may choose an independent book and when finished,
take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the books read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book is not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will be recognized both at school and Brookhaven Borough Council! If we read 85 million words or more, Principal Kuminka will be sliding down a slip and slide while million word readers throw whip cream pies at him. Let's go Coebourn and hit our building Goal!!

Textbook Piloting in Penn Delco
In the October
Spotlight on Curriculum newsletter, parents and guardians were
introduced to the curriculum revision process in Penn-Delco School District. The process of revising curriculum includes: examining, piloting, adopting, and finally implementing new textbooks where necessary. Currently, a committee of teachers at all four elementary schools, as well teachers in Northley Middle School and Sun Valley High School are piloting textbooks for potential adoption.
At the elementary level, teachers are focusing on social studies, kindergarten through fifth grades. The committee is piloting two different programs, Pearson's My World and Teacher's Curriculum Institute's (TCI) Social Studies Alive!, as potential adoptions. At Northley Middle School, the focus is on mathematics. Teachers are piloting McGraw-Hill's Glencoe Math and Larson's Big Ideas Math. And at Sun Valley, social studies teachers are piloting several texts for different courses within the discipline. The process of selecting and implementing new instructional materials is multi-tiered. Initially, teachers preview several different texts from various textbook companies. From this preview, teachers select at least two texts to pilot. Once the texts are chosen, teachers receive professional development from a teacher trainer representing the respective textbook companies. Teachers then select a unit from the text to teach to their students. This pilot period typically lasts between two to four weeks per textbook.
An effective pilot helps to determine if the materials provide teachers with the needed resources to implement a standards-based instructional program. The core of the pilot process determines the relationship between the materials and the standards. The use of the pilot materials in classrooms provides teachers experience with a program's organization, assessment and range of instructional strategies. Ultimately, teachers will evaluate and select a textbook that best supports instruction in the classroom.
Final adoption of textbooks will take place this school year. The implementation of the teacher-selected texts will be for the 2016-2017 school year. The process of curriculum revision and textbook adoption will continue with other disciplines next year. The goal of the review and development process is to ensure that PDSD students have access to a curriculum that enables them to achieve, succeed and excel.

A Note From The Nurse
What Is Asthma?
Asthma is a disease that affects your lungs. It is one of the most common long-term diseases of children. Asthma causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing at night or early in the morning. If you have asthma, you have it all the time, but you will have asthma attacks only when something bothers your lungs.
An asthma attack may include coughing, chest tightness, wheezing, and trouble breathing. Less air gets in and out of your lungs, and mucous that your body makes clogs up the airways even more.
How Is Asthma Treated?
Control your asthma and avoid an attack by taking your medicine exactly as your doctor tells you and by staying away from things that can trigger an attack.
Everyone with asthma does not take the same medicine.
Some medicines can be breathed in(http://www.cdc.gov/asthma/inhaler_video/default.htm), and some can be taken as a pill. Asthma medicines come in two types-quick-relief and long-term control. Quick-relief medicines control the symptoms of an asthma attack. If you need to use your quick-relief medicines more and more, visit your doctor to see if you need a different medicine. Long-term control medicines help you have fewer and milder attacks, but they don't help you while you are having an asthma attack.
Please send in your child's asthma medications with a prescription from your doctor to the school nurse. We will work together to care for your child.
